First mindhacking sequence...
Spoiler: |
You're exploring the memories of the guy in apartment 104, and there's a part where no matter which path I choose, I keep going in circles.
I assumed the right door is the one with the garbage cans, because that's what the screens are showing, but it's not, and no matter where I go, I end up in the same place.

"I think Call of Duty resonates because it's believable and relatable," Sledgehammer Games cofounder Michael Condrey says.
Believable and relatable...Yep, sounds like Call of Duty

Yes, the screen shows the doorway you need to go through and it changes everytime you go through the right doorway...you keep up ending in the same spot for about 4-5 times befiore stuff happens.

"Rutger Hauer is a big-name catch for developer Bloober Team, but he mumbles through his lines as if he's Tommy Wiseau. Worse, while the game revolves around Dan's attempts to reconnect with his estranged and possibly murdered son, the fragmentary presentation of his memories and Hauer's unemotional delivery makes it difficult to care about Dan's crisis."

finished it, very nice game, this and layers of fear are very nice surprises from the new developer. game is like an old sf movie where crts are still a thing, very similar to blade runner in atmosphere and the synthetic music, had some condemned criminal origins vibe too.

Yeah, such W-powered titles tend to struggle to maintain the high standards set by the sublime presentation, environments and premises, and it is indeed a shame. One is often left with the desire to have more full-fledged mechanics, more depth, more control, more meaningful choices, this is a sub-genre that really really likes to tease the player. Still, the game tickled me in all the non-augmented places thanks to the visual banquet capturing the essence of a rotten mysterious world, with decaying shacks and their creepy believable inhabitants, all the old sexy terminals (some of them interactive), cables infesting the area, eerie neon lighting and metallic sounds all creating cyberpunk porn.
It took me around 9 hours to finish it, and while the formula sadly never strayed from the limited path of the walking sim (no combat at all, heavily script-driven structure, the usual things), it felt like a big improvement over Layers of Fear. It combines exploration, multiple augmented visions and occasional beasts to avoid, with basic interactivity/puzzles and interesting lore, implemented naturally. Also memory hacking, one of the most absurd mental representations of virtual mindfuckery thus far (playing this game with VR equipment must be a genuinely vomit-inducing experience).
The downside of the journey is the aggressive cinematic factor that has the habit of eating fun like a cookie monster. Many sections feel restrictive and too guided, nowhere near as satisfying as SOMA - the game that shares many similarities with this one, and that for me represents the pinnacle of the genre along with Amnesia and Alien Isolation, the glorious trinity (although with completely different approaches based on glorious cat 'n mouse terror...and soiled pants).
If this Observer had better/more expanded gameplay elements and a tighter narrative (some uneven writing, Rutger's performance is a bit hit and miss), it could be right there with the greats, but despite the flaws, I would be a lying replicant pigeon if I said that I didn't enjoy the twisted experience. A solid 7/10 isoride for whoever likes taking a peek at what the grim augmented future has to offer, including the pear-shaped hand-holding module v1.A.
About the ending
Spoiler: | I decided not to merge with Adam, even though he wasn't completely evil, but I didn't like his motives, the deviant ways to achieve them and all the lies. Screw his manipulative kernel self
The final scene itself wasn't exactly a memorable one, on the bright side though it left a pretty big room for a sequel. I really hope it can happen at some point, a round two that could be the final evolutionary step towards greatness. |

Haha, they're both solid "experiences" in their own way (the modern and cinematic type, not gameplay-centric), with completely different approaches but at the same time one can spot similarities when it comes to merging narrative and basic interactions.
I usually like having more substance in games (RE7 is a recent example that nailed the balance between proper old-school gameplay and cinematic style for me, despite the weak final part), but when the result is so immersive a man can only sit back and enjoy the ride.
Aquma wrote: | 9 hours? That's pretty nice, I was afraid it'll be along the lines of Layers of Fear. All I'm reading about the game seems really solid, I'll have to try it. Not to mention, seeing my city in its future version should be a fun experience |
Indeed, I took it slowly (as per usual ) and read every log, but the game is definitely longer than Layers and more complete so to speak. The representation of the suburban apartments is amazing, albeit limited in scope for the obvious constraints. I kept imagining the same amount of details on a larger open world scale with proper RPG gameplay elements on top of it and nearly fainted. Obi Wan CDProjekt you're our only hope!

Is it more like gone home or like Soma?
I loved both but I hated the monsters in Soma. That game would be so much better if they just let me explore. hiding from monsters is not fun to me

Well, regardless of my "review" I'd say it's really worth it to play through it, because the game has its moments, which you won't find in any game. The atmosphere alone is worth it.
Definitely better and down-to-earth than Layers Of Fear which I stopped playing after 1-2 hours.

Finished the game today in about 12 hours and it's pretty good, love the setting and as a game it's also an improvement over Layers of Fear.
Good:
- Fantastic atmosphere, great artwork and design. It really immerses you in a convincing Blade Runner-esque environment.
- Interesting storyline with good pacing.
- Graphics and audio are top notch, especially considering this is a budget title.
- More than a walking simulator, there's not so much gamplay but the exploration is fun.
Bad:
- The optimization isn't that good with the framerate occasionally slowing down into the 30's, but mostly the game manages a steady 60 fps with max settings.
- I didn't like Rutger Hauer's voice acting, he often sounded like a tired old man struggling to finish his sentences and it didn't really fit the character of Dan Lazarski. Of course they only wanted him for his role in Blade Runner.
