It's time to upgrade my pc. Unfortunately I didn't keep track of the hardware since my last build.

My current specs:
Case: Cosmos 2
Mobo: Asus Sabertooth P67
CPU: Intel I7-2600K
Ram: 16 GB Corsair Vengeance DDR3
GPU: 2 Sapphire HD 6950 2GB DDR5 in crossfire
PSU: Chieftec APS 1000c
HDD1: OCZ Vertex 3 SATA III 120GB
HDD2: WD Velociraptor 300 GB
Monitor 1: IIYAMA ProLite G2773HS
Monitor 2: Oculus DK2

I mainly want 2 things out of my upgrade:
- More fps: The goal is to have 75+ fps in Elite. (Thank you Oculus) The main issue here is my GPU afaik.
- A 2nd SSD to dual boot Linux. I'm betting Linux gaming is going to happen in the 'near' future thanks to Valve OS, the new OpenGL and hardware manufacturers finally pledging decent driver support.

What I had in mind so far:
HDD: OCZ Vector150 240 GB
GPU: Sapphire TRI-X R9-290X-4GB-OC or Gigabyte GTX 780 Ti

This is my best guess, which doesn't mean much tbh.
So any help is appreciated!

Going by the current beta (Will have to see how it is for the upcoming beta 2) then for 75+ FPS in Elite at higher settings you'd either have to sacrifice AA or go SLI/Crossfire.

If you want to save a bit you could also go for the non-X version of the 290, less than a 10% performance gain but you do save a bit though if you do need the best possible FPS you'd go for the full model.
(I'm using the non-X model of this at the moment - not listed on that website -, cost was around 4300 SEK - http://www.alternate.nl/SAPPHIRE/VAPOR-X-R9-290X-4GB-GDDR5-TRI-X-OC-%2811226-09-40G%29-grafische-kaart/html/product/1139698?tk=7&lk=9365 - full mode was priced at 5400 SEK. )

Can't help much with Nvidia recommendations, for the performance you seek the 780Ti is a bit too big of a difference compared to the regular 780 (But I could be remembering wrong.) and stuff like the Titan Black using the full GK 100 or so chip are priced at around a 1000 Euro which is pretty high. (The Gigabyte model you linked to seems good to me, reviews are favorably as well so it's just the price that could be a issue.)

Thanks JBeckman, a few € 100 more or less isnt a real problem so it will be the 290x or 780 Ti.
Disabling AA isn't a problem, you can see the physical pixels of the DK2 screen so...

a few questions though:
- Is there a big difference between the 290x and the 780 Ti?
- Will my CPU become a (big) bottleneck with these cards?
- Is a R9 295 x2 worth it price/performance wise? Will my cpu be able to keep up with it?

Your CPU is absolutely fine, the Sandy Bridge architecture is a great one and if you take the time to look for some benchmarks, you will see the difference in FPS between SB and Haswell is somewhere in the single digits. The only real benefit of Z87/Z97 are the connectivity ports. But you can solve that, to some extent, by grabbing a Z77/H77(sp?) board in the far future. After further googling your board up, I think there might be some issues with the PCI Express 2.0 card slot, as the 295x2 runs in CF. while it might be fine on 3.0 with a 8x8 conf, the 2.0 bus might be a little too slow, tho you shouldn't heed my word on this as I have never crossfired or sli'd any cards on PCI Express 2.0.

Doesn't the 295x2 run on 1 PCIe port?
Otherwise whats the point? You could just buy 2 seperate 290x cards instead?

Edit: I've been reading up on the 295x2. Anyone know if my PSU can even handle this?
The Tomshardware review mentions some pretty specific power requirements

Quote:
We’ll give you a definitive answer on consumption in the following pages. However, let’s use 500 W as a nice, round figure. The PCI-SIG electromechanical specification rates a 16-lane PCI Express slot for up to 75 W. A six-pin auxiliary connector is rated for the same 75 W. And you get 150 W from an eight-pin connector. Two of those eight-pin plugs plus a motherboard slot should add up to 375 W, leaving us about 125 W short of our target

Quote:
"The PCI spec was created as a guideline for wide compatibility and thermal density within a two-slot form factor. The 295X2 is about pushing performance, not wide compatibility, and as a result requires carefully-chosen infrastructure by DIYers. This selection criteria for PSUs and cases…will appear on amd.com after launch. When it comes to PSUs, the 295X2 will separate the wheat from the chaff, so to speak. The best PSUs will use low-gauge wiring and high-output MOSFETs...”

I don't even know what that means! Laughing

Do you have a specific neurological syndrome that forces you to buy two GPUs at a time?

Not really, I'd rather stay away from a crossfire setup this time tbh.
But I do want to buy the best card my pc can handle right now.

its far from upgrade time.... maybe just get new cpu. Any other part wont speed up anything.

Any wtf bother with sli/cf setups? Just get one powerfull card. As for cpu. Absolutely no need to get new one until we have real intel 8 cores cpus

Do NOT get a new CPU. The i7-2600k is *magnificent* and will NOT struggle or hold back any device you put in your system. The only thing to upgrade on the system is definitely the GPU, since the 6950 is getting long in the tooth and you'll see the best result from getting a new card. Probably best to wait for the 880 though, see what happens with the market prices then.

Right now? 780 or R9-290. The 780ti is better but far more costly so the price/performance is less tempting, same with the 290x.

I am willing to spend that little extra.
So purely quality of the card and drivers, 780ti or 290x?

Gigabyte, or if you're in the US, EVGA for the awesome customer service.
