Sounds good on paper, still can't quite ignore the downsides at the moment, but I'll be more than happy to revise my opinion once I play it tonight Only 7 hours to go

For now, they will yes. All content will be interchangeable as long as they use the same tilesets - which, of course, they will since no others exist yet. The same will apply to the Berlin campaign which is also coming to DRM-free owners. Once that's gone though, yeah, it's not looking fun Really unfair HBS to not disclose their MS involvement from the start, their Kickstarter made it sound like they had ACQUIRED the rights, not LICENSED them, from Microsoft.
Hopefully something can be worked out to everyone's benefit but even if it can't, you do still at least have the Steam copy.

Uh, I just hopped on GOG to see if you can already purchase it but... it's not available on GOG and apparently it never will be? Then where else can you buy a DRM free copy?
I didn't back the KS and Steam is out of the question.

Oh! Sorry, I thought you were already a backer. I have some bad news for you then... you can't. DRM-free version isn't being sold since MS won't allow it, they only allow DRM-free copies of the game and the stretch-goal Berlin campaign to be given to backers as part of the tier rewards, not being commercially sold.

There was a summary of sorts partway through.
Quote: |
I can report that:
a) It’s not particularly long, I got through it in about 12 hours, without rushing too much. This, I suspect, is the thing that will disappoint most. But get to the end of the review, because their is light at the end of the shadow.
b) The writing (there’s no voice acting) ranges from schlocky to completely superb, with the overall story feel a bit too like a generic Shadowrun campaign, but maybe that’s the point. It’s great fun, is the point. You will enjoy it.
c) The big baddy creatures were just dreadful. Shadowrun is a game that basically allows anything to happen in it, and we can do better than this. Much better. I mean, they worked, but the drama was lacking. “Oh. This.”
d) It looks right, throughout. As isometric cyberpunk worlds go, this one is spot on. The rain-sopped streets with crowds of people holding umbrellas, the corporate meeting rooms and dank basements. The animation and detail are a bit lacking, but it felt incredible authentic somehow, particular your “base” area for much of the game. Great stuff.

I see they fixed(scaled down) the massive shItpad UI. Good. Now if they stop being fucking lazy and just fix the broken "saving" system, I'll buy it immediately.
sabin1981 wrote: | DRM-free version isn't being sold since MS won't allow it |
Wait... what? I mean, they're obviously mildly retarded considering it doesn't have a saving system besides some shitty 1998 era console crap, but why would they care about what M$ thinks? Sounds like a really bad excuse from them.
4treyu wrote: | I don't really mind that, and if it helps the allegedly excellent narrative, less so. |
How would it "help the narrative" in any way? Going through the same area, text and quests over again just because the check pointing is horrible does the opposite.

Microsoft holds the Shadowrun license for games I believe, if these guys started going against the terms and such agreed upon it would probably be easy for Microsoft to strip them of it or what it's called.
(Because if what Sabin said above is correct then they did license it from Microsoft.)

Ah, I thought it was Origin related or something. That's a shame, then.

Yeah, that's exactly it JB. Microsoft still owns the license to Shadowrun and HBS had to sub-license it from them but, sadly, that came with some caveats which have REALLY pissed off a lot of people -- such as two glaring faults;
1. HBS cannot sell the DRM-free copy, it's only available to those that backed the Kickstarter.
2. While the DRM-free copy comes with the Berlin campaign support, once it ships, that's the end of the availability. All subsequent DLC/addons must be released via the Steam platform.

But backers do get both a GoG and Steam key right?
(So you can just switch to Steam at no extra cost albeit you do have to use their client and the initial Steam online activation.)

Backers get both a DRM-free download and a Steam key, yes, but as far as I know the DRM-free download is direct from HBS themselves.

Doesn't make any sense in a cyberpunk setting about mercenaries. Meh, let's just hope the reviewer got it wrong..

Anyone mentioned yet how do magic users fare in this game? I prefer playing as a mage and I hope magic in this game does bring something to the table apart from buffs.

You can roll a Mage or Shaman and be a damage dealer just fine, though some of the reviews imply that the game is focused more along the melee path than magic.

The game delivers based on the reviews. Not a new classic, but solid.
Bought it a bit reluctantly though, 12 hour campaign is a shame.
It should not be that hard to make a 30-40 hour campaign with the tools they made, 2d engine, no voiceovers etc. Also, turnbased combat takes a while, so the content seems to be very limited.
The only reason the did this i can think of is to milk the game with dlc,I can't think of another reason.
