And HL has sold more than 8 million copies and HL2 12 million copies what's your point? |

We can only hope it consists of 3x3 cm corridors, respawning enemies and 500000 cutscenes like all these amazing FPS we're getting now.

When didn't he
Seriously, I don't understand why it's important if eventually he was right or not.
The fact is the guy that made D3D considered the keycard model outdated in 1999 because another PC title surpassed it. And I have the impression the whole PC gaming industry felt like that back then.

Going from the current trend is "bad" and the reviewers will eat you alive for it which in return will get you fired unless you're an indie dev.
It's just how amazing the industry has become.

Same reason why Duke started as a 2D platformer but became a FPS. The old design was simply a thing of the past from that moment on.
To specify when I say the model is outdated I am talking about keycard hunting, keycards/doors/puzzles are very much welcomed in my book and I dearly miss them in today's Call of Dutys.

Alright let's forget about him. Is there any evidence the other game designers weren't considering them outdated by that time? |
Every game OTHER than HL, you mean? That kind of evidence?
See, you appear to have forgotten - or not even realised - that "key cards" still exist in all the non rail-shooter FPS; key codes. Take the vaunted BioShock for example; can't progress in the game until you find that dere keycode, sir boss man, no sir! Even when it's not key cards/codes, it's other miscellaneous items. See that door there? Nope, can't go through it until you've found all four pieces of the Big Daddy suit!!11 Weee! You don't see how that's even remotely similar to hunting for the key cards the newbies apparently hate so much?
Red, Yellow, Blue key cards became 0451, crowbars, Big Daddy suit pieces, et al. So you're going on about "the whole industry agrees that keycards are archaic! I'm right again! Woo! Go me!" -- when in fact you couldn't be more wrong. Same system, different names. All I'm lamenting is the constant bitching from gaming newbies about "down time" while they supposedly "hunt for the cards!" Cue crying. Then you have 3DR/Gearbox whining about "archaic videogame practices" and proclaiming to remove said system... only to instead have you running about waiting for a plot trigger, or hunting down pieces of some random device, before doors open. It's ridiculous, I don't know why they didn't just leave it as it was.
So yeah, Half-Life and Half-Life 2 are pretty much the only examples where "no key cards!! Keep them away!!!! *hisssssss*" worked out. Everyone else just got on with it .. it was an accepted part of FPS gaming. It was sure as hell a lot more enjoyable than the current trend of waist-high walls and cover-shooting mechanics. IMO of course.

I clarified I was talking about keycard hunting. I get what you are saying but in newer games I do not feel I am doing keycard hunting probably because the "modern keycards" are not hidden in obscure places. There's a huge difference between looking for something put somewhere you'd sort of expect in the environment and searching for a well hidden keycard with no narrative to back up why you are doing that.
Also HL has puzzles, vents to explore and stuff, you can consider these as "modern keycards" as well in the sense that you can't proceed until you do something specific (other than shooting) in a certain area. I'm also the guy that loved the platforming in the Xen levels of HL1

I wonder how the console version will work this time, no doubt it'll leak relatively early on once it's "gold" seeing the hype around the game, unfortunately Steamworks and that integration makes a early PC release impossible however a disc image could still appear but the key/decryption section is still server-side and at best available only hours before the release time anyway.
