Seems accurate.

(Above this one is the Creation Kit.)

(Cache size also states 3128 MB which normally is the file size, seems to be quite complete if so, would be nice.)

Official HD pack would be nice indeed. Lets see if Bethesda's programmers are better at creating textures than simple modders Cool Face

I believe textures are created at high resolution and then scaled down to fit consoles. So now they just release the original ones I guess.

Hah Hi-res pack was the first thing that crossed my mind when I watched that CK video. But I thought that was too good to be true.

If it is true, then kudos to Bethesda. And also a fuck you for not including it in the first place.

If they really release an HR pack, I vow to pre-order their next game without reading a single preview. Bethesda almost completely redeemed their Oblivion fuck up with this game.

Would be nice if the hypothetical high-res pack also included some DX11 stuff.

Why exactly is the resolution tied to the draw distance anyway, it doesn't make any sense to me unless they combined the shadows and LOD shadows and had it scale depending on distance, which seems wrong as the higher your settings (Thus the longer draw distance of shadows.) the more blurred they appear although this is countered by the relatively high resolution used even on unmodified settings (2048) and the default settings also don't scale shadows that far away from you.

You can negate it partially by using 8192 resolution shadows and a 8x edge filter or what it was called (Which is pretty insane but still not enough to completely fix it.) but indoor performance will hover around single digit framerates and outdoors might hang the game entirely in larger scenes. Razz

Still any shadows is a improvement over the earlier titles from Morrowind with it's pre-modeled shadows and only for characters (Could be disabled in favor of dynamic shadows but that even sends todays high-end hardware down to low-teens framerate values.) or Oblivion with it's faked tree and grass shadows but compared to Morrowind much improved character shadows.
(With horrible self-shadowing and extreme blur though.)

Ofcourse only some entities cast and receive shadows due to performance concerns and without ini tweaks land and tree self shadowing is disabled and the resolution is as stated pretty poor (Not that much can be done unless you use a rather low value of say 500 unit shadow draw distance which means a lot of pop-in instead.) and of course there's still a lot of fake vertex coloring instead of real shadows (Such as on many items to fake SSAO without using any actual ambient occlusion shader effect.) to name some examples.
(And then there's the HDR and lighting shader which could also be improved, especially the eye adaption effect from what I've been reading, and as is easily seen ingame.)

Anyway, I wonder how Creation 2.0 (Or what they'll call it.) will be, I guess it will account for the next-gen systems like WiiU and X720 or what it'll be (With it's low-end AMD 6300 series GPU or what that was about, still with proper optimizations it'll do but it's still funny.) hopefully that will allow the game engine to see some interesting advancements both in visual and gameplay perspective.

Skyrim uses shadow mapping, which renders the entire scene from the lights perspective into a shadow map (basically a texture of a certain size). That texture is then projected onto the map. So the larger the draw distance the larger the area that needs to fit into the shadow map. This means less pixels per object, therefore lower quality.

Most modern engines use cascading shadow maps, which use multiple shadow maps of different resolutions so that independent of draw distance you are guaranteed high quality shadows near your character. I think skyrim uses them too, but to some lower extent - or they're just really poorly implemented.

They should have gone with shadow volumes but I guess it would have brought the consoles to their knees.

Meh... I remember the Morrowind and Oblivion "experiences": 3 hours of searching, installing and testing mods followed by only 15 mins of actual playing.

I started tweaking and modding Morrowind 2+ years ago, i still havent started playing it. I've noticed this behavior with almost every new PC game that i naively think i'm gonna start playing and enjoy the heck out of. Well at least I'm glad i have my ipad, cause i have no idea how to mod those games (which forces me to actually _play_ them) Laughing
