|

With all the new games coming out with their own engines in the recent past / near future, I am curious which engine do you think is the sweetest-looking.
Also, it would be awesome if a single scene (~15 seconds, high-res DiVX) were rendered with the different engines, and then which would look best.
Modders, start your... er.. engines.

Each engine has it's advantages and disadvantages. My personal winner would be Source, because it looks great on high end hardware while at the same time running good even on older hardware.

I don't have the best graphics card, but I'd have to say the Farcry engine, looks great and is well optimized ...

I said Source. Looks great and runs smooth. STALKER and FEAR can't count. They're not even out yet. They might look great but they might run like shit.

STALKER most of us have had the chance to test... sort of. Sure, it was missing a lot of the features of the final (most of the shaders and dynamic lighting, among other things,) but I was impressed with it: it looked like UT2k4 and ran like HL1. I've faith that this will be a good engine. Then again, Source sold itself pretty well with shaders/performance/facial expressions. If only there was a version of Valve without Gabe Fatwell...

I disagree. It is quite poorly optimized. It has the rendering capabilities of Doom II compared to HL2's and FEAR's engine, but it kicks the framerate where it counts.
Then again, I'm still waiting for ATI to give me an 800XT PE, and for a FEAR leak. Given the amount of cards ATI has given out and the amount of Monolith games leaked, I'd say I have equal chances on both of them.

Source although FEAR or STALKER may be better. From what I saw of STALKER from that leaked alpha it seemed nice.

Source, as it runs damn good together with physics, AI and so on. On the second place I would place the Crytek engine as it damn nice lookin!

So do you think that an 8500 LE could run HL2 alright?

I'm not sure about a 8500 LE.
My specs:
P4 2.4
512 PC3200 DDR
80GB HDD
WinXP Pro
Rad 9600 Pro 128
With above, I had to run FC at a pathetic 800x600, with medium details. HL2 runs with about the same, but do you want to comare the look of HL2 with that of FarCry? I think not. Hell, that and UT2k4 were thrown in for comic amusement, FC would have been excluded if not for the water effects and the 1.3 patch.
As for the Serious Sam Second Encounter question:
If you're serious, LMAO. SS2 runs a heavily modified Quake 3 engine, which wasn't even modified for graphics, only performance with large maps and inhuman amounts of enemies on-screen.

First Serious sam 2 is NOT Serious Sam the second encounter.
Second: The Serious Engine is NOT a heavily modified version of Quake 3 engine. Serious Sam : First Encounter and Serious Sam: The second encounter both ue The Serious Engine.
If you ever actually made a map with quake 3 engine or serious same engine you would understand that these engines are completely different. They handle brushes different and Serious engine is much more complex.
Serious Sam 2 will use the Serious 2 Engine developped by Croteam.

Fear and HL2 both use Havok.

Havok isnt an engine. Its Physcis. Doesnt render grpahics and so on.

Engine all the same, but ya, you are right. Not a grafix engine.

Source, it has the most advanced physics in the world, the best facial mapping and facial animations, as stated before, runs great on high end systems runs good on low end systems. And last but not least, perfect engine for large out door maps, Source is brilliant.

Honorable mention to Painkiller. Ran very well, looked quite good.
I'd say Source wins it right now, But I'm convinced that CryTek's deserve more credit. Being that they released it first. If only they hadn't made every human look like a freaking plastic GI-Joe !
That's what I find best in Half-Life 2... the characters are life-like
imo, atleast

There's no point in comparing engine not released yet. That's why Unreal3 isn't here. And neither should Stalker and FEAR.
However, I'll go for the cry engine.
Doom 3 ... yeah, doom 3. Maybe in 6 years or so then.
Half life 2 : Mind you, it's the design and the maps that rocks in HL2. The source engine isn't that great at all. Poor lightning system to begin with. Then outdoor map ? The grass sucks big time ! That's empty, there's no trees, no vegetation, your range of view is always conveniently limited by the layout ...
So there's the facial animations that are good. The textures. And not the physic engine, since it's havoc, and not source.
Far cry : The first (and only one so far) able to render a jungle, and still offer large map and good viewing distange. Water are as good as HL 2. Lightnings are better than HL2. Interior are not as detailled, but still pretty good ...
I vote for him.
An hole is an hole. Dick have no eyes.

If you want badass graphics at a decent speed it's the cryengine without a doubt. If you want a super smooth running game that doesn't look too bad but not that good either and runs very good on quite slow systems it's source.
I would say the cryengine is the best overall. Great great visuals at a good enough speed. They also have their own physics engine and I am sure that if the developers want to have kickass physics in their game the cryengine can deliver that. Physics wasn't cryteks biggest thing when they made farcry but like i said, I'm possitive that the physics engine have the power if you want it.
