I just followed a quick mini guide on how to join clerics early and with little to no hassle
And when I got psi powers I started roflstomping enemies The balance in this game is just...Although considering that even stats description is wrong(they probably turned off stats increasing damage etc right before the release lol) I'm not surprised at the state of the game.

Clerics:
Also get the flamethrower, for even easier domination of enemies.
And sad that the combat exp still seems to be fucked up after the patches.
Though IIRC, those strong monsters often guarded some loot. Which in return compensates for the low exp and loot from the enemy itself.

One hour in and I'm liking it so far... really reminds me of a visually upgraded Risen.

I am the only one playing melee? I didnt use ranged weapons at all. 24 LVL, I'm with Bersekers.
When fighting with one enemy I can rape overpowered monsters as long as I am not oneshot.

I only switched to melee when i already was pretty much overpowered.
Used the 2-hand Hammer of God from the Clerics.

Still haven't decided on a faction but was thinking about going with the berserkers, but reading what everyone is writing here about clerics and weapons I'm starting to wonder...

Naw man, just join the faction you think is the coolest. The berserkers have a +50 melee damage spell, so I think you'll be just fine.
I joined the Clerics because I didn't agree with the berserkers regressive stance towards technology, and I wanted cool glowy space-armor.
Also report how things are with the berserkers if you decide to join them; I had the feeling you could maybe influence some of the warlords to be a bit more progressive.

Took my Elexian time and between one fermented potion too many and the murdering of thousands of Magalanian creatures I finished the game as well (in about 44 hours, doing every single quest that I encountered). Despite all the signature drawbacks due to the tiny budget, consolish UI designed with MSPaint and usual flaws that are still present like menacing Albs, I loved it . This is Piranha's shiny redemption in my book and the return to form that was needed to fight the good fight in the troubled modern RPG world, far from perfect, but definitely a step into the good ol' direction.
The combat system (with the very needed introduction of the stamina gauge), slow and rewarding sense of progression (from Forrest Gump to Terminator), refreshingly great amount of challenge and trademark PB exploration were all very satisfying for me, I waited nearly thirty hours before joining a faction and start tackling the main quest since I really needed to savour the huge bizarre pre-sci-fistoric setting combining woods, deserts and iced lands whilst having my arse kicked by all their exotic inhabitants, robo-beasts, angry raptors, trolls and giant insects (without counting the people themselves).
My initial idea was to live the Bezerkers' vintage rural life, they had a fairly good and reasonable cause despite being backwards and unnecessarily anal about pretty much anything tech-wise, but my spontaneous actions during all their side-quests basically got me trade-banned from the camp, which made me understand in a blunt manner that I was not welcome there.
Then discovered the Clerics, they looked absolutely majestic and very alluring, but it didn't take long to realize that beyond their technologically advanced potential, they were hiding ridiculous religious motives and silly brainwashing making them look like a bunch of uppity and deluded folks, and that turned me off.
So I did what it had to be done, I started hanging around at the Outlaw Fort, desperately trying to dodge all the cheeky bastards who wanted to scam me, slowly started being accustomed to the manners there (well, the lack thereof) and lifestyle based on the brutal concept of "survive and profit", and became a member of the Scrapland. It wasn't exactly dream-like experience, but at least it was an environment free from bullshittery and with a nice anarchic and deranged feeling to it* which fit the post-apocalyptic theme. I could get ahold of some damn good shotguns and quickly became a stim-addicted New-Vegas-like lord of mayhem with a fetish for explosives.
One of the best aspects of the game is that every action has tangible consequences and it really is proper role-playing® business, with occasional awkward moments where scripts overlap and their priority get scrambled, but still a valid implementation.
The game eventually becomes really easy at some point (an inevitability in the Piranha titles) and loses some charm (the loot placement and XP balance indeed could have been better also), but the fun factor never goes away, it's good to be a complete badass after having suffered for so many hours, going on a killing spree for no reason and embracing the beauty of the outlaw life.
*
Spoiler: | It was entertaining though, with the sidekick Ray and his constant troubles with people wanting to murder him at every corner, the highly suspicious Rat (which I strangely trusted at first, giving him 50 shards for no reason) turning his life around in a brilliant (evil ) way and becoming my best buddy in the camp, the crazy Doc, the possibility to be able to save Liam from being forever_cuckhold by murdering his sinister monster of a "wife" and then granting him happiness with the hot hooker. Even the Scrap Lord liked me, although poor Billy had to pay for it when I tried to lie about the Cleric lurkers . And then Nasty, basically the female version of Supermax |
I found the writing and dialogues actually pretty solid all things considered, they never reach any kind of excellence but both the main quest and side stories have enough intrigues, interesting cringe-free characters (most of them at least), betrayals, Elexian lore and mystery to keep the attention alive. Same for the visuals, not exactly mind-blowing but pleasant and detailed enough, with no performance issues nor game-breaking bugs either which is another plus. 8 big blue Elexit shards out of 10, one of the most entertaining games that I've played in recent times (definitely could make a case for being a serious goty candidate). My body is ready for ELEX 2! (we already know that's in production, and the very cliffhangerish ending definitely demands a continuation).
Bonus spoiler, the amazing romance with the Outlaw companion Nasty:

