Graphics suck. Look the same as the last flight sim.

it's not about graphics or jets for me at all. Sure, I don't mind hopping in an F-18 and flying a route that normally takes me 40 minutes in the real world in only 4 minutes. It's not even necessarily about the flight model. It's realistic enough for what I use it for. And that's flying IFR, only occasionally looking out the window to see if I've got the field in sight. FSX does that plenty well. And, it runs a fuckton better for me than x-plane does.

Exactly
I'm a Flight Simulator fan, but I can't stand anything that isn't a jet.
I really don't understand the whole sight seeing aspect to flying a Cessna at low altitude. They have horrible ground imagery and trees/buildings that look out of place.
Perhaps they have an amazing multiplayer aspect to it that makes flying these things fun.
Hopefully I get an invite soon |
The whole point to flying a 152/172 is because it -is- a simulation. Not a game. It's about improving your skills when it comes time for real life, and the majority of people out there start off flying with a 152 or 172.

No mods, Hawaii-only, free-to play-game. Failure ahead.

Err?
I have no intention on becoming a pilot, I don't think a lot of other Flight Simulator players do either.
Also i got accepted into the BETA today!, downloading now.

So the engine has been improved well from FSX, the cockpit graphics are nice, the scenery is similar to FSX but a little more polished.
The missions are ok but seem a little boring.
Hopefully they put emergency missions in, they are mostly what I played in FSX.

this game is sad. There is not one SIM fan that is going to be happy with it. This is for people that want a game, not a sim. But to be fair, that's exactly what I expected because, more or less, that's exactly what they said it would be.
However, I could have swore I saw that it would appeal to new and casual players as well as long time fans of the Flight SIM series. THAT is a lie. This is purely aimed at people who just want to fly around and get achievements.
This is Take On Helicopters only Hawaii instead of Seattle and with planes instead of helicopters. And less sim than TOH.
Should have expected that with an install size of about 1.7gb vs 16.5gb or so for fsx + acceleration and no additional addons. I guess it's nice for casual players or, as someone said above, someone with no interest in actually being a pilot. I now have zero hope, no make that NEGATIVE hope, that there will be anything helicopter related in it. And in the off chance there is, that it will suck any less than the helicopter flight modelling/control in FSX. I'll give it some more time tomorrow beyond the 30 minutes it's gotten so far.

What sucks is the fact this is more game then sim now.It doesn't fly like any of the former MS titles. It really pisses me off to no end that they are catering to the console crowd who don't have a brain in their head to tackle anything even remotely challenging.I am sure true IFR flight will be stripped away now.No ILS approcahes or anything else. What a joke.
The only thing going for it is the graphics and optimization to run smoothly at max settings but graphics are not going to make this shine. The sim crowd wants realism first and eye candy second.Apparently MS doesn't care about that anymore.I don't care for having to hook up to Windows live to.I don't care about stupid online stats and what not.I guess its off to X-plane now for any realistic civil aviation sims.

There will probably be extensive mods later on that will turn it into a sim.

There's at least one in there so I'm guessing more as well. From the "known issues" section
Quote: | Users may experience a stutter at the end of a Mission or when switching aircraft in the Hangar, and within the Kayaker Search and Rescue Mission, the game may hang or stall when reaching the mid-point along the coast. |

That one looks fun, but what I meant was emergency situations with your plane.
Severe weather, something goes wrong in the plane, engine fails, difficult landing etc
I guess IMO flying a plane in FSX can be done by a 10 year old kid especially when you have autopilot. The interesting and fun part comes when there is bad weather, equipment failure or having to land a large plane.
In general I enjoy flying in FSX, but its just so much better when you have to worry that something might go wrong, the landing is going to be difficult in this weather etc

Ahh, equipment failures. Yeah, that would be nice.
Well, helicopters and jets will definitely be some of the content down the road. There are references in some of the aerocache challenges that say you'll need a helicopter to find them. Another aerocache challenge is called "curvature of the earth" and the hint is "altitude flown by the SR-71 blackbird july 27-28, 1976. currently hidden over the largest airport in hawaii" So definitely some fast and high aircraft will be available.
The flight model of that Icon feels "off" though. It feels like an arcade racing model slapped onto an airplane. Way too twitchy. I highly doubt the real aircraft will be that sensitive when production models are delivered. That makes me wonder about the rest of the flight models as well.
It's fun(ish) but in no way is it a sim yet. Hopefully it will improve but with a release date in the spring and it being in beta now, it's likely feature complete and only content and bug fixing is being worked on at this point.

This crap is a sick joke when compared to FSX.I will not be shevling FSX for it.I can't believe that MS hacked out everything that they did after years of being the leader in the civil aviation sim market. What a disgrace.

You need a quite powerful system to get it running smoothly with any kind of visual quality. It takes quite a few hours of tinkering and experimenting to get it running how you like it.
Download and try the demo, it's exactly the same as the full retail, except time limit and limited scenery.
I can't give an answer if it's worth it. i like FSX but never really got into xplane.. time will tell and remember xp10 is still beta.

Pretty sure there used to be an Aerofly game that was used for RC training much like Real Flight. Wonder if it is adapted from that.

Yes i have it, it's called Aerofly 5. it's purely a RC sim.
After watching the video's it's plain to see that it is adapted from af5. even the gui weather ect looks identical. There are also a handful of full scale models in af5 which look to behave pretty much like the simulator version. The crashes are identical also.
Not saying this is a bad thing, it looks like quite a good attempt, but i wonder how far they are going to take this. it is missing alot of things that it needs to be called a (simulator) imo.
