Only people claiming it has shitty controls are the people who always used the buttons instead of the analog sticks to punch. As for me, I have always used the analog sticks so it feels about the same as the others to me.
This iteration did away completely the option to use buttons for punches. Thus, the bitching and claims of shitty controls.

Based on the PS3 demo I don't think they are shitty controls but the fact you can no longer fake a shot and the way it can sometimes get 'stuck' with you stood there like a fool because you didn't gesture in precisely the right way (somewhat negating the analogue'ness of it all) makes you wonder. I do think it's better than previous games, and a lot more fluid & fast (with analogue sticks) but sometimes you can end up punching in the wrong direction or with the wrong type of punch because of the way it works - and for the record I don't 'suck' and I always used analogue right through the entire series. The new blocking system is a lot more fair and less gamey, but it seems quite easy (in the heat of battle) for it to misinterpret a block for a punch which is annoying.
...all that said it's the best boxing game, and I can't wait for my copy.

Color me stupid, but first time playing this series, so I've got a few questions.
So how do I do stronger punches? Sure, I can wail on a guy for 5-6 rounds, never knocking him out once, but that does little overall. I'd love to knock someone on their ass. My first two fights, I managed to knock guys down a few times, but since then...nothing. Any pointers would be appreciated.
Oops, guess that's only one question. Thanks!

well . you have to press RB button while trowing the punch , the game its fun , but...... damm ea , why didnt they make the option to use the buttons to trow punches. it will be a lot easier, ive created a boxer , fought 18 matches , lost 4 by now .

well they could stick multiplayer up their asses, aint buyin the original!!!
another thing the carrer mode looks a litle empty , hummm that was all the point of playin this game , still havin fun .
this guy in a forum have a point "It's their life's mission to defend the game tooth and nail and they make points like "buttons are unrealistic" which is totally unfounded and makes no sense. Tell me....how is flicking a stick more realistic than pushing a button?"

anyone use a camera to create a custom guy? mine looks just like me (except for the super big muscles!) but it still looks like a video game character, not like a character model with a photo of my face slapped on it.

Personally, I never throw haymakers (rb) but it kinda depends on how you box.
I find the easiest way is to either counter punch (block just before the other person hits you then throw a punch back) or by weaving out the way and throwing a punch back.
Both do massive damage if they connect cleanly.
Also, work on the body as it drains their stamina and makes a) their punches weaker and b) harder for them to get up.
I've played the amateur bit this morning. Got 3 KO's and win decision.

i hate how you cant use the sliders to make a boxer in this unless you have uploaded a photo first
if tiger woods can let you make someone with only sliders then why cant this game?

It's just a shame that people like my dad can no longer play the game because gesture recognition (as opposed to analogue control ) can be confusing and cumbersome in a fast paced game. I like it regardless and have always used it myself, but it is a barrier for other people from all different walks of life - and a simple on/off switch and the ability to filter matches online would have avoided this problem.

tbh, I think people can adapt to the controls very quickly. Remember when Skate came out and everyone moaned. I personally couldn't use anything else now, it would seem wrong and inaccurate. Same applies to this game imo.
Xbox.com have posted some tips on their website for those struggling for knockouts. For experienced FN players there's not too much there but its worth a read regardless.

If you cant play with the sticks, it will definitely be an initial (and perhaps permanent) turn off.
But, since I am very used to playing with sticks... there's no way this game is not head and shoulders above Fight Night Round 3. The AI is LEAPS above FNR3. Customization is FAR FAR better. Online world championships is pretty dambned cool.
I like the new blocking and punching schemes because it is MUCH easier to move while bobbing and weaving at the same time than it was in FNR3.
The new physics is really great which allows for true infighting and glancing blows. The damage system to the face is much better.
The punching mechanic overall is just much better. My punches thrown totals much more closely resemble true to life numbers rather than the 800 punches/round you would see in FNR3.
Improved Legacy Mode.
Many more boxers. Downloadable boxers seamlessly through the network.
Your issue has to be control related. Surely.
You can always try Punchout for the wii.

Only thing i am having trouble with are the training games. But, thats only because they are different.
I am sure I will get the hang of those just like i did in previous games.

can you have multiple fighters at the same time (i.e. not within the same careers but essentially have 2 careers on the HDD)?
I kinda want to make a me (featherweight) but also play with the heavyweights.

I am glad EA decided to go hardcore with this game. I hated the analog controls in the first one and only reason I bothered with the game was the button mashing and the graphics. Now they have taken out one reason, not gonna waste a disk or my time on this one. I see a lot of complaining on the EA forums about the lack of button controls, so I dont know if EA made a wise choice here. Back to Punchout for me and my friends!!!

Depends on how many copies they sold of it. And, I am guessing it is quite a few.
Of course your going to see a lot of whinning... the people happy with the game are busy playing.
Punchout is fun. But, it's no Fight Night.
It's like comparing an old nintendo football game to Madden 2009 or something. it isn't even in the same league.
I can clearly see why people who enjoy Punchout over Fight Night would be disappointed with the controls in Fight Night.
