At least it's a major performance boost without Tesselation, and let's be honest, that's the only reason DX9 became popular so quickly compared to DX8

Hmm? DX9 was for a very long time ignored. Only when SM3 was introduced in DX9c it became something to look for (and the entire debacle with ATI Laughing). Smile

Performance test, those extra effects are quite costly.

(As already shown in various other forms like the Unigine benchmark for Tesselation or Call of Pripyat for HDAO or HBAO above normal SSAO.)

That. Is. PATHETIC.

Seriously, what the fuck?! That test makes DX10 look like an angel. At least with DX10 we got nice performance boost in some games (FarCry 2, RE5).

Performance does take quite a dive with those additional effects that's true though DirectX 10 or 10.1 (Mostly about AA performance.) when implemented similar to Far Cry 2 and HAWX (Or DMC4/RE5) without any additional visual effects can improve performance a bit but when you use the additional effects and techniques like say Lost Planet or Clear Sky (Geometry shaders and such.) does then performance will be lower compared to the "simpler" DX9 renderer. Smile

Same here with DX11 and as said previously tesselation alone can give a 30% or so performance hit if applied to many different objects (Unigine benchmark.) used alongside a improved SSAO technique (High-definition ambient occlusion or HDAO and then also HBAO whatever that stands for.) plus other post processing improvements we'll see quite the hit to performance, nothing surprising at all really, depends on how you implement it.

Ofcourse compared to 100K polygon models tesselation is (supposedly.) pretty light.
(Which I guess will be very used on X720 or what it'll be called if MS makes it DX11 or DX12 or something same with other improvements and additions and once that takes off we'll really see a increase in DX11 usage compared to the few additional DX10 titles that were released, or so I see things at the moment.)

Yeah....I still remember being the proud owner of a GeForce 5800 FX graphics. OMFG what a shitty graphics card. It didn't properly support all SM2 functions making it stuck somewhere between DX8 and DX9.

I remember trying to play HL2 on it but I couldn't set the DX9 functions on properly. It wasn't until the GeForce 6 series came out that NVIDIA got they're shit togheter. AH...the good ol' days.

"this week" is the latest update according to their community guy on the official forum.

Quote:
Due to circumstances out of our control we won't be able to release the PC DiRT 2 demo until next week. I will update everybody with an exact day ASAP.

I know a lot of people were getting excited about the prospect of the demo coming out this week, all I can say is this was the plan originally but during testing we discovered a problem and to ensure that the demo works properly on everybody's PC's we've had to fix this issue.

I'm sure you guys understand because if most people were able to play the demo except you, it would be very frustrating.

why it's dx9 vs d11 and not dx10 vs dx11, there would be probably no difference i suppose Laughing

I think the Codemasters community forum guy is being fed a load of BS from whoever is in charge of the demo release. He keeps saying he'll post up when he has an actual date but he knows for sure there wont be one today.

Looks like the "demo" is going to be the full release as it's out on Tuesday.

There is a demo, but no one on here is getting it. I doubt anyone at codemasters are in a hurry to release it. i would think Monday at the earliest but since the game is out Tuesday, i'd put money on the actual game release coming before the Demo. I hope i'm wrong because i wouldn't mind trying it out over the weekend but i don't have much faith in a demo coming any time soon.

Demo will be available tomorrow maybe.

There's already a link/button for the demo on this page. Yet to be stored on the server.

When it will be available, this link will work:
ftp://downloads.codemasters.com/demo/dirt2_pc_demo.zip
