@h0rnyfavn Try ninjutsu with the iga ninja suit I think it's called. Can't remember where you get it but if you dump most of your points in dex it's a pretty strong ranged build.
I'm still on the DLC here but I'd give it 8.5 mostly because the combat system is just so deep and satisfying. ki pulse stance/weapon switching with sexy combos and abilities is good stuff men.

I was waiting for this patch to start playing. I can confirm that the mouse implementation is good, works perfectly fine. Took me a while to set up the key bindings the way I wanted to, but thankfully this game allows for some insane customization when it comes to those and it actually extends to all the options from what I've seen. It has options for a ton of things most other games don't, pretty cool. My only issue port-wise is that they haven't made the icons for the key bindings switch to keyboard and mouse icons if you use that control method. They do however show you all the icons next to the key bindings in the options though, so that's neat at least.
First impressions, the port is actually pretty damn fine with the newest patch.

I couldn't connect with this game at all and I tried. It feels so cheap that I can't imagine why they needed like 10+ years to get it done. The difficulty is artificial, the graphics are dated even by the standards of the current generation of consoles, the UI is terrible and on top of everything it has this spam of pointless loot that feels like a chore to browse through. I did like the complexity of the combat system, but it wasn't enough for me to properly enjoy this game. I don't think Nioh has anything on Dark Souls, the combat might be slightly better, but everything else is way worse.

Well, you're entitled to your opinion, but see, this is why i never read anything on your blog. |

I always mention the good parts in my reviews because a review has to be balanced. However, compared with the praise machines out there, I have no restrictions on pointing out the problems.

It's fine, I don't need validation for my gaming opinions through praises brought by others. But how much better the video games industry would be if everyone would just say the positives, right?!
Bob Barnsen wrote: |
Just like your post about Nioh, which is just dumb. |
Your statement is dumb because my post is not a review... That's a personal comment about why Nioh didn't click with me. I didn't even say Nioh was a bad game, I just mentioned the negatives that were a turn off for me.

It wasn't in development for 10 years though, back then it was a different style of game, like a mix between onimusha and dynasty warriors. It was re-made a couple of times and the current soulslike version is only startet development a couple years ago.
The combat is definitely better and more refined compared to Soulsborne, and that's it.
The atmosphere, level design and lore are just so, so inferior.

I know, it was an exaggeration to prove a point. Nioh had 2 development cycles, the original one was scrapped, but the game of today has been in the works since 2008 or so. That's a lot of development time for a game filled of rehashed content, don't you think?
The combat is an upgrade and I think it's a model to be followed. It's a bit more complex than what Dark Souls provides and that can't hurt. But as I said and you did, everything else is pretty much inferior. I do prefer the medieval fantasy settings of Dark Souls games over the alternate history of Japan from Nioh, but I didn't let this affect my judgement. The level design and audio design don't stand out in any way and the atmosphere in general is lacking. As a Hack & Slash it could be a decent/good experience, even if the difficulty is increased quite artificially, but I'm not into going through dozens of variations of the same item.

Now that I think of it, the whole game is basically like Bloodborne's chalice dungeons.

I pretty much worked my ass off writing over 300 articles in my spare time. I didn't ask anything from anybody. I didn't put a single commercial on my blog and I didn't force anyone to read my stuff. I have a passion for video games and I turned my hobby into something more. I had to learn (and still learning) the process of writing in a critical but somewhat artistic way. I always tried to keep an objective perspective over video games. And more important, my reviews are my own, not affected by any exterior factors. You'll see me criticizing games I got from publishers/developers if the critique was necessary.
It's in my nature to be more critical than others and why should I change that? We live in a culture of praising, where actual flaws are looked at like qualities propagating them even further. That's why we have this current trend of open world games filled with pointless activities.
You don't want to read my stuff? Sure man, it's no problem, I'm not on everyone's taste, but you don't have to insult me.
The posts above are my own, username Nodrim from nfohump forums. It's not an "official statement" related to my blog. I stand by the fact that most of my statement doesn't need the support of arguments. You can take a look at a two screenshots and realize immediately how dated the graphics are or how poorly designed the UI is. Everything else is debatable but easily to argued for, but you hit me in the head instead of asking why.
The difficulty is cheaply designed because everything hits like a truck just to make things more difficult. It's easy to spot this just by taking that damage debuff on weapons and see how big the difference is. There's also the problem of animations with enemies that have poorly telegraphed attacks. The Souls games got praised for fairness and for the most part I can stand behind that, I can't say the same thing about Nioh.
The level design wasn't even in my original post but I'll add it here anyway because it works hand in hand with the feeling of exploration and to an extent, the itemization. The levels are sub-par compared to what we have come to expect from Souls-like games. The game reuses locations and visual assets with every occasion and it's not even done in an interesting way. Most levels lack the intricate design and therefor the atmosphere that Souls games have, they are small and sometimes quite linear with predictable patterns. The incentive for exploration is greatly reduced just because of these factors, but when you add randomized loot and repetitive enemies, there's little drive left for exploration.

I never noticed you changing your opinion when i said something, or anyone else here.
Instead you just come up with more arguments to further fortify your view of point.
So i don't bother giving you any arguments, as they would be nullified anyways.
