So I found Plasma Rifle in level 2. Is it a token weapon for a few shots until much later, or will the pinata enemies or world give plasma pickups?

You'll find plenty of plasma canisters during play, though outside of using the chainsaw to kill I don't know if standard glory kills drop plasma ammo.

Glory kills already got old for me at the end of second level + some snap maps, but the chainsaw is big fun.

PowerGamer wrote: | So how IdTech 6 is doing texture-wise (on highest quality texture settings)? Does it have any of the problems of its predecessor with awfully blurry Mega Texture implementation? Does the texture quality in Doom 4 stand on par with texture quality of recent AAA titles? |
Found this:
Low texture quality:
http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/WMokQgo7Bu9X3MTjdZuaQo.jpg
Ultra:
http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/XL7zqzXCEnLhvz3nV3m9mf.jpg
(Probably actually low and ultra full presets and not just for textures but still, small differences.)
Nightmare:
http://cdn.mos.cms.futurecdn.net/Cet2s73ouitLmXNrj8Uced.jpg
(Now we're talking, say goodbye to your VRAM though, technically you can push it even further by turning off compression but you'd probably want a Titan or something for that if playing above 1920x1080 )
Technically unless it's changed since IDTech5 it should be 4096x4096, 8192x8192 and 16384x16384
That's not individual texture resolution obviously but what it's using for the entire area as it streams things in and out as needed, same goes for shadow quality but that should be something like 2048, (high) 4096, (ultra) 8192 (nightmare) and again over the entire area and not individual shadows.
Still even with streaming as shown back with Rage 16384 while it makes a nice improvement to overall texture quality it does take a pretty large hit on VRAM usage.
(Speaking of Rage 3 or maybe even 4 GB VRAM was about what you wanted if you were using that tweak along with disabling texture compression so yeah don't turn off compression for Doom 4 unless you have a lot of spare VRAM, well I haven't tried but the game recommends 5+ GB without compression for I think it's 1920x1080 so imagine what it will do at higher screen resolutions.)

the "Tech5/Tech6" engine is a friggin' embarrassment regardless, I wish id/Bethesda would stop using the awful thing.

Carmack had ideas for overhauling IDTech6 extensively over IDTech5 but it never came to fruition as technology didn't really develop to allow for his visions of ray-tracing and all that stuff (Plans were laid around 2008 so a short while after Rage was released.) and then he left Bethesda for Occulus over VR differences though apparently there's still a lot of talent at ID remaining even if the core founders are now all gone.
(But the game and well game engine is focused on consoles and it's aiming for 60 FPS instead of the original plan for that other Doom 4 - "DOOM-COD" - with IDTech5 and 30 FPS but better image quality.)

Can that be done at the moment? A search over the last 24 hours mostly results in people talking about screenshots being compressed.
I'd try it just for fun. So far at Nightmare the game has been using 3 to 3.5gb out of my 8gb.

I am 99.9% sure that nobody will ever beat Ultra Nightmare without cheating.
Btw surround sound issues are apparently fixed if you change your Windows audio setting to 24 bit/44100 hz.

Unsurprisingly, their "article" also states the following
Quote: | glory kills serve as tiny, needed oases in the potential chaos of Doom's more frenetic encounters, and they encourage a very active play style that it seems clear id Software intended for the game. |

Thankfully these gimmicks don't tarnish the final experience from what I was reading, but still, this sort of nonsense always makes me a sad facepalm-y Picard
While I'm patiently waiting I've restarted my umpteenth Brutal Doom playthrough..it's so good that it's therapeutic. If the new one will manage to capture even part of that awesomeness, I'll be a happy panda. |
actually, for once they are completely right and you are completely wrong, glory kills are necessary - they drop some precious hp and provide 1-2 secs of invulnerability, they are also nice for movement purposes - they are triggered even if you are few meters away from the enemy so you instantly jump onto them with finishing blow, making frantic combat almost like dance - weaken that fucker, shot at the next one, glory kill previous one, jump onto next and so on, in a weird way it feels almost like chaining moves in tony hawk or bulletstorm, that combined with ledge-grab mechanic makes for an very fluid and somewhat chained combat, it almost doesnt feel like fpp at all, in some sense obviously.
no the other hand, i`ve found myself enjoying the exploration/secrets phase almost more than the combat it just feels great to dig around the levels and try to reach places which might lead to some secret stuff.

Free invulnerability and Bullestorm-like auto-moves, a true Doom player doesn't need those
All kidding aside, I shall reserve my judgement until I'll actually put my hands on it. If the pinata party turns out to be a necessity and not just an option, then it's a case of bad game design in my book.

Can we all just take a minute and reminisce about the Doom 3 scene release in 04? I hadn't seen that many seeders/leechers in my life....

That was the first game I ever torrented. Prior to that it was all FTP or downloading in parts from websites.

Thanks, I tried those two. It didn't seem to make a difference, except possibly make the game very slightly blurrier.
Note: my game looks normal but my screenshots are very dark. I made them brighter before uploading them.
This was Nightmare:
http://l1.picsurge.com/QLPlsF/1.bmp
This was after both commands:
http://l1.picsurge.com/QLPlsF/2.bmp
A scratch high on the wall seems a bit blurry afterward.
The writing on the grenade box too.
This is low:
http://l1.picsurge.com/QLPlsF/low.bmp
Opening room, Nightmare:
http://l1.picsurge.com/QLPlsF/3.bmp
After the two commands:

Maybe someone else will have a different experience than mine, but thanks for the info!

I just finished my first play-through. I really didn't know what to expect so my expectations were quite low. AMAZING GAME! From start to finish, everything was done really well.
I had 3 CTD's. Only one of them was at a really shitty time.
