Anyone tried demo available on Steam?
What can you do with it (limitations and such)?

100 turn limit. Dunno about the custom options since I've just had time to do a fast play now.

only for .co.uk and .eu now mate
http://www.direct2drive.eu
.com you no longer are preordering as the gam is out in that region so you will most likely not get the dlc or free civ3, they changed the promo banner aswel removing those items from the us site so you are to late bud

But all of these new features have one thing in common. They're all small enough changes to have very little impact on the way Civilization plays, meaning this game has all the same pitfalls as previous Civ titles. For most of the time nothing is happening, and you're clicking your way through turns in an addicted trance. Then every so often a terrible attacking force will come out of nowhere, you'll have no means of reacting to it since units often take at least 10 turns to build, and in the worst cases you're left with no choice but to restart an earlier save.
|
Derpa derp reviewer. No attack force ever came out of nothing in any previous installment and there is usually stuff to do every turn. (Like gathering intelligence about the other players armies, or managing your towns etc.) From the review it sounds like the derpaderp guy played two games and then went back to playing Halo. Just like when he played Civ IV. |
Horrible reviewer. I could write the same thing from watching couple of preview videos. |
Yeah, Eurogamer reviews are usually hit or miss, they like to focus on the negative aspects. I have not yet bothered to read that review, but that example just isn't completely true. As said, you should have some troops guarding and/or wandering around borders, cities can now defend themselves, and lastly, if you have some spare gold you can always by instant troops.

In a nutshell:
- Greece, Egypt or Persia
- 6 civilizations in a rather small map (+ 12 city states)
- Difficulty can be chosen
- 100 turn cap

Just installed a ran the demo, the first thing I noticed, how ugly is the terrain plains? The graphic is terrible, is this just me or ?
The interface looks way worse than civ4, hopefully its more a get used to issue.

Its not all bad though, I noticed something new and neat, city states! Its like a one city nation that doesn't compete on the same level as other nations.

Unfortunately, the proper release of this game skidrowrepackshit usually do not appear, I do not fear the ban will not run my normal IP pirated games on steam.

Very much mixed feelings after my first 100 rounds. The game felt kinda shallow compared to civ 4. The combat was meh, but kinda new and could potential be good. The city states seemed interesting, but they basically just sent out orders to "real" civilization to eliminate another city state, very boring. The graphics was nothing special, actually looked worse than civ4 in some aspects. The music was terrible, hopefully there are more soundtracks in the full game.
What else should I write, well there seemed to be little research and units, but that is probably because I'm used to civ4 with all expansion + that excellent mod which name eludes me, but adds a ton of units and research.
I can see myself enjoying it for a few hours until an expansion and or a really great mod comes out. Definitely not a buy right away game for me.

I just succeeded in cracking demo so it can last more then 100 turns.
If it is ok by moderators, I'll post solution here.
Hint:
EndGameMenu.lua has code for manipulation of end demo screen (so it can be tweaked to just close, instead bring you back to main menu).

I wouldn't mind you sharing that little tidbit. Not a moderator, but, you know. PM would be awesome.

Even if you can just close the menu instead of quitting the game, how are you able to continue playing more turns?

Anyway, it didn't worked properly, as I hoped.
It would return control to the game, and you could play up to turn 101, but after that, end turn button just doesn't work.
.
EDIT:
What I did was deleting this line:
Events.ExitToMainMenu();
^part of OnMainMenu() function
from EndGameMenu.lua (using notepad), which would return control to the game instead goind back to main menu. But as I said, I couldn't progress further from turn 101.

Code: | if( uiMsg == KeyEvents.KeyDown )
then
if(wParam == Keys.VK_ESCAPE ) then
OnMainMenu();
end |
Possibly just replacing OnMainMenu(); with Close();? The latter is a valid function call, I can't test it right now, though.
