Yes, even by me. Couldn't count the number of hours I spent playing BG2, last time as recently as a year ago. Yet I still have no problem saying its combat, again with the exception of spell combat( which is why I mostly played as a mage in those games), sucked.
That's hardly unusual for an RPG though. Tons of RPGs have crappy combat. Another game which I consider pretty much the best RPG ever made, Planescape Torment, also has crappy combat( and also uses the Infinity Engine with RTwP). Heck, even Fallout 1&2, two of my other favorite RPGs, have pretty bad combat *despite* being turn-based. VampireTM:Bloodlines is another example of a great RPG with crappy combat. There's tons of them.

Ok, so we'll just have to disagree on that. I enjoyed the combat in Infinity Engine games and I always played as a paladin type of character.

Yeah. And the re-imagined graphics aren't that great to begin with. Looks like some third rate crap-mod to me. Of course this will bomb. |
That's not why I was asking. I think you guys are overreacting.
If you say that turn based = good, active pause = shit (upstart_69 said it) then you're basically saying Baldur's Gate is shit and we all know it's not.
Isometric view with active pause can have almost as much tactical depth as turn based IMO. |
Nobody said BG is shit. And I didn't see anyone say active pause was shit. No, what *I'm* saying is that this is Jagged Alliance only in name. I like both turn based and real-time with a pause games. Baldur's Gate was awesome. Jagged Alliance was awesome. But JA2 without the turn based play isn't JA2. It's just a derivative. The turn based play is what made the JA games. Take the turn-based play away and you take the micromanaging away and that's what made those games good. And, no, pausing it isn't the same.

^ This. And I loved BG+BG2+IWD+IWD2. However, no matter how much I enjoyed them, their combat never had the tactical depth of JA2 and TOEE. Now did these two games rival the story/dialogue/character interaction in the above mentioned games? Of course not. All games have their strong points, and not-as-strong points. Which is not to say combat sucked in Infinity engine games - but it was not the main point that the game was based around, either.
And to turn the tables on the examples kept being brought up... What about a Baldur's Gate 2 remake - Action RPG style? With maybe one or two lines of dialogue between hordes of nameless baddies flooding in - ripping out story almost completely. How about "Baldur's Gate 2: Reloaded" for a title. And how about the developers say they are keeping it to its roots and being very respectful to the original while doing so. How do you think that would fly with oldschool BG fans?

The game isn't out yet and all you guys are saying it will be shit, as if you have already played it. And YOU, specifically, said it will be a "pile of shit", because they changed turn based to active pause.

And you failed to respond to my points and give any clear indication of why you think it will be a great "re-make", besides the fact you don't read well and just take snippets without understanding what I am saying so not much of a point arguing with you about it.

Where did I say the game will be great ? You're the one that has reading problems. I have no idea how the game will be, because it's not out yet!
It might be good, it might be just average or it might actually be shit, but that's not the point. My only point was that you critisize the game before it even came out and that you critisize it because it will be real time with active pause, as if using that system guaranteed that a game will be shit.

Noooo don't use 1.13 on your first playthrough, it makes things unnecessarily complex and pretty much destroys any semblance of balance. It took me like a week of tweaking to make 1.13 actually fun. Vanilla is perfectly playable with the official 1.12 patch.

Luke 23:34
The guy commenting the video seemed pretty positive but for me it looks just like a Zombie of a good game but in 3d. Maybe it will be interesting in its own way, but it will never be like JA2, simply because they went real-time. It's like what Arcania is to Gothic EDIT: No, sorry, Arcania wasnt even interesting. But it's a alpha, so we can only hope.

As a huge JA fan from JA1 all I can say is: TOTAL BS! I am not graphic whore obsessed with shiny awesomeness of new generation of games. Let's hope they will improve their alpha. The entire point of JA is AP system and non RT combat. I remember the time when I was so obsessed with a game that I even started calculating AP for actions IRL.

Yeah, I wish Nival (Creators of Silent Storm) would be making the JA sequel because they were the closest ones who got the formula right.
