Piranha for the most part at least redeemed themselves with Risen but then went full retard on the sequels to that one. sigh.
Risen 2 was shit indeed.
But Risen 3 was a rather fun playthrough for me.
i don't think risen 3 was any less shit than the second. Jowood just doesn't learn. They don't learn from mistakes and they just don't get better at anything. It's quite sad.
There's a tweaked further optimized ge3.ini file in that guide, maxing the settings to what the engine limits is seems to tank performance even on more modern GPU's so lowering the view distance slightly seems to help without sacrificing too much visual fidelity although the game is a few years old now so don't expect too much from the tweaks compared to how more recent games handle view distance and LOD.
WHich one has the best combat system?
Gothic 3? or any of the risens?
I feel Risen's (1) is simple but rock solid. Sadly, the boss battles weren't.
and would you regard it as the best risen?
Yeah, I absolutely hated the combat in the 2nd one. Which also lead me to skip the 3rd one completely so I can't give you an opinion on that one. But based on the opinion of people that have similar preferences as I do, it was a good decision.

What Method said, the first Risen is the only one that combat wise can be considered worthy of the oldpiranha(tm) tag. Unfortunately it had other problems also, especially affecting the last third of the game which was uninspired to say the least. Still! A good attempt overall all things considered.
Risen 3 felt better than the second one (definitely not a big achievement ), but it still had that gamepad-centric combat system with couch auto leaping, approximative hitboxes, uberrolling and whatnot that made it look a bit like a flabby trombone. Twasn't a bad game overall in my opinion, just...mildly disappointing, with a decent world/exploration alternating genuinely abysmal writing.
I love this game, but even with the patches it still lacks on certain parts where you just know they rushed it because the publisher wanted it out. Which is a pity.
Still play it from time to time, as I do the other Gothics and the first Risen.

Also, still runs like utter anus.

I read someone in the WOG-Forums who installed it on a RAMDisk and it still stutters.

Rough early version of the Geo what it was engine and then D3D9 and single threaded and probably a lot of issues with resource allocation (Spellbound makers of the less than well fated Arcania helped out pluggin a good number of memory leaks too for the unofficial patch project!) plus a huge game world and tons of script and assets for the time but not scaling well above possibly dual core at most (Same as other engines at the time just before multi-threading took off in full.) and so on.
Risen 1 was also a bit of a mess though more so for the poor console port (X360 was it?) though the sequels and Elex would start showing what could be although it hit other snags and issues in turn.
Potential is there but the rushed nature of the development and all sorts of half implemented features if not outright bugs or broken or cut content even with mods trying to restore part of it then yeah it's not really solvable and with the engine limits brute forcing via superior hardware isn't going to fully resolve tech issues either.
Game also had some fun early promo art and tech renders or target concepts though the early alpha images afterwards also differed in several ways portraying a much bleaker darker world than what the final version ended up with though not as goofy as what the WTH expansion forced in with character redesigns and some attempts at new enemy types like the Troglodytes.
Not quite up there with early big hypers like Ubisoft Code Masters though ha ha!
EDIT: Part of the image does still hold up too like the way the speed tree and vegetation system is implementation.
Early days ahead of advanced lighting and shaders and ways to use normal mapping and various effects and details, kinda snazzy results for a few games and others well hello everything looking super shiny or like plastic.

It's a shame that Gothic III's great exploration and world colluded with the fairly bland core gameplay and structure in terms of quests/reactivity/how the map was actually used, it could have been truly amazing but the final product just remained stuck in a boary dream. Still very enjoyable and atmospheric though, especially now that the signature nasty bugs have been ironed out (haven't replayed the game in a decade, will do it in the future although the mythological iffy performance is scary ).
My Piranhian scale of preference would be something like this: Gothic 2 + NOTR > Gothic 1 > ELEX > Risen 1 > Gothic III > Risen 3 > Risen 2 > the Arcania imposter
ELEX is difficult to put in. I think I preferred Risen 1 and Gothic III to it (entirely subjective), still better than both the other Risens and that other game we don’t mention.

Did anyone find out where to download the Gothic 3 Mini Mods pack from the video above? I can't seem to find it since the video doesn't show the download site and Google doesn't help either.
Is the patch 1.75.14 the last one for Gothic 3? I see the mentions of a hotfix, but not sure if there is hotfix for .14, or the .14 is hotfix for some previous 1.75 version...

I had no problem with any of the links, installed everything like an hour ago.
So far so good.. the performance is still shit on a 1080ti and a recent i5 lol.. but as long as you don't download any of the ultra-mega-super-graphics .ini the game doesn't stutter much at all.
Where did you find the Gothic 3 Mini Mod pack at 7:23 in the video?
all the links are in the description of the video.
if it didn't come with links i'd say it would be a pretty shitty guide! it's standard for these types of videos, so keep that in mind, saves you a lot of work.
