This has been a long running issue over multiple PCs and it's pissing me off more and more.

I set wallpapers in either PNG, JPG, even BMP format and after a while they will appear to have been compressed. I'm guessing it's because when you sync desktops, setting, wallpapers and so on that it would rather use a smaller file. So I have this:

Which eventually turns into this (after an hour or so)

http://www.coflash.com/stuff/compressed.png

Switch between tabs at 100% and move to Joel's face if you can. I saved these as PNGs so you can see exactly what I see.

What is this shit? Can I disable it somehow? What's the use of having a nice crisp display if they're going to make your images shitty looking?

It's not as if the image is 1GB, and apparently OneDrive gives you a free 15GB, so I can't make any sense of it.

Perhaps that could help?

EDIT: Or not, just questions but no answers.

Here's another article but they basically do what you did and save as PNG but you still get compression for some reason.

And this guy has the same issue and even deleting or replacing the cached image didn't work but he found a small workaround.

Well, figured out how to deal with Windows re-compressing the image after replacing the cached file with the original. Just had to remove the user accounts write access to the folder "CachedFile" and file "TranscodedWallpaper". This is all located in AppData\Roaming\Microsoft\Windows\Themes
