Are you bored? Looking for some laughter? Consult this list now! http://microsites.ign.com/kfc/top99games/index.html
You can't spell ignorant without IGN.
While it did bring a little nostalgia, it also made me laugh. And laugh. And then weep for the readers of IGN...

its ok. nothing to take too seriously. about 1/3 of the games are from before 2000 which i think is ok. most of the best/classic games from pre2000 are with. games are just better nowadays. with some exceptions.

God top ten lists will never be right. Everyone has their own opinions.
BTW to the guy above, even though this is opinions here, how is SC3 above MGS 3? MGS 3 had a much better story and gameplay IMO. If anything, GameSpot should be shot for giving MGS 3 the rating they did.

that list is BS i seriously doubt more ppl woulda voted for Xenogears (number 40) over Starcraft and quite a few before that. Also super mario RPG at 36? Also no HL in that list? nor any games like Street fighter or The getaway, or even Call of duty. We all know cod has loads of fan boys yet more people like Ace combat 5 than this?

and anyways, games like jet set willy and harrier attack etc on spectrum computers and other oldies like that are better. Sensible soccer on amiga, etc. But they'd never get a look in nowadays as the graphics are now considered pants. but rock solid playability was their key - Hyper sports, track n field, bubble bobble, rainbow islands, chase hq, streets of rage, golden axe... them were the days.

Yea but they're claiming they did it by readers votes. i somehow doubt that some of them games were nominated and some more than others. Look on 95%+ sites with similar things the top 10 has, Super mario 64 (or mario of some kind) goldeneye, half life, Starcraft, grim fandango, doom, Zelda someting else something else etc. The fact this list is so drastically wrong it's just unbelievable.

well i think this list is listing the best games. or trying to. not what is best nostalgia wise.
i mean cmon, honestly. like super maro bros (1st) for example, how good is that game by todays standard? would you pay full-prize for a game like that? and if not, then why should it be high on the list?

you're right nailbiter. I wouldn't pay £40 for super mario 1 nowadays. thats a valid point, but i did at the time. obviously tastes change and games improve. I was playing sensible soccer earlier on my megadrive emulator, thinking its great, but those older games dont immerse you like newer games like pro evo soccer does. you get a warm feeling when you score on sensible, but you wanna shout out loud when you score on pro evo soccer, such is the degree of involvement. Even Goldeneye doesnt play as good as some of the others now. Halo was class, but in its heyday i think goldeneye was better. But nowadays halo pi$$es on goldeneye hands down IMO, the list will always change year in year out.
If it was polled 6 months ago, i'm sure San Andreas would have been number 1

The gameplay still IS good. I really enjoyed playing it on both NES and GBC. It's more fun than about 95% of what's coming out these days. Now the games have much more features, but most of them aren't worked out properly. In SMB all the features are worked out properly.

yeah, the newer game the higher on the lists, thats for sure. haha i remember our goty-list here at nforce last year. kotor 2 that just got released was really, really close to win. but today no one cares about that game.
and yes. sensible soccer was an awesome game!

of course it is/was good. im not doubting that for a second. hallo, its super mario ffs! but by todays standard it just cannot compete. gfx, controlls, sound, music, story, leangth etc is so much deeper, better now. well for most parts. bad games are obviously still released. but so were they back in the days as well.
lets take another example: metal gear for nes. 2 buttons. he couldnt have many enemies on the screen at the same time so he made it a sneaker game. made really hard to make it feel longer. etc. now compare that game to splinter cell:ct. billions of moves, shadows, lightning, music that reacts to environment, story (ok ok), movie cut sceenes, and so on. i dont know if this was a good example, im just trying to show evolution of the games. and today they are pretty complex some games. and they are not targeted only for kids anymore.

Full price? No. But were talking best games from all eras. Whatever happened to originality? Some of your basic formulas that went onto new games, started out on the NES. I could see games like LttP and SMB beating quite a few games from today. Not graphics wise of course...

I thought we were talking about the current best games, at this moment in time, not 15 years ago.
Sure, mario was good then, not now. There are far superior platformers out.

I've not looked at the list, they didn't sumarize it. But for the best games of all time they should be voting on a game that sticks in your mind even years later. Elite would do that for me, as would Mercenaries on the cbm 64. I almost forgot about Paradroid.

I believe they were talking about all time best games. Past to present? If we were talking about the current best games, how exactly would games from past systems end up to todays standards on a current list? From what I can gather the list is for all time top games according to the opinions of IGN and its readers. After i read through the top 20 I didnt bother to read any further as I just x'ed the site out. Its complete bull shit.
Ehh, mario is still good now. I sometimes find myself going back and playing older games. Especially when theres nothing new out now.

So this is meant to be an all time best, as in how good they were when you played them, be it one month ago or ten years ago.
Well that makes a lot of difference. I actually thought that 'A link to the past' was better then 'Ocarina of time'. But only if we're talking about at the point in time when I first played them, rather then now.

Well the list is supposed to be users nominated lists. so the 1 with the most votes = the winner. Like i said i highly doubt that some of them games got voted over classics.

Its unbeleivable how many classics have been missed of that list, if someone had said "these are the top 100 games of all time" to me at the pub and quoted that list, I would have thought they where joking.

yeah there was evolution...that just natural. but sometimes making things more complex does not necessarily mean to make something better.
mario was not only was fun to play but had a certain charm that todays games are not able to develop.
i won't bitch about mario not beeing on that list cause i don't play todays games and most of my favs are on that list anyways. but i think some old games...as ugly they might seem compaired to todays eyecandy-o-rama...still play better than 99% of todays games...
