I think firecrackers work in phase 2.

No they don't work any more only phase 1.

You're probably right. I can't remember if they worked or not in phase 2. I know I used firecrackers on the boss when I beat him on my first playthrough. On NG+ I didn't need such cheap tactics. Mr. Green

Oh that's cool, never thought of that. I used the fan mostly for the headless and shichimen, makes them trivial.

Phase 2 you can also use the spear R2>R2 drag move to drag out the centipede from his neck for posture damage.

But yeah I never used any of these "tricks" when I first won. Just take phase 2 slow, run away when he does the scream, bait the lunging attack and move in to attack the side as he sweeps, and if you parry some of the sword attacks from his normal combos he'll finish with a big strike that's easy to dodge and gives a long window to deal damage.

And how are we supposed to know that this particular trick is needed in this phase? Laughing

It's not, I beat the ape without firecrackers or any prosthetics on my first try, it was one of the easier bosses I felt as long as you keep your distance and look out for his combos, in 2nd phase I played it really safe and only punished his slide attack, it took a while but was more safe.

You figure out after the first deathblow that you don't do damage and instead push him back, then you notice the open parts of the bridge and it's pretty obvious what you need to do.
I did him on my 2nd try because I fell down myself.

I did. I read there was some trick to him, but it was easy to discover how to do it. He was easy to deathblow and after him crushing walls, it was easy to know what to do.

Going by PS4 trophy percentages, about 15%.
On PC it seems to be about 20%. Maybe because you can cheat :P

31% have beaten the ape on PS4, 39% on steam.

Playing it with no HUD ( not even in combat ) made bosses easier ( no distractions at all , plus no getting nervous when about to break boss posture ).

Finally finished it!

Overall, good game, too frustrating bullshit hit boxes especially on last boss.
Exploration kinda sucked, variety sucked, items pick ups and gear sucked. It's a good game at what it does (even great) but I like soulsborne formula more

I hope we'll never see another game like this made by FROM.

Loving this game. I can't get enough of the From formula. The feeling of becoming more skilled is unmatched by any other game. Going away and reflecting about how to defeat a boss then coming back to put it into practice before finally nailing it

I gave up after 30 minutes Laughing
It wasn't necessarily the difficulty or the amount of times you die that did it (I was prepared for that), but being punished extra for dieing a lot (losing xp + rot). That additional element is just too masochistic for my taste Very Happy
Each his own, I guess Laughing

The rot at least is inconsequential. Hardly noticed it at.

Rot is pretty inconsequential and later on you get shitloads of items to heal it, I only healed it once in the whole game.
XP is lost only by half of current skill point progress, you cant lose more than down to the last full skill point, so in that way its actually less stressful than in Souls where you would just lose all your XP if you didnt recover it.
Money can also be hoarded by buying the money bags, so you basically convert your money into a money bag that you cant lose for a 10% fee.

Trick is to farm xp etc when you are close to a level and the next thing you meet is a boss. Just farm to the next point, spend your gold and go! And tbh if you think this is the reason to not play the game then i simply don't believe it Laughing

Well, for me it was Smile
I was laughing first with the amount of times I died, after the second mini-boss. Then after dieing once too many, I returned to the homestead, got the popup about rot, and the fun was over Laughing

There must have been a door there in the wall, when I came in.
Truly gone fishing.

It is the best From Software game for me. It has its flaws but overall it's really great.

The gameplay is superb, super exciting and gives more satisfaction than any other Soulsborne.

The game has actual plot but also has a lot of hidden lore stuff and it's not just item descriptions - the overhear and sake mechanics are really neat way to reveal such details.

The world is interconnected and the exploration is much more exciting because of the verticality and the hook.

Stealth is a nice alternative to just rushing through the same areas to the boss.

Overall - it's a very tight and crisp action game which is focused on it's core gameplay elements.
