Ok, asking for a friend here.
He has a laptop with VISTA and a Desktop with W98.
He basically wants to transfer data from the W98 machine to the VISTA Laptop using cable.
Now, I never did stuff like this so if someone could explain the steps needed to set this up, I would be very grateful. Thanks!

Would it help if he can run this between VISTA (the Laptop) and a XP puter? again with the LAN cable ?

If he doesn't have any hub/router/switch he will need an ethernet crossover cable, otherwise simply link both PCs to it with "RJ45" (sic, 8P8C connectors) cables and transfer files via its local network.
If he want to do that via an USB key he will -maybe- need to install USB drivers over win 98.

Yeah I usually use a Crossover cable and when that's an inconvenience set-up both PC's for file sharing and just transfer via network.
