Quote:
Do you sometimes think games are too hard to learn? If so, you’re not alone: EA’s chief creative officer Richard Hilleman thinks so too.

During a multiple developer interview on stage at D.I.C.E. 2015 this week, Hilleman said he feels modern games take the average player too long to learn what with the various controls and button maps.

“Our games are actually still too hard to learn,” he said. “The average player probably spends two hours to learn how to play the most basic game.”

“Asking for two hours of somebody’s time–most of our customers, between their normal family lives…to find two contiguous hours to concentrate on learning how to play a video game is a big ask.”

Hilleman was responding to comedian Pete Holmes, who said during the talk he’d like controller layouts and button maps to stay the same across franchises and games in the same series.

I just find them tedious and lackluster... that's why I give up on them. Guess they interpreted that as being hard Laughing

What would fall into the category of "most basic" game anyway?

PS So,...I guess it's safe to assume they'll be making their games even more simplified than they already are? Reaction

Why not always make the same game too? Or stick to your day job if you can't bother to learn a control scheme Reaction

Believable and relatable...Yep, sounds like Call of Duty

My question is, how are they going to 'streamline' it further if games are considered too complicated or hard.

realise they're not talking about us, they're talking about the ADD teen console gamer generation, so they're probably right... anything more than forward, backwards, left, right, look, shoot, reload, use, secondary equipme-WHOA WHOA WHOA, slow down there!, is overcomplicating things for them.

they've grown up on instant gratification, health regen, mission direction compasses, simple quest info and being led around by the nose.

but EA made this bed for themselves... not just EA, but ALL publishers, in pursuit of greater consumer bases.

yeah but i am starting to feel that the more they'll go this route the more they'll lose core consumers

A company like EA probably doesn't give a shit about losing some buyers, if it means they gain more new customers instead
They are just after the the most profit, like most big game companies today

well i meant it a bit differently - i guess I did not expressed myself properly
That more they'll go for money of Casuals (aka people who buy 4 games a year) the more they'll lose of they core audience (aka poeple who buy a lot of games) and it will bite in their asses in the long run

@prudislav
Well, i would call my previous post still valid then Smile
EA probably hired several experts to calculate the income after changes like this
But of course i hope EA fails with this Very Happy