How big is the chance this'll get some community patches in the near future? Considering I finished even the worst of their games (Risen 2), my autistic mind is bothered about not finishing this one.

This one is actually one of the most polished PB games. The existing shortcommings are not something that can be fixed by patches.

great mod... https://forum.worldofplayers.de/forum/threads/1504790-Elex-NeffO%C2%B4s-Vegetation-Mod-1-0
also make sure you use the mod that fixes the weather/lightning to how it was in the previous patch - much more atmospheric.. its on NexusMods.
The thing i know people have been complaining about a lot is the terrible hitboxes for melee weapons, hopefully they fix that.. haven't played too much yet to really notice these problems.

What worries me most are the scripting and quest logic bugs reported on various forums, I was hoping there'd be community patches coming for things like that.
Are you thinking of doing some mod work for this one Vurt?

y u no link?!
Dunno, was liking it more at the beginning... now I'm roaming around in the desert and it feels a bit meh, but nowhere as gothic 3 empty.
I think PB games work better in a small confined world, like Risen and Gothic 1 vs all the crap Risen's, and Gothic 3. Even Gothic 2 was fairly contained.

Absolutely, both Gothic 2 (+ Expansion) and Gothic for me remain the top PB experiences in terms of rewarding contents and overall quality of their crafted world. Having said that, the game definitely takes the close third spot for me alongside Risen 1 in the virtual Piranhian podium , it feels great to still be able to play something like this in today's gaming world, especially after the recent entries which didn't quite tickle me in the right way.
Elex's scope was perhaps too ambitious for its own good (I agree with Bearish regarding the somewhat uninspired loot and odd balancing), but the devs still did a fine job in my opinion with the little resources available (it could have gone much worse ) and in general it's a fairly smooth ride as well when it comes to roughness and bugs. The only annoyances that I encountered were related to occasional Benny Hill-like AI pathfinding and a couple of instances where completing difficult side-quests ended up creating a 'backlog' effect in a few main story-related dialogues, but nothing particularly serious.

I agree, considering what resources they had they did a fantastic job. Not sure why they decided on such a huge world, I think they could have made a much smaller world and achieve more quality that way. There's a lot of empty completely nonsense places in the current game world.
And the animation of the raider hitting the wall just killed me. Hopefully the next installment would be an improvement.

Well, uninstalled for now.
It was ok in the beggining on the berserker's village, but as soon as you pull the "scope" back it becomes too... diluted.
I was still having some fun but nowhere as near as in gothic 1-2 and risen 1. Open world is not their strong suit IMO
