Didn't think it's possible, but they managed to take an even worse turn with their DLC's (starting with their silly futuristic A3 setting, then the non-SP SP campaign with Apex, then that Laws of War nonsense..).
I'd uninstall the damn game a long time ago were it not for modders bringing the old campaigns back.

I quite like it. Also, the press release hints more towards human conflict as a result of this contact thing. Add in some alien Mystery and alien confrontation later in the campaign and it sounds like a cool idea for a DLC. Also, they seem To be going back towards eastern european roots with the new Terrain which is great. I'm pretty sure bohemia is smart enough to not sacrifice military realism even if sci-fi enters their realm.1
This is unique since it's not the usual "dumb shooter" with a generic sci-fi theme. How often to we see a tactical shooter with sci-fi elements?
It looks atmospheric too, unlike most games with this setting. Kind of like x-com in first person and real time I think this will be less silly than X-com though.
Do you guys just like this Sci-Fi concept in theory or you're actually confident that BI will do a good job with it?
IMHO, their campaigns are getting progressively worse in a way that I might relatively dislike something they release (e.g. Arma 1 campaign vs those earlier ones), only to later wish for at least a similar level when I find their later work to be even worse.
It's like they don't really care and have actually lost the compass completely, so they venture towards these "deeper" topics (e.g. Laws of War and now this).
Though, given their Arma 3 weapons, vehicles and helicopters, I guess these Aliens are not that big a stretch, but more like a logical expansion.

Indeed, when it comes to modern Bohemia-made single-player contents the situation is quite melancholic. I didn't dislike Arma 3's main The East Wind campaign, but once again it felt like a (giant) wasted opportunity where the true sandbox-y potential of the game remained underused, especially during the first painfully linear half. It's like owning a Lamborghini and using it only to go to the grocery store.
After the bland drop-in/drop-out oriented Apex I basically gave up, though I still enjoy the Dynamic Recon Ops/Dynamic Combat Ops mods from time to time since Arma 3's mechanics are just too satisfying. My framerate is still abysmal though :'(

True, but Arma 3 campaign wasn't made (or at least written) by BI directly, IIRC, but some experienced community mission creator(s). It looked like it took some direct hints from the original campaigns (like, let's copy what worked there), but it was rather scripted and linear, with missions having pretty limited scopes, IIRC. Plus, the already mentioned bland base futuristic setting with unknown forces (side ABC vs XKY) and invented weapons and vehicles didn't help the immersion at all, IMHO. I did play through it once, at least, meaning it wasn't bad per se, just wasn't anything exciting either.
I totally agree with the Apex comment. I installed it, tried the first mission, was shocked at how they considered that MP campaign to be "SP" and asked for immediate refund on Steam (and got it). Same for their karting DLC, weird helicopters DLC, etc. I refuse to support such fluff. I think I did get the Marksman one, though.
Long rant short, I'll eat my hat if this Aliens DLC turns out to be good, as experience tells me to expect some half-assed attempt at a pretty pretentious concept.
I guess I should buy this German Cold War campaign instead (even though it's not really good supposedly), to at least support the direction the modders took (realistic setting, plus Cold War).
yep that part sucks, i tried some user scenarios because i love the game but.. I have a powerful rig with custom water loops.. game runs at 10-15fps.
you have to run a simulation system mod like ALIVE or antistasi for full scale warfare/campaign. they do a pretty damn good job but arma really is not capable of simulating something as dense as d-day unfortunately.
I see Bohemia are releasing ARMA III 2.0 patch (that from patch notes so far it doesn't look significant). I havn't played this for a while has performance improved much?
Hopefully the new engine won't tragically choke whenever there are more than a few AI entities enabled, that's always been ARMA's Achilles heel and the main reason large-scale combat has been so difficult to reproduce. Mods such as the ALiVE one help, but only to a minor degree. Fingers crossed, it does look promising indeed
This part though:
