Posted: Tue, 22nd May 2007 11:00 Post subject: So these new CPU's from intel! |
|
 |
I'm not clued up on the intel stuff as I've used AMD for years.
Well I'm now looking at building a new PC.
So the question is. Which ones are good.
It's now a choice between Intel Core 2 Duo E6700 "LGA775 Conroe" 2.67GHz (1066FSB)
or the:
Intel Core 2 Quad Pro Q6600 "LGA775 Kentsfield" 2.40GHz
Now I know the quad is a quad. But will it really make much difference in gaming?
Also how do I know which mobo goes with these cpu's? Like I said I'm not clued up on Intel gear.
I'm also looking to move away from ATI seeing as their new card is pretty much useless againt nVidia's 8800. So which is a good 8800?
Asus GeForce 8800 Ultra HTDP 768MB GDDR3 HDTV/Dual DVI.
Pricey but it looks soo nice.
Last but not least. Seeing as I'm modernising. I think I better leave my good friend behind. That good friend being my faithful 19" IIYAMA monitor. I'm looking at something big.
I noticed Phluxed mentioned a 37" monitor. Maybe too big (and expensive) but I am looking at Dell Ultrasharp 3007WFP-HC 30 or Samsung SM-305T 30" Widescreen LCD Monitor bearing in mind the Sammy has a lower response time.
So what say you?

Well it's been ages since I upgraded. My AMD 4000 1gb pc is looking old now. I think I need a better card than the X850 XT PE.

It's for gaming and I think I'm right in saying that fear is the only game that's used for it right?

Intel is also lowering their price. Might go for an intel after all (about Crysis time)

Quake 4 and Supreme Commander also profit from quadcore. Not much else though.

Quad isn't really worth it right now, maybe in the future though.

Don't get the 8800 Ultra, when you could add a bit more to that price and get 2 8800 GTX's. I love mine. SLI ftw !!!

It is often noted if a certain mobo goes with core 2 duo/quad. Most new socket 775 mobos supports it.

Jenni,
30" is a nice size, but it doesn't feel like a bigscreen monitor. Having this thing on my wall with my computer showing its background really makes it a nice centerpeice to a room as well. I recommend going big or going home. Monitor is seriously half the experience these days.

In july those two cpus you listed will be 40% cheaper. So, you could wait just a bit more. I would go with quad since it will be used by some games in the near future and ~12% less in GHz isn't something to make you go for the faster part.
Get the new P35 boards that support upcoming 45nm intel processors. These new beasts feature SSE4 instruction set that makes encoding about twice as fast. There is a gigabyte one that supports DDR2 as well as DDR3.
I have a 8800GTS for a 20.1 wide screen. I would recommend a GTX for that screen you listed but not worth the ultra.

heh,and the new 975XBX2 MoBo only supports 1066Mhz FSB,but doesn't supports 1333Mhz XDDDDD...not even my MoBo (975XBX) T___T.
Guess they'll release new MoBo's for 1333Mhz FSB?..we'll change our Mobo just for a 1333Mhz FSB?..ow come on!
Anyways,TOO BAD they're releasing new E4/6### 1333Mhz models instead of makin' other models cheaper, like the actual's E6400...or something..
Good news thou is the Q2D (Quad 2 Duo whatever) is gettin' a price drop (the 2,4Ghz 8Mb thingy)...i might get that when i get the money..guess i'll get it before July 22..and it affects in Spain also ;D..
in other words, nice try of the Price Drop, but we can't do a shit with the new 1333Mhz models with our current MoBo's..Intel,we kno' you rock, but help around here, will ya?...
Now i shall wait instead of gettin' the C2D E6400 now...Thanks for the info man ;D

Hmmm nice. I wonder what the purple sata sockets are for.
Isn't iron oxide rust?
Ferrite core chokes comprised of a compound of iron oxide and other metal elements whose properties hold energy much longer than common iron core at high frequency.

I think that actually few games take advantage fully of a dual/quad core system, the only one that i have that comes in my mind is Supreme Commander, where my PC1 E6600 based surpasses in a marked manner my PC2 P4 3,4 Ghz ...
There are some cases however where the difference gets nullified ... yesterday i rarred two very similar archives of files (two sets of saves of Titan Quest from both machines, with roughly the same number of files and size) and PC2 beated PC1 ... with a slight advantage but nonetheless leaving me surprised ...
So, i think that the performance of a 2/4 cores system will always be based on how the application uses them ...
Hope it helps.
There are only 10 kinds of people : those that understand binaries and those that don't.
