You can't buy ships after the game is released.
Also the ships have insurance you need to pay for.
Its no different to playing Elite Dangerous a week after it was released.

Forgive me, but how does that negate the pay-to-win view? Those that shelled out cash WILL have an advantage over players that didn't and have to start with nothing at all.
Now, how long that advantage lasts is determined by how slow the grind is. It'll eventually equalize out, but the undeniable pure advantage is there.

If you have played Elite Dangerous you could see how big and small ships are handled and how it doesn't matter, and if it did matter there would be huge problems even if you couldn't buy ships prior to release.
Lets say you buy the best ship now, when the game releases you will be stronger then most however you won't have the money to pay for the running costs or insurance of the ship making it risky as another player who purchased a similar ship could bankrupt you.
But even that aside think of it this way.
Scenario 1 with buying ships: You enter Star Citizen on release day, some players have the best ship in the game and because of that there is some kind of game issue, maybe they shoot and kill you.
Scenario 2 without buying ships: You enter Star Citizen after 1 week, some players have the best ship because they earned them, and because of that there is some kind of game issue, maybe they shoot and kill you.
So unless this game is some kind of competition of who can play the game the longest without sleeping then the game is mostly going to end up the same.
The only thing that can really change things is if you can buy insurance or ships with real money after the game release, but you can't do that.

I think it's naive to think they're going to just stop selling those ships once the game starts. That's their money maker. No way they give that up.

Isn't like every big ship available for purchase now coming with at least 6 months of insurance?
There is no defense in the fact that this game has pay to win elements in it.

Thats what they said. There are other ways to make money.

Even if you were right it its still not pay to win as long as ships can't be purchased after release.
I already explained why.

Pay to win has almost become like a genre; the definition is so muddled it hardly holds any value or definition anymore.

Well, by this definition, World of Warcraft would be pay to win, because you can shell out 50€ to get instantly to max level -> if you don't do it an play on pvp server, the player who just shelled out 50€ could just stand at your spawn location and rape you for ever.
(I also think they will keep on selling the ships after release, but they're hardly p2w, as long as you can get the same ships ingame)

How big is PvP going to be?
I mean, its supposed to take place in a big universe. Not No Man's Sky universe, but big. If you think about it in-game, your character doesn't know how your opponent raised the money to buy the SuperX-KickUrBalls-Space Fighter. Do you even care? If it wasn't a player, but an AI coming at you with a great ship, would you think twice?
Some parts of Star Citizen will be 'regulated', sort of like EVE I suppose. Other areas will be more or less lawless and you're open to get raped by aliens and other players. If you're a lone player, and Big Hoss Space-Bandit comes with his gang of 10 nerds with Aurora starter ships you're still probably going to get raped even with no Pay2Win involved. They bothered to organize, so they're reaping the benefits of being able to penetrate your ship every which way they like at the same time.
If you want to stay safe and not get Hoss'ed or Pay2Win'ed, you probably should stay in a safer area, or gang up with other players to mitigate some of the effects of Pay2Win.
Player skill affects this game to some extent? If you suck ass, you probably can't use the SuperX-KickUrBalls-Space Fighter as well as the next guy? I dunno man. Shit. You can probably hire Elite NPCs with Terminator Arnold aim to fly them for you.

Do you go back to level 1 in World of Warcraft when you die without insurance? Or at the very least is there a gigantic penalty when you die with insurance?
I probably should have mentioned this before.
Right now in Elite Dangerous if you gave me an Anaconda ship and someone killed me, I would lose it, no second chances.
This is simply because the excess from the Insurance is insanely more then the amount of money I have.
So assuming you can't buy ships after release, how is that pay to win?
I would literally lose the $100 or whatever the ship cost... all in the space of 5 minutes.
EternalBlueScreen wrote: | mitigate some of the effects of Pay2Win.. |
As you can see in my explanation, assuming you can't buy ships after release, there is no effect of pay to win as long as we exclude the fact that playing day 1 might feel like we are playing on day 7.
But again, all its going to take is one person who purchased a big ship to kill another person who purchased a big ship and assuming its like elite dangerous.. somebody is about to lose $100 because they can't afford insurance excess.

The rule of thumb is, don't fly and lose what you can not afford to buy back. If people who buy ships lose them in SC and then that is it, its done, then they are willing to lose them. Simple.
P.s if you are flying around in a base ship worth 144,000,000 creds and don't have the rebuy amount in your wallet then you are nothing but a wally.

They really have no excuse for delaying it.
Unlike multiplayer you can scale a single player campaign quite easily compared to the funds they have.
That is.. unless squadron 42 has coop or something?
