It won't work that way - the same message you're talking about stated, that you can play with people on the same playthrough AND same bonfire level. I think it's not possible to join someone's game if he used the ascetic and you didn't

To upgrade your weapon to +9 or +10 but you have to get your weapon to +8/+9 first.

I dropped down there, but this only brought me to the Grave of Saints and people summon me as gray spirit all the time. Do I have to proceed through that area? Nothing else left?!

There's a different entrance in the pit, there's an entrance to both grave of saints and the gutter in the pit.
edit: doesn't the door in the shaded woods needs him to have the 4 great souls?
and isn't one of them is in black gulch which is accessible from the gutter?

To reach the gutter, you need to finish the Grave of trolls by killing the Spoiler: | The Royal Rat Vanguard | Also if u finished the mines and spoke to the irish sounding npc, he can drop a ladder to you to reach the grave of trolls easier.

Hmmmm so just fought Guardian Dragon in Aldia's Keep (one try more than enough). It was virtually effortless. Easiest boss in the whole game?

i did not have to do that, he just needs to find the other entrance in the pit which leads him over to the exploding guys trap, going to RRV is gonna make him end up way higher which is dangerous.

Magus was so easy, I didn't even realize that it was a proper fight Just went in and killed the big guys first and then just punched the zombies

Finished it (the story at least). Loved it and enjoyed like few games nowadays. It wasn't as good as DS1, but nearly just as atmospheric with some good changes and other not so much. The bosses in general might be the biggest weakness compared to DS1, even though Looking Glass Knight was one of the most epic boss fights I've ever played
Anyway, this game is GOTY so far for me, I reckon only GTA V might dethrone it (if released this year ), otherwise this game doesn't break a sweat outclassing all that crap that is released every month. Now, I'd like to play NG+ and will certainly do more CO-OP, but maybe not immediately. This game is gonna stay installed a long time on my not so big HDD (unless I upgrade later this year that is ).

Wut Covetus Demon, Magus Congregation? |
Magus congregation was a boss?
For some reason Covetus fat fuck took me 2 tries, so yeah, the lame guardian dragon was definitely the easiest for me (same as his stupid brothers in Dragon Eyrie) xD I'm thinking of using some bonfire ascetics in that area for some TT farming.

Online and PVP is very good and enjoyable in Dark Souls 2, it felt NEVER bad until now and the mechanics implemented are really good. The invasions are really not a problem.
F.e. against the bell gargoyles, the bonfire is like 15 seconds away and you can always burn a human effigy or go offline so that you don't get invaded (you might run into a red phantom, but only on top of the tower, not in the two rooms before the boss gate, so this won't even affect you at all!). And if you get invaded, the invaders can't refill their health but you can. My tip -> Mind your poise in PVP! You don't want to get stunned AT ANY time. And I never got invaded outside of the invasion areas (bellfry luna/bellfry sol, doors of pharros and at the rat sewers below majula). Quite contrary, before every boss and next to almost all bonfires, you'll find sunlight bros or white soap stone signs from players offering assistance So many situations already where another player saved my ass, or I saved his.
Once I was summoned as gray spirit to the bellfry sol and another guy was about to die and from a far I was able to kill the world owner last second. The other invader couldn't see me at that point, ran around the corner and waved his hands to say hello and thanks
It's also great to join as invader in an ongoing fight and you see that both are using only their fists and within seconds you know that you'll just back up and wait for them to finish their duel.
This game has to be experienced now, as long as there are so many online players and I can honestly say that most of them play it fair (except from bastards at doors of pharros, but then again, it's their territory that you are entering and they have a holy mission to accomplish )
Online is really fun, except for the sometimes very bad lag, but imo you can compensate for that with proper movement and timing Of course it sucks that you have to dodge at the very first moment of an enemy attack but I can live with that. Hopefully they will improve in that aspect.
What I liked in Dark Souls more, was that the combat felt heavier. MUCH MUCH heavier. Everything is a bit light and fast now :/ And there is virtually no exploration in Dark Souls 2. Also the interconnection between areas is rather linear. You won't see any proper speed runs or different approaches to the game, unlike Dark Souls, where the level design and world design was much more complex and interesting. Also the enemies were fitting into their environments better than in DS2.
Still currently my GOTY.
Online in Dark Souls was not even half as good as in Dark Souls 2, as you either were the asshole or an asshole invaded you :/

Changing the invasion matchmaking from soul level to soul memory definitely helps to make the invasions more balanced. No more assholes who keep a low soul level throughout the game, grab endgame gear and go invade in early game areas.

Like my SL 29 Pyro with Ascended Pyromancy Flame +5, great combustions and co?
Yeah, invaders did not have any fun with me and I never used a red cracked orb, so I see my slate clean

I visited this little altar and thought it was a very realistic portrait of religion:
I think I'm near the end now, and that makes me a very sad panda. I want more
