More Witcher 3 details - 50 hours long, features climbing, Fallout-style combat and boats

OXM wrote:

- The world has 36 final states three possible epilogues (each one hour long)

- You can import your save game to determine which characters appear and how they act towards Geralt, but the backstory won't be affected.

- You can buy horses or tame a wild ones by using Axii, one of The Witcher's spells.

- Geralt can now jump and climb things.

- You can hunt wild animals for their fur, claws and so forth by tracking down colour-coded traces in the world itself.

- The main storyline is 50 hours long.

- Towns are more reactive - citizens will summon the guards if they catch you thieving, and will observe daily routines.

- There's a new combat mechanic that's comparable to VATS in Fallout 3, letting you target different parts of your quarry in slow motion.

- There are no more QTEs. Hurrah!

- Geralt can level up to 60.

- The console versions have their own, bespoke UIs.

- You gain experience points only by completing quests, but hunting will earn you money and crafting materials.

Well atleast they're constantly trying to change their combat since everytime people seem to hate what they did ("too repetitive", "too easy"). I liked the combat in both games, the first for its presentation and the second for its actual combat, so I don't know what to think about this VATS thing. It takes balls to change anything in an already established IP these days.

Confused

I'm assuming that this VATS combat mechanic is complementing a TW2-like combat, not replacing it.
Need more details...

They mentioned that they want you to use your knowledge of the monsters in actual fights, like if a certain creature has two hearts and you know about it, you can "aim" your sword at the heart(s). They were not sure if they wanted to do a QTE or a slow-motion aiming thing, I suppose they want for the latter a'la VATS.

Would be nice, like hunting animals just like that, after a while, get some knowledge about them, and after that while you try to fight again, knowing his weak spots, in some VATS'like thing, slow-mo hitting the monster in that specific places. If it's done well, fuck me sounds great.

Also, storyline 50h long? Dudeeee lot of shits to do in this game Very Happy

And I strongly hope this only includes the main quests. Let's add another 50 hours when the side quests step in. Me Gusta

You don't know? The Witcher 3 has turn-based, isometric combat like in Fallout 1/2.

I have no idea how they'll implement that system so I don't mind that. My reaction in my previous post (if it's what you're getting at) is VATS itself. I absolutely hated that thing in the Fallout games. It was just so stupid and out of place. I'm not saying CDPR can't do it right though.

Holy jeebus, this sounds glorious. More mobility, better AI, deeper combat, no more QTEs (*evil grin*)..in a huge world full of stuff to do/interesting characters to talk to and with CDProjekt's usual attention to details.

I think this has to do with earlier info about Geralt learning monster weaknesses and then targeting the vulnerable areas (such as stabbing two hearts at the same time, or disabling a venom gland).

Dear lord So Much Win

I think that these guys have the absolute best combination out there of art design and assets quality by a country mile.
And that was with The Witcher 2 already.

Indeed Razz

I believe that these images are still rendered using the old engine, which makes the do_want level raise even more (although I think that the final result won't change much, since it's already amazing).

Its a good thing they took a totally different approach than Witcher2, which ofc, wasnt even close to how good Witcher 1 was. Judging from screenshots i would say development of game is moving pretty fast. Maybe we can even have december (holidays) release?

The only thing this game misses (and every other RPG I guess) is a big living town. That dwarven town in Witcher 2 was so dead Sad I really hope these guys will be the first ones to overcome that major hurdle.

RPS: What about unfriendly NPCs? Will they just be of the “Grrr, arrghh, murder, kill, whoops I died, oh god I’ll never get to play violin again” variety? Or will there be a bit more to them?

Michał Platkow-Gilewski: While you’re fighting with enemies, human enemies, they have a morale system. If you’re strong enough and they feel like they’re losing – like if they outnumbered you at the beginning, but now there’s only one of them still alive – they’ll start to go on defense. They’ll be afraid of your swings. Then, ultimately, they’ll surrender. When they surrender, you can either finish them or leave them alive. You can take their loot any time you want.

RPS: When people surrender, depending on whether or not you let them go or kill them, how big are the ramifications later in the game? Is it just a moment-to-moment thing as far as how the player feels, or will it affect them in some major way later on?

Michał Platkow-Gilewski: It depends on the situation, of course. If it’s an important moment in the storyline, it will have significant influence on everything. You saw situations like that in The Witcher 2 already, just in the prologue.

Jakub Rokosz: That’s also one of the situations we told you about where not doing something matters.

Michał Platkow-Gilewski: Yeah. If you’re just fighting small-time bandits somewhere in the deep woods, maybe it will have no influence on the world. But maybe something will happen. We’ll see. Those bandits might do something later on. Maybe they’ll kill a shepherd.

Jakub Rokosz: Or join up with his friends and have another ambush for you.

I scrolled too quickly and only read the last sentence of that interview, and I thought they were talking about online multiplayer.
