Ah amazing, linux based so it should be pretty much ported everywhere pretty soon.

People will be jailbreaking their PS3 from their fucking toasters by the time this is all done.

Personally I'm hoping the PSP becomes the first custom JB device, simply for the lulz! The PSP, who's Pandora battery originally came from Sony's jigstick, being hacked and used to hack the PS3 using another Sony-original jigstick method.

Oh and the irony and poetry of that. It's delicious.

Nope, not yet.

Is this thought to be a difficult thing to do or too far off in the future?

Let me just consult my crystal ball Very Happy In all seriousness; it depends on how fast people can now break the encryption on the BD-ROMs .. and whether or not it can be done externally from the PS3.
PS3 jailbreak is not a jigstick method at all.

The hackers on PSX-Scene disagree with you. The original PSJB was analysed and the conclusion was that the method it is based on is the VERY SAME method Sony uses to regain access to the machine in order to fix a bad FW flash.

Unless you have some proof to the contrary, I'll continue to believe them Wink

No, I'm pretty sure that he's right. A SONY JIG would not go through all of the jiggery pokery of pretending it's a USB hub with devices constantly connecting and reconnecting. It's an exploit built around the way in which the jig is recognised but it's not a 1:1 clone of any SONY jig to my knowledge.

I know and I never said it was a 1:1 clone... I said it was a jigstick METHOD. It can't be a 1:1 clone, same as the Pandora, as that *would* be using Sony code and they could shut it down based on that. How the current PSJB works is, according to the analysis, based on hardware and an exploit Sony uses to regain access for flashing.

No, it's not a method either. It's a genuine heap overflow exploit. I still think Sony can patch this pretty easily, but time will tell. If Sony can fix the heap overflow, the exploit can be updated whatever they want but it won't work anymore.

What, you mean like the PSP? If Sony could have done it, they WOULD HAVE ALREADY. Rather than spending millions in ridiculous court cases, desperately trying to block the device from the public, they're have just PATCHED the exploit. They haven't.

Sony removed OtherOS just at the mere *idea* of a hack via Linux. This device, and now the code, has been available for over 2 weeks.. and all Sony have done is drag modchip supplies through courts.

Hell, I could be wrong - and if I am I'll apologise - but I strongly doubt that I am Wink

With the Jailbreak being available for just a week or so, I can guarantee you Sony wouldn't have released this already, I'm not sure if you know how testing works at Sony but I can assure you this is not done in one night. Sony also has several other items they want to ship in with the new firmware and pushing a firmware release with the option that they fucked something up to block a hack with the possibility that legit users are affected is a complete nogo. If Sony can fix it, and I'm pretty sure about it, I'm almost possitive you won't find it in the next firmware but the firmware after that. This ofcourse depends on how long the next firmware will take.

So again, why didn't they fix it on the PSP? Or how did they issue a new firmware and remove OtherOS so quickly last time? *shrugs* You can be the doomsayer if you want, but unless you work for Sony .. it's all just conjecture. Yes; on BOTH our parts. I am firmly of the opinion that if they could have, they would have. As for "not affecting legitimate users" - what a crock. They don't give a flying fuck about you, me, or any one else.. and they proved that when they went thermonuclear and removed OtherOS.

-edit-

Oh and either way; it doesn't matter! I won't be updating passed 3.41 now Very Happy

I'm not sure guys, best bet is to ask on the PSX-Scene forum. The ATMega32U works fine, apparently, so perhaps the ATXMega128 would be good too?

PSP used another method, that was no heap overflow. OtherOS was removed for safety precautions, no hack was there *yet*.

It was removed because of the THREAT of a hack. Jeez, you really do work for Sony, don't you? "Safety"? Newsflash! Running Linux on the PS3 will cause the PS3 to explode and the plastic shards could cause injury!
