Are you kidding me ? Carmack is brilliant and megatexture was the best thing about Rage.
It was the first game where you didn't see patterned textures all over and it made it look really good.
I mean the game itself sucked and the bugs were really bad but I'm not sure that's all Carmacks fault given how the game was rushed and he is just the lead-programmer of a considerably large team.
It's the board-members and higher ups that decide where games go nowadays anyways, Carmack has to work with what he gets.
No surprise he decided to spend more time on the Oculus.
But don't question the guy. He is a genius.

it gets a lot of shit, but i thought it was a good concept.. i mean i loved seeing the world look seamless, giving the artists the freedom to just paint the landscape freely...
in the execution though... a wee bit of a failure.

Il never get all the hate for rage, I loved it, but it does have one of the worst obviously rushed ending in a while, but come on the gameplay was silky smooth and the guns were awesome

agreed. Fantastic game. as well as quake4 and doom3 (one of my fav games ever)
Also had no problems with rage. In fact - it was running buttery 60fps on my 8800gt, when guys with high end machines had trouble

I guess you missed my glowing posts regarding the Rift? Or maybe I was using the Oculus Rift for so many hours that I forgot to post about it, heh.

Carmack didn't do anything good and/or meaningful since Doom 3. And even tho, i put a big asterisk near it.

Carmack was stuck in the gears at ID with no apparent "results" to show to the public.
I think he will be a great ressource for the Oculus team because he can pour fresh ideas into a fresh project without the corporate shackles he's currently bound by.
He is a clever guy and his official involvement alone pushes the Rift up a plenty notches on the awareness/hype scale and his 20 year experience in the gaming industry is invaluable for a young company such as oculus.

Im all for it, But to throw $300 at something that I will have to throw $300 more at later to get the good final version of...not so much.
The day its retail I will be one of the ones picking one up, even if it ends up being my sons from me not liking it/bored of it in a few months.
But Im not spending money on a prototype, unless me being an early funder means I get the final for free, or at a HUGE discount, in return for it.
I mean for example I'm all for videocard advancement too, but if AMD/nvidia went "get an early release of the nextgen card!..its the same price as the final one, but 1/2 the power, one output head..and draws the same wattage, BUT you can get it early! and then buy the real one when it comes out in a year"...No ill wait for the real one
