I just finished the ride through the post-Blyatlands, and although it didn't feel as consistent as I expected I'd be a dirty lying suka if I said that I didn't have a great time with it.
It's fundamentally still the ol' Metro, but featuring different concepts stitched together with robust duct tape: it starts as an open haven for explorative baby Streloks, then it turns into Mad Artyomax, then into a linear-ish Far Metrocry hybrid, and lastly, it's full handhold-y Metro corridor edition. There's the usual couch syndrome that very often gets in the way with sins such as blind E button abuse, no prone/lean, pointless quick time events, no bullet economy and scripted Cow-a-Doody moments that break the pacing but thankfully, the game is solid enough to support the experience. All its derpy annoyances are alleviated by the meaty shooting, the incredible attention to detail throughout the decaying environments, quality visuals/art style and the dripping atmosphere, the good stuff
The story with its goofy extra-long dialogues and twists reminded me of a Syfy production (with all that it entails), still, in the end, I liked how the journey unfolded thanks to the genuine dose of Eastern European charm, naiveté and imagination. I got the bad ending though :'(
I appreciated a lot the fact that the game doesn't clutter the screen with any directional clutter and lets you go with the flow. I picked the Russian language + Ranger Hardcore/Minimal HUD difficulty in order to maximize the immersion and keep things challenging, the best combo in my opinion - which doesn't quite cure the bipolar AI, but makes it more bearable. The performance was surprisingly acceptable on my rusty rig, at High details/dx11/#nofur/1080p the framerate rarely saw dramatic drops.
All in all, despite the warts and unevenness I'd still give it 8 charcoal filters/10. In this day and age, handcrafted single-player story-driven shooters are a rare breed of three-eyed Tsar Fishes that must be preserved, even though the not-so-epic lethal toxic rain keeps falling down.

Even though I agree with many of the criticisms, I still enjoyed most of the ride. First open area was great, second not so much, third not so open area was better again.
I can't remember when I last shot a weapon as satisfying as Metro's AK in a game. The sound ( when not silenced ), recoil, everything was great. I actually like that shots don't hit the center of the reticle in pinpoint accuracy.
My biggest beefs were takedown prompts often just not apprearing, wonky head hitboxes, and the desert area being a little boring compared to the rest.
I also wish they'd made it clear that Bandits can be killed liberally without fear of a bad ending. I got the good ending eventually, playing "adaptive stealth", as in if I got caught, I'd do my best to fight and stay alive instead of immediately quickloading. I would've liked to stealth-snipe more, but was worried to do so because of the endings thing. If only I'd have known bandits didn't count.
Best use of HDR I've seen to date. The game looks amazing on an OLED.

If you get a red flash you did something bad.
If you free the slaves, twice, it should flash white.

Hm, don't think I've come across something like that. Only did the parts in the church (killed a few, until they surrendered) and the mechanic.
There must have been a door there in the wall, when I came in.
Truly gone fishing.

You would know if you did something bad, there's a 'bad sound' and red flash.
Slaves will come on a later map.
Also there is one moment I know of where you shouldn't kill anyone, if you do you will lose a companion. It's a short level and you can just knock em out or sneak by.

Don't kill religious nuts in first map. Don't kill tree people or "pirates " in third map. Don't kill anyone who surrenders. Free slaves and prisoners when you can. Pass main quest sections without getting spotted and not killing anyone. Note that if you knock someone out and they fall a long distance or into water, it counts as a kill. Bandits and mutants are free game and don't count against the good ending, except the gorilla types in the last part, don't kill those. Do the group members' personal quests. You must also make sure everyone in your group makes it through alive.
NPC conversations no longer give karma points, like it did in earlier Metro games, so no need to listen to every one of them if you don't want to.

Started playing, I'm at the first Aurora "stop".
Spoiler: | is it wrong that I'm not heading to the church in the water mark and instead wander around, killing bandits? |

You seem to get moved around the map just following the storyline, so no reason not to stay close to the main quest marker.

Anyone know why I die? I just randomly die, nothing is there. The 2nd time where u hear the BEEP I tried a trainer for infinite health, it lasted a bit longer but I still died.
Playing CPY release btw.

Do you have an overlay enabled? Geforce Experience crashes the game on irregular intervals.

Did you try switching to dx11?
New / different drivers might help. Depends on crashes, ofc, though.

Dx12 were quite unreliable for me too (had both stuttering and random crashes with no performance boost), whereas using dx11 didn't give me any annoying technical problem. Might be indeed worth a try
@KillaSeven: yeah, the game would be more enjoyable without the random console checkpoint system, I had one of those moments as well in the section with all the damned spiders. Some scripts were triggered incorrectly and kept getting poisoned to death until I found a safe spot behind a desk and eventually survived. I think the alternative is restarting the whole chapter which definitely sucks.

i don't know what's wrong with this game or my system... at times it looks absolutely gorgeous, turn around a corner and say hello to those abominably hideous textures
some impressions (high preset): https://imgur.com/a/fn0cZ5s
...but even when the game is looking at its best, i have a feeling of a somewhat dull and unsharp overall image (1080p might be the issue)

Almost done with with first part and I really like it so far. Let's see where the train stops next
Oh, the fact that the asshole Artyomski doesn't say shit pisses me off, like all the other characters are supposed to guess what's going to happen.
