No, your preferred method of dealing with zombies is actually avoiding them whereas you had to kill most of them in Dead Island. Weapons break very quickly at the start and they're noe particularly powerful. You can also get overwhelmed very quickly if you're up against several zombies.
That said, I'm only up to the Meet with the other faction leader mission so I suppose it's still very early in the game. Others who are further along can tell you more.
The game gets a bit more challenging as they introduce more of the special zombies, gunshots also alert the free-runner ones during the day. It's easily the best 'Dead Island' of them all, not only graphics wise.
Step One: Acquire the Melee "Throw" skill, available in the "Power" skills menu. "Throw" comes after "Stun" in its specific branch of the Power skill tree, so you'll need to put a few levels into the discipline before the cheat can work. Doing so is just a matter of killing zombies.
Step Two: Choose a weapon, presumably a valuable one. Equip it.
Step Three: Throw the weapon using the Throw skill.
Step Four: Immediately after throwing the weapon (i.e., before it even hits the ground), open up your inventory, select the weapon you just threw, and "drop" it from your inventory.
Step Five: Sell the weapon(s).
Step Six: Repeat this process as many times as necessary to get all the money you need. Can also be performed before step five.

I don't think I have the necessary skill but as far as I know from what little I've checked of the game files so far and from what also worked in previous Dead Island games then nearly all of those can actually be modded in although chromatic aberration seems really difficult to get rid of (Needs access to the resource files or .rpack, not just the .pak files.) and the safe zones might be problematic too since they are somewhat dynamic.
(Seems new ones can appear as the game goes on, I have two right next to each other for example and others have become available as well.)
Come to me and i will give it to you, depending on how good you performed
-----------
HARRY, just jump around like some monkey and you will get lots of exp for agility.
But i don't know how one even gets exp for the survival tree. I guess by completing missions?
Nearly at 10 now with the Agility, already running like a madman Yeah missions get them up, been also busy looting the police vans and collecting drops, so that could be the thing only at 15% Story as well

That, and collecting air drop gear and bringing it to the quartermaster
How long did it take to find your first gun? After 10 hours I got nothing
Just do the story missions for a while and you will encounter those armed guys. The first gun dropped by some of them in a warehouse missions where i had to find two different objects
