this one's better, since you can retract points from individual skills, not just reset everything.

Lets see, the plain and simple fact that there is an official 2KGames Borderlands activation page? This means there is some sort of account/CD-Key provided with the game SOMEWHERE. Obviously, if it's not provided on any readable documentation it's provided somewhere. The only other place is on the CD itself.

What exactly does the technology being introduced in 2004 have to do with anything?

I see logical thinking still isn't a trait many of you nubs have acquired yet.

Do you honestly beleive that 2KGames would have Borderlands be their FIRST game to not use a CD-Key of some sort? The games success hinges on it's multiplayer coop experiance. They would loose a TON of sales if they didn't have the client authenticate with a cd-key master server first for multiplayer.

Now, I could be wrong - But I highly doubt it. You know, that thing called LOGIC - You should use it sometimes. It's not like the securom on CD CD-Key method hasn't been widely used before. It's been used a ton by other publishers.

Read the article made 5 years ago. It's allready been heavily used by a few publishers. The only reason it hasn't been seen on wide-scale yet is because the 'big' publishers haven't used it yet. I don't doubt for a second that 2KGames is finally using it. Considering their track-record with copy-protection schemes. Bioshock was one of the first AAA titles to use the securom online activation method.

Keep in mind that I wouldn't think it used this technology if it wasn't for the fact that there is clearly online activation for the game which will be turned on tonight at midnight.

I guess we'll get our answer at midnight. The activation page could be nothing more then a registration page for stupid shit. However, the wording 'Activation' usually isn't used for a 'Register the game' type deal.

There's no paul.dll or similar support file among the Steam pre-loaded files, using the Steam content toolbox or what it's called there is a option to enter a cd-key for the review copy but nothing for the normal game edition, it's possible such files will be added when it's unlocked though.

It might also be for the D2D or Gamersgate download editions, unsure about retail copies but they're probably unprotected if there's no serial in the manual or game box.
(Sure it could be engraved on the disc but there should be a note or something else as well in my opinion.)

Toolbox?

Can you use that to enter the decrypt key and decrypt the files? Could turn out useful when it gets released.

It's been said that there are files missing from the retail disc which leads me to beleive there are files missing from the Steam pre-load as well. (This has happened in the past) There is likely a 0-Day patch of some sort.

I wish Sad Told ya mate, I won't be able to afford it this week. I had enough "spare" cash to buy Torchlight, simply because that was only €15. I get paid again next week and I'll buy it then, of course, but sadly that means no Friday night bash for me Sad

I can't decrypt the files as the key isn't available yet (Perhaps midnight between the 26th and the 27th?) and yeah now that you mention it some games using release date protection do exclude the EXE and sometimes other files only to download them once it has verified the date. Smile

EDIT: Borderlands compared to the press review copy options and then Just Cause 2 to show the lack of decryption key. (Can't be used for anything of course without the game.)

Also, I just checked out other games I own on steam. I know that SF4 uses Securom on the retail release - And the securom files normally included are nowhere to be found in the SF4 steam directory.

The purchased version of borderlands is just the preload content on a cd with a launcher that tells you if 0-day content is missing.
