You know how your men step out of the cover to shot? Maybe you can imagine that happening more than on your turn? You know like in a firefight...

I am not talking about standing at the edge of a wall and taking cover there.
There are buggy spots where you You are completely separated from an enemy by a wall that neither you or him are taking cover behind and it should completely block LOS but they can stilll see and attack you through it. Goes both ways too.
The problem is that you move to a seemingly safe position and then get your head blown off

Ok fair enough, never tried that my self - maybe that alien had squad sight Smile

Heh ! Nice point here.
One of my sniper (with squad sight perk) just did a "through building's wall" reflex shot on an alien.
My sniper was outside and the wall was closed, no windows only one door but closed, the alien was inside so my sniper didn't have a line of sight but some of my others team mates had.
Still, it seems this doesn't happen every time...

Hopefully further patches are on the way.

Lost 2 countries now ....

Quite painful watching your main squad getting wiped! LOL Very Happy

Ah well.

Is online like saveable matches? Or are they just kinda skirmish matches which you have to complete in one big sitting?

SOrry for all the questions.

One sitting - but the matches are quite quick - 120 seconds each turn and like 10-20 turns a match. And its fun!

^^ Yeah it stings. I hate those rookies, myself. Relatively early on, I had my top guy right next to a rookie and he goes into a panic. And what does he do? Instead of shooting the aliens, he decides to shoot my uber sniper in the face. lol wut

I am kind of stupid, in a crash site mission, a put one of my sexy colonel sniper behind an ufo ship generator.
3 mutons came and engaged, one of them was in LOS of my sniper, I fucking realized it wasn't a good idea to stay behind this generator thingy ... but I thought she will not miss him, so I stayed and shot at him.

She missed...

Yep. Found the best way is to build 1 in the first month - place it on any country that is red 1 day before Council Report. Build 3 in the second, plus a Satelite Uplink (make sure you have a workshop + power plant ahead of time.) and again, wait until the end of the month to place them on red countries.

Money is tight obviously, so this does mean really skimping on any other base facilities, med kits etc even selling flight computer/power source. But, it makes things a lot more comfortable in the long run and means a much bigger income later in the game.

Also very important, when taking Abduction missions, don't just look at the country that will be affected by you not helping it, but the continent (+2 panic for country you don't help, +1 for all others on that continent.) - always go for the mission that results in the least red countries.

Oh and hold off doing the Alien Base mission, it's a great panic reducer to save for when you reach the end of a month without enough satelites to save red countries.

So very true.

I'm playing soft ironman mode. No actual iron mode turned on, but I'm not loading when anything goes wrong. I've lost complete elite crews couple of times and didn't load the game, then this thing happens to me:

It was one of those Very Important Council find and rescue an npc mission. Easy level by the look of it, I pick the npc, leave one of my rookies behind because I was afraid of some flank attack, and I move with the rest of the team slowly back to evacuation point. I'm killing some aliens, everything is going without problems. Then on the turn that npc could get to evac point, two Tallmen start attacking my rookie. He has hight advantage, laser rifle, extra armour and heck, hes a rookie. So I leave npc and my main squad before evac point and do that little battle. In best scenario, he gets promoted in worst I loose a rookie, no big deal.

I miss 70% shot with rookie, first Tallmen destroys my cover, second one kills that rookie. Then the shit hits the fan! One of my soldiers, a heavy way back at extraction point, panicked turned around and emptied his whole arsenal into that very important npc killing him on the spot. Mission failed. Rage. Despair. The game is pure rage bait
Between this and PES on pro, I've not swore or wanted to break things so much in many years

Once I finally got past the fact it's best to pretend the original game never existed I was actually enjoying myself on original difficulty

Then of course it hits the fan, facing 2 floaters, kill one, it's all good, the remaining floater triggers 3 mutons (my first sight of them but I knew I was in the shit),
I remove my guy from their range, which triggers 3 more floaters from very far away, who trigger another 2 floaters, suddenly it's went from 1 alien to 9 and it's their move, fuck me Sad

That was just the latest in a long list of bad situations
I earlier decided that I'm saving at the start of a mission so I don't get screwed by a cheap ai every single time, it may be like cheating but it's better than my head exploding
Anyway, I noticed that the predetermined rolls aren't as fixed as they say

Same mission as above, 2 mutons, 4 floaters, one floater above and fairly close, 5 of my soldiers available to shoot, 6 actual shots at the floater, every single one a miss Evil or Very Mad
reload
sniper shoots muton, soldier shoots the aforementioned floater with rapid fire and kills it, hmmm, it all goes horribly wrong Sad
reload
rapid fire at floater = miss, sniper shoots at muton = miss Confused
reloadx3
kill lots of aliens, including the floater Very Happy
Turns out that all you have to do to change your real % is change your firing order, I found it interesting at least

Other quality moments from that mission include, missing a 99% shot and my many 1% chances to hit translating to the ai hitting me for a crit 90% of the time, nice

I got past all that, got some lovely new carapace armour that supposedly helps with plasma damage, no it fucking does not, three hits from mutons, two of them crits for 9 and one for 7
I was taking less damage with normal armour
People started to die, 6 floaters had joined in and I remembered that I hadn't saved for over an hour

Rage

Fuck this game
I'll play again tomorrow Razz

Yeah as has been said before, the percentages shown are not "real", in as much as if the RNG says the first shot that turn will miss, it will miss regardless of whether the UI tells you the chance to hit is 1% or 100%. So if you are reloading, you need to change up the order of firing to have any effect.

Well, I did some modding. Posted one up on the Nexus to make the game a bit easier. Not much interest of course, everyone is more interested in making it harder for some reason.

I don't mind the beginning parts but when Muton Elites and Heavy Floaters start rolling out of those UFOs, it gets a bit too much for my squad, even with the best tech.

Ya sure 99.6% can still miss...I would like if it said certain hit if your above 100%. I run and gun with my assaults alot to shotgun faces of aliens - and if it misses, then its bye bye.

Ok? On what level is that a problem? If you are going from normal to classic, use alot more explosives to soften them or there cover up.

This isn't new. Many games have used a predetermined seed for random rolls. Civ5 is one example. It's still random, only it's all rolled beforehand basically.

Is there such a thing as the opposite of Murphy's Law? Sometimes the gods smile down upon you: just before assaulting the base I launched 2 satellites, and right after the assault I got a request from the US asking for 9 light plasma's. Payday would happen 2 days after and together with the money I got from assaulkting the base and selling the non-researchable stuff I could make those 9 rifles (costed me about 900 credits) for a reward of 2300 credits.

It's like someone flipped the easy switch... almost all Officer Training done, a lot of foundry stuff in the works, an order for a firestorm and more than enough spare to afford the psy-testing area and the Hyperwave Relay. The only issue is I ran out of alloys Smile

Oh and I can really recommend that once you stabilize the world a bit, to go with the South American satellite bonus ASAP. I saved up all my autopsies and interrogations (only did sectoid and thin man), and ran them out all at once, whcih saves time on it's own, but then you also have quick access to the reduced armor and plasma researchtime.

indeed, this game is all about satellites and money, considering restarting my game, as i have hard time dealing with all ufos flying around, not enough money to equip crew, not to mention build ships or equip them ;/, if only i focused on money and satelites early instead of reseach and engineers which will come with time anyway

Ahhh, I see! Thanks JB Smile That makes it a little TOO easy for me, though I do like the idea of having more UFOs flying around as it's supposed to be an INVASION! Only seeing 1 UFO every 20-30 days is hardly what I'd call an "invasion" Very Happy
