I like this game. No idea what the stupid reviewers are on about. It's definitely not a high value production game, but it's pretty interesting.
There's actually quests with different options, and really different and noticeable consequences. Space combat is cool, all the rpg elements are here and well implemented. There's plenty of text, dialogue, journal entries to read if you're into lore. Story seems okay and intrigues me although I'm quite early in the game.
There are some spelling errors and translation is not perfect in certain areas. It's not very balanced so it's a bit hard in some areas. Also controls are a bit weird, and generally don't do what you want them to do. But you get used to it.
It definitely feels much more like an RPG than an RTS. I suggest you give it a try if you like RPGs.

Omg it's so unbalanced...the mission where you exit the precursor portal and have a berserker fleet waiting for you... I mean wtf? I have full shields and armor, I enter the system and there is NOTHING I can do. I just get pounded by the fucking berserkers at the portal exit. Aliens come soon after but by the time they're there my shields are already gone and hull at half strength. Even if I somehow manage to survive the first wave, the two super chimeras don't die and kill me.
I tried staying put, going forward, going back, going left, going right, with fighters, with no fighters, pretty much everything. Nothing I can do...

Yep, i remember that but i managed to win somehow
But there were a couple of tries. Wait for the final battle...now that's fucking sick! Thank satan, the last mothership you get is fast (faster than some fighters!) and can do the job on itself.
But the fact is that the game is unbalanced.

Unbalanced?
How can a campaign be unbalanced? Difficult? Maybe. Unbalanced? No fucking way.
The thing i kinda like about this game is how some encounters just cant be won on your own, or need a different approach (or need to be avoided entirerily).
Mercenaries are in the game for a reason, and although they are kinda expensive, especially to be used throughout multiple system, they can make your life a lot easier.

Well if the difficult curve has a lot of ups and downs then you could call it unbalanced. Gives you the feeling you do something wrong. That does not add to a good gaming experience.

It IS unbalanced. Couple of missions I do and handle enemies without even stopping or launching my fighters. Suddenly a mission like the one I described happens and there's nothing I can do. I had to do 30 tries to get that mission right, I simply couldn't have done anything. And I couldn't have gotten mercenaries, because the mission is really long and I was in non-human space before that. They would have probably died anyway.
Mercenaries are useful if you know when to use them. But you don't because game almost never tells you what kind of resistance you're gonna encounter. So your option is to always have them with you, which is really expensive as you need to pay them again for every portal you pass.

I for one hate it when all the enemies scale to your level in a game. It removes all sense of realism. The fact that there are encounters you can pretty much get done in a few seconds, while there are other encounters where you will sweat blood to survive is cool enough in my opinion.
Let's also add, that a lot depends on the equipment and tactics you choose. I've seen encounters that seemed impossible at first, but with a different set of modules they were kinda easy.
I'm not past the game of course, but since others have finished it already, i have to conclude, that most important encounters CAN be won.
Oh, and I'm pretty sure there are some, that you are simply not meant to win So its always good to keep it in mind, that some missions might just not be possible, until you get a lot stronger, or not be possible ever.

I hate level scaling as well, but a lot of games have it without level scaling and kept the balance. Sure some missions should be easier and some should be harder. But if I encounter a hard missions suddenly and unexpectedly I should at least have a chance to retreat, and come back later or with different equipment/mercenaries. This game doesn't offer that. If you get attacked by a lot of enemies, you can either reload a save way before the mission and get mercenaries/better equipment, or just keep reloading and hope you win this time. (Which happened to me at two times in the game now). Which is not fair.
I had no problems with the rest of the game(haven't finished it yet), but at those two places it is simply near impossible because it is unbalanced and poorly tested. In both cases I am obviously expecting help for certain parties because there are multiple cruiser ships and dozens on fighters I don't stand a chance. My only mission was to survive long enough before help came. I just had to reload 30-40 times, trying different tactics and hoping that my mothership doesn't get destroyed by the time help did come. And the fact is, different tactics meant squat, it was all about how lucky I was so that most of their missiles missed my ship. And I had good equipment. I believe I earned maximum amount of cash on every mission before that and upgraded with expensive stuff just before that mission.

Loved the first one, the second, so-so (the random ctd thing ).
I think this is the best of the 3 so far.
BTW from what i remember from the previous SW games, chimeras dont like missiles, so load your fighters up with them and give it a try

So I take it you sided with the old empire or something? 'Cause my ending was way different. I choose new empire and
Spoiler: | the game ended with a huge battle (maybe hundreds of ships) between a coalition fleet (both empires + corporations + FTU + other) vs. the InoCo AI and berserks. Quite a battle, but my poor laptop really struggled to keep the game stable... Overall though, that ending just felt rushed and incomplete. There was NOTHING that even suggested it's gonna end like this before the last battle started! But still, I really enjoyed the game up to the end. |
One thing I didn't get to try (sudden ending mission) was if any of the news on the mercenary network were actually valid. I mean, when they started advertising that USS now recruits people for odd jobs, did they actually offer anything if you traveled to a sector of theirs?

I presume that we can talk about 3rd instalment of this game SW3 Civil War. God damn this game is made by sadists for masochists. On medium difficulty I don't see any way to escape with me newly acquired pirate mothership to change her ID. When I escape the dust cloud some mofos swarm me with dozens of missiles and I don't know how to reach the portal...

Overall was quite short pitty u cant continue, now that i had really good hardware
