I'm talking about build from 2 weeks ago. There were 5 or so patches till today. Maybe something changed also it may be better on higher difficulty settings.

So far my main gripes on Normal difficulty was (played 4 hours got to third enemy type):

- enemies are not in groups on tactical maps, usually single enemy per map segment or too far away to be a real danger;
- the aliens in UFOs are strictly defensive, they won't get out of the UFO, so clearing it looks mostly like that: make firing line that would cover most of ships interior, soldiers should be as far as possible, two designated soldiers for opening and closing the ships main door (in case one dies). Open the door - suppress the enemies with automatic fire, preferably with heavy weapons, with luck some aliens might get hit or die, close the door and end the turn. Rince and repeat.
It works with more complex ships too. On 10 boardings only twice the enemy moved through doors. With luck you can open the door, shoot and close the door before the reaction fire can hit you Smile

Maybe it gets better later but there was an earlier build that I couldn't even flank the aliens if they were in spots with tighter access points, used grenades and had higher accuracy. You really had to think hard and use all your equipment, especially the grenades to win a mission.

Hmm...so unless I'm missing something it's not possible to outfit soldiers unless you remove them from their designated squad first? That's kind of stupid.

Also, I had a guy get mowed down, removed from the UI and all (hell, I contemplated putting his corpse in my backpack) only to have the mission debrief show that, quite miraculously, he clung to life with 1HP and would be right as rain in 33 days! Very Happy

Guess you don't read the update info's. Soldiers have a tiny chance to live when their health drops to 0 during the mission.

To be fair, I didn't think I had a fully updated version, being the yarr release and all.

I've gotten further into it and I'm actually quite enjoying it. VonMisk was right however - every engagement turns into pretty much the same thing - the aliens just crowd in their ship and never bother being aggressive (I'm playing on Veteran difficulty).

I like Xenonauts they took original xcom game play and improve it. I like changes they made. They reduce annoying micro management. Air combat is better but at first it was very confusing, you can click on air battle map to move your units around, there is also locking misses to target and evading... I'ts like improved version of xcom. There is no tutorial and game getting much harder later in game Smile. I like it more then sid meier xcom.

Killed a few aliens (and lost way too many people, quite embarrassing really), but it was worth it. I'm really liking the game so far Razz. Took me some time to re-familiarize with the mechanics, but this X-com definitely has ye olde feel and unforgiveness.

It's deeper than Firaxis' game (here each soldier has ~70 time units for example, and you can basically do what you want with them, there are no restrictions), levels are generally nonlinear, AI is rather aggressive (unless the aliens are inside, in that case they're a bit dumb, like VonMisk mentioned), there's destructible terrain (dat C4), etc

The Global map is nicely designed too, the aerial combat mode is..well it's kicking my ass (at least there's a fair auto-resolve). There's also a big margin of improvement when it comes to future mods, with even better designed maps, and more. So far so good.

"Renaming soldiers after friends and family makes their deaths more tragic / hilarious." Heh. Very Happy

Finished it, easy difficulty however and a lot of time was spent waiting for four days to pass and the monthly council reports so that the aliens would send new ships and upgrade, wish it was a bit more random than it currently is but it might also be influenced by the difficulty level.
(Every fourth day two UFO's appear and as the game goes on it scales up to six UFO's, also aliens upgrade each month so after every council report expect to meet tougher resistance, again I wish it was a bit more randomized but it might be due to the low difficulty I chose to start out with.)

Going to wait for some more patches and possibly more content via mods and then try it on a real difficulty.
(Easy wasn't that easy though as aliens got to the bigger UFO's and sent larger squads but it's likely nothing compared to the actual game difficulty levels.)

EDIT: More alien types would be nice as well, I think I primarily fought four or so types plus of course their "terror" equipment.
(Different ranks though and quite a varied selection of gear.)

Best xcom game in my opinion, although 2k wasn't bad at all. This one is more "hardcore"

Tons of mods that enhances the vanilla game as well or expand on it.

Yes the game is very stable.

There's a new update around the corner, probably after xmas.

I was looking at the videos and theres 1 thing that was a total turn off for me even though the rest of the game looks awesome.

When the soldiers shoot a gun at a slight angle the bullet goes at an angle but they point the gun slightly off. Its a minor thing but really annoying when looking at the fire fights and I like my firefights pretty Smile was I just watching an old build or is it intentional?

It's intentional. Have been heavily "discussed" on their forum Smile

Ha, I just played JA2 for a minute and watched the Xenonauts vid again and know what it is now. The projectile trace starts some distance from the gun and there is now muzzle flash (afaik) so it makes it look really strange, also there are occasions where projectiles keep firing and the soldier already drops the gun to his hip.

Haven't kept up to date with patches for this game but apparently 1.5 is in testing since December 12th as the final major update for the game.

http://steamcommunity.com/games/223830/announcements/detail/141066327082430615

Quote:

V1.5 BRIEF CHANGELOG:

You can load saves from V1.09 in V1.5 (but once saved in V1.5 they will no longer load in V1.09)
Fixes a lot of crashes and loading issues with V1.09
An epilogue from the Chief Scientist has been added to the victory screen
70 community maps bundled with the game as an optional mod
Air combat now has time acceleration buttons
Line-of-sight system for soldiers significantly improved
Cover indicators added to the ground combat
Late-game alien psionics now less unfair
Units behind walls / props are easier to see
Soldiers now get a nationality flag
Money made less tight on easier difficulty settings
LOTS of small usability and stability fixes

The full changelog is significantly longer and will be posted with the final V1.5 release.

The experimental beta branch I'm currently on was actually just updated about twenty minutes ago and so I checked the forums and found the above.

This game is awesome now! It lacks the mood of original UFO/X-COM but on strategy level it's great.
