Are you kidding me ? Carmack is brilliant and megatexture was the best thing about Rage.

It was the first game where you didn't see patterned textures all over and it made it look really good.

I mean the game itself sucked and the bugs were really bad but I'm not sure that's all Carmacks fault given how the game was rushed and he is just the lead-programmer of a considerably large team.

It's the board-members and higher ups that decide where games go nowadays anyways, Carmack has to work with what he gets.

No surprise he decided to spend more time on the Oculus.

But don't question the guy. He is a genius.

it gets a lot of shit, but i thought it was a good concept.. i mean i loved seeing the world look seamless, giving the artists the freedom to just paint the landscape freely...

in the execution though... a wee bit of a failure.

The downside was that MT was being used for everything.. and as you could tell by looking at interiors, that simply wasn't good enough. MT should have been used for world geometry detail and vista/etc, with standard texturing being used for "clutter" such as desks and old junk on them. You had these amazing looking vistas (when the textures loaded Laughing) and then... well... this...;

Just... meh. Then of course the lack of dynamic lighting, with everything being prebaked. It was an interesting idea but didn't really work and just ended up hurting the game more than benefiting it. Gameplay wise? Friggin' awesome, I'll fight that point tooth and claw, every single day! RAGE *played* amazingly, it felt like a return to classic-style FPS gameplay and the gunplay was sublime, it was just a shame it was too short with too many invisible walls and not enough real content.

Which do you recommend? Are you using tridef?

I just started with tridef and Borderlands 2 and Portal work excellent using those drivers, also HL2 ep1/ep2 - very cool!

I had a decent time playing deus ex also with tridef. I think im gonna just go and purchase the full version, im still on trial ...

For the others, the devkit is $300 ... cmon, thats like skipping dinner out one weekend and there you go. At least where I live Wink

bxrd,

What about motion sickness, blurry vision, headaches, mental confusion and social isolation? All that for $300 bucks? Razz

Other than the obvious social isolation, I have no problems with the sickness, headache etc at all!

blurry vision depends from game to game, close quarters like portal work extremely well ...

funny think about isolation, I always tell my wife to be careful how she tries to contact me as I can get scared to death when inside ... especially while playing a horror game Wink

I don't how filthy rich you are but a "dinner out" that costs $300 is ludicrous. What on Earth do you eat? Fresh caviar off the buttocks of a Page 3 supermodel? Or are you paying for a dinner for the New Zealand All Blacks? $300 is not a cost most sane people can just piss into the wind and say "Hoh hoh hoh chortle, that's one less meal this weekend! Hoh hoh hoh" Laughing

Telling people to go out and spend $300 on a low-end devkit, rather than the sensible path of waiting for the full consumer model, or else they're "not into forward-pushing technology" is just........... Facepalm

agreed. Fantastic game. as well as quake4 and doom3 (one of my fav games ever)
Also had no problems with rage. In fact - it was running buttery 60fps on my 8800gt, when guys with high end machines had trouble

Haha! that's because the game is designed for 60fps, silly! Unless you have a ludicrously underpowered system, it will always run at 60fps because it's designed to - it would just simply downgrade visual quality automatically until 60fps is achieved Smile Nobody had "performance" issues with the game at launch, they had texture streaming issues Smile

True. Console version would drop resolution first Laughing
But to say the truth - If we would HAVE to choose, I would prefer 30fps doom4 but with fully dynamic lighting and maybe environements. As great as Rage looked, it was static and required 60fps becaues of how fast paced it is

It's a shame id and ZeniMax dumped RAGE like a bad smell the moment it was out the door (took over a YEAR before "The Scorchers" came out.. Facepalm) as it's highly unlikely we'll get Rift support for it now.

I guess you missed my glowing posts regarding the Rift? Or maybe I was using the Oculus Rift for so many hours that I forgot to post about it, heh.

Well, you heard the man. You can't see nor hear anybody outside. You're in the Oculus Matrix, and thus detached from the society! Cool Face

Carmack was stuck in the gears at ID with no apparent "results" to show to the public.

I think he will be a great ressource for the Oculus team because he can pour fresh ideas into a fresh project without the corporate shackles he's currently bound by.

He is a clever guy and his official involvement alone pushes the Rift up a plenty notches on the awareness/hype scale and his 20 year experience in the gaming industry is invaluable for a young company such as oculus.

Im all for it, But to throw $300 at something that I will have to throw $300 more at later to get the good final version of...not so much.

The day its retail I will be one of the ones picking one up, even if it ends up being my sons from me not liking it/bored of it in a few months.
But Im not spending money on a prototype, unless me being an early funder means I get the final for free, or at a HUGE discount, in return for it.

I mean for example I'm all for videocard advancement too, but if AMD/nvidia went "get an early release of the nextgen card!..its the same price as the final one, but 1/2 the power, one output head..and draws the same wattage, BUT you can get it early! and then buy the real one when it comes out in a year"...No ill wait for the real one Smile
