I searched and I searched more and nobody seems to have my problem. I downloaded the OpenGL raster, configured it, the game works, but there seems to be a problem with the camera. It's not as it should be. I don't know how to explain it, but it's like the camera lags. If I use D3D I get the well known black text and other issues. So anyone has any idea what I'm talking about?

Have you tried turning down the dpi on your mouse?

Yeah, tried that. It seems to be more like an OpenGL problem, not a mouse one. The camera works well on D3D, but as I said, that's unplayable because those well known problems like black text, crashes. From what I saw sometimes even on D3D there is a very little camera lag (or I think that is), but it's much more smoother. Also, on OpenGL when you look at some areas the camera turns pretty well, but just for a second or so, then you look at something else and it's bad again.

Maybe it's a timing problem, have you forced the game in single-core mode ?
(I use imagecfg.exe for that)

Hm, can you tweak mouse/camera/opengl settings via ini?

I don't get how that imagecfg.exe works. Compatibility modes don't work, XP - there's no difference, 98 - the game doesn't even start, NT - the game keeps minimizing itself. You can configure opengl of course, you can configure it from the setup in the game's launcher, then it saves the options in rOpenGL.ini which looks like this:

i just tried it after looking at this thread.
using windows 7
and installed the raster ddl
the cameralag was allways there (i bought it when it got released) i remember it's just a buggy camera ingame i think. Mouselook and left and right button is causing this lag, maybe if u disable the mouselook somehow it won't lag (dunno how yet, cuz i can live with the camera stutter for now).
anyways i tried it and works ok with the ropengl video setting and RAd gametools audio option.
it's nice playing this game again after all these years on a higher resolution

Yes, there always was that little bit of camera lag, as I said earlier, it's there on D3D too, but it's much more smoother and it's not that noticeable. The thing is, on opengl, I get camera lag sometimes that I can barely turn the camera, that's far from playable.

Download this and extract the 2 files somewhere. Then whichever executable you drag'n'drop on the batch file it will mark it as single-core-only. (1 byte change in the executable header iirc) Keep a backup of the original exe.

Don't know if it'll help you with this game, but it's generally useful when playing old games, to lock them in 1 core.

Try using "DirectSound3D Software Emulation" for sound.
That made the camera better for me.

So I heard too, that the camera lag is because of the audio, but I didn't really see a difference. VGAdeadcafe, I tried that but it didn't work, thanks anyway.

Finished the game 5 times, 2 with the knight, 1 with the barbarian, 1 with the amazon, 1 with the dwarf. Simply the best melee combat game ever, even surpasses dark messiah.
Never had camera lag, allways worked flawlessly. Never tryed it on W7 though.

Yeah, definitely the best game for melee combat. Excellent physics, interesting and numerous combos and a decent amount of weapons which all have a good and individual feel to them. Could have used a bigger variation in enemies though.
What video card do you have Dark? I've heard ATI have had some problems with OpenGL in their later driver versions. I'm on a ATI card myself, but don't think I have any OpenGL games installed to confirm it.

No, I have a Nvidia 8600 GT. I deleted the game, but I will download it again if someone finds a fix to that problem I have. Tried every idea you guys had until now and nothing worked.

I just downloaded this game because of this thread, used to play it a lot some years ago, we even played it on LAN parties in the arena mode...
Don't know what you are on about, sure the camera is not ultra smooth, but it definately is not unplayable for me. The package I found on the net came with these instructions:
Quote: | Included in the archive:
1. v1.001 patch
2. utilities and mods to fix the menu and black text errors on a modern OS.
Install Blade of Darkness and apply patch. If experiencing the black text and
menu bug, perform the following:
1. Install the rOpenGL.dll to "\Blade of Darkness\Bin\Raster" directory.
2. Install the BOD Mod Loader v0.5a. This will install defaulty to a folder
inside the game directory called "BODLoader."
3. Install the fog fix mod by extracting the contents of the file "atm_fogfix.rar"
to "\Blade of Darkness\BODLoader\Mods" folder. This is needed when using
the rOpenGL rasterer.
4. Set the following compatibility options on blade.exe in the "\Blade of Darkness\Bin"
directory as follows:
A. Windows NT 4.0 (service Pack 5) compatibility mode
B. Disable visual themes
C. Disable desktop composition
D. Run this program as Admin
5. When launching Blade.exe, a game launcher menu is first invoked to set options
before launching the game. Select "setup" and set video to "rOpenGL" and sound
to "DirectSound3D software emulation."
6. After setting options in the game launcher, launch the game and select "MODS"
on the main menu (this is the BOD Mod Loader installed earlier). Next select
"Setup" under MODS menu and then enable the OpenGL fog fix v1.2 MOD.
Installation of mod can be verified under "Installed Mods" section.
Now BOD should be playable with proper text and menus. CD not required to play. |
Followed the instructions exactly, and everything seems alright, except that the image seems stretched to the 16:10 resolution, but definately not unplayable.

lol, ancient thread. yeah, I played severance a few years back on win7. I had to install some atipatch or ragepatch, forgot the exact name, to fix the fog though. I think that's what it was called. not sure if the gog version includes that fix or worked out it's own fix. but the game is definitely playable from start to finish on win7. I did a barbarian playthrough.

Game's been re-released on Steam apparently.
Quote: | RE-RELEASE OF A TRUE GENRE-DEFINING GAME
We are happy to bring Blade of Darkness back to life, an enduring classic that, at the time of its release, inspired many games in the action-adventure genre through its approach to combat. With this edition we've re-engineered the game to work on modern PC hardware, added widescreen support up to 4K resolution, introduced new display settings, and improved its overall stability. At the same time, the gameplay, content, and the story are untouched — featuring all the game’s quirks and charm. |

Yeah, the Steam version is essentially the classic one but with full compatibility, proper widescreen support (at last!), AA and a few minor UI tweaks. I snagged it some days ago, although it's just a re-release it definitely is the best version of the game.
