Just make the damn game. What's the point of a "rivalry" between dead genre A and comatose genre B?

Where can I see how much of the game's been funded? I could a few days ago, but the main site's been a bit reorganized in the mean time, and now I don't see where the figures used to be displayed.

The main sites are down. Currently only simple backup pages work. They have to do stuff manually atm.

It's all back online now Smile

Quote:

What a long, strange trip it has been! I'm very pleased to announce that the Roberts Space Industries website is coming back online as originally intended. Thanks to the heroic efforts of our web team, you can now pledge as originally intended as well as access your account information and view the real time pledge counter.
More changes are coming, too: we're in the process of setting up the more robust forum you deserve; a search feature, PMs and everything else you have asked for will be available soon. Additional payment options and the ability to add to your existing pledges (against all odds, you demanded it!) will be online in the coming days.
It's not all going to be apologetic letters and 'back to normal' updates, either. Now that we're not "all hands on deck" dealing with the site outage you will see the Comm-Link and other familiar sections return to life. Expect more polls, in-depth ship descriptions, news from the world of Star Citizen and more Q&A with Chris Roberts! Ask him about physics! (On second thought, maybe you shouldn't, we'll be here all day…) We're also putting the finishing touches on the maps and the Galactapedia.
And one last thing: your Golden Tickets WILL RETURN. We had to put them away while we fixed the site, but you'll find them waiting for you in your accounts in the coming days.
I'd like to thank you all, personally: you space pilots have proven yourselves to be the most thoughtful, helpful and incredibly patient group I have ever had the pleasure of working with. I feel terrible that the web issues have impacted such a great group. We're going to do everything we can to justify your treatment of our endeavor. It's going to be cool!

They've managed to raise $654,954 from 6,782 supporters. 32.75% of the way to their goal! I really, really hope they manage it Smile It's killing me to read that site though, seeing all the wonderful plans and ideas laid out, then seeing that - to get the best of it - they need to raise $5m ... and I just know in my heart that it won't happen Sad We've all been waiting for the next Freelancer or Wing Commander and here comes the CREATOR offering us that very chance............... and I'm worried it's going to end up failing. Oh sure he may hit the $2m, so the "game" will be made, but falling so short of those stretch goals is only going to negatively impact it Sad

There's a standard timer (currently sitting at 26 days to go) but, unlike Kickstarter, there's no "all or nothing" scenario. The devs said that if they DON'T hit their targets, people can have refunds if they like - otherwise the devs will simply put the money towards development whilst taking on other fundraisers. So, given enough time and without people withdrawing, this could easily be funded *eventually*

I just really hope the $4/5m stretch goals end up passing too.

Didnt roberts say something like he has investors already, and the crowdfunding is just on top of that? Meaning the games will be made either way.

thanks, seems they added timer and money raised so far, seems they are doing almost like Shadowrun, which ended 1.9M(with paypal),but they have few more days(Shadowrun had bit less then 26 from start to finish),I assume it will end with around 2M-2.2M(unless things will sped up)

No the crowd funding is to make a point to the investors that there is a market out there big enough for it to be worthwhile business. I think he said they need about 4mil, so if people pledge 4mil, then the private investors will invest in it thus the project will be possible. If they don't reach it, depending on the margin I would think, investors can pull out.

Yeah, "Angel" funding. Investors that will back the project when it shows that people are interested, so $2m isn't even what it would cost to make the game - just what it would take as a starting point for these "investors" to commit. I really do hope they hit the $4 and 5m goals though.

I don't think it will be easy even to reach those 2m. I hope to be wrong.

A couple of months ago I've heard some rumours that David Braben was also interested in crowd funding for Elite IV. But unfortunately everything related with Elite IV is always a rumour. That would be the only project that I can think of, in which I would pledge more than the basic stretch. It could ruin me. Shocked

I'll tell my friends about this but sadly I don't know many people that appreciate these kinds of games. I can only hope that enough people start advertising on facebook and the like so the game will get made...

This project is absolutely glorious both in scope and scale, very AAA-like..let's hope it's not "too much to hande" for simple crowdfunding. There are many days left though, so crossed fingers Razz

Firstly; thanks to whoever changed the title Smile That makes it easier for everyone

Secondly; http://www.theverge.com/gaming/2012/10/16/3510918/star-citizen-developers-cloud-imperium-considering-kickstarter

Good! So far they've raised near $832k and the original plan was to do it solo, no Kickstarter or anything, but considering there's only 21 days left and RSI would REALLY like to hit the $4/5m? They've taken to asking the fanbase whether they should open a Kickstarter too.

I SAY YES! Honestly, I reckon it should be on RSI, Kickstarter *and* IndieGogo. As many non-moneysuckingIPstealingscum avenues of raising money as possible!

I´m of the mindset that whatever they need to do to get the funds for this, JUST DO IT! Smile

I might even upgrade my pledge when they implement it.

And Kickstarter it is! Very Happy

Quote:

I have a rather big announcement to make today. We asked the community and they spoke! We now have Kickstarter as an additional option to pledge!

There's a more detailed letter on the www.robertsspaceindustries.com site but here's a fun little video from me

You can back the project now at http://www.kickstarter.com/projects/cig/star-citizen

PCG gets in on the action too; http://www.pcgamer.com/2012/10/18/star-citizen-kickstarter/

I find this funny, now kickstarter seems to be the "paypal" edition,I don't know if they can reach 500k there, but if they can,and even surpassed it,they can actually do 3-4M combine with both sites

From what they're talking about, no.. it won't be another EVE or X, rather it's more like Privateer/Wing Commander and Starlancer/Freelancer.

Well seeing as they're already at 1 million on their own site, and the kickstarter went from 16000 to 22000 in 5 minutes, I do believe they'll make the 2 million at least. Although I don't think they'll get past 3 million much, if they even get there.
