steam forums are on fire with whinging about kojima nobody wants this guy to succeed for whatever reason.
game looks pretty good both visually and mechanically, so long as you don't mind a slower pace.. it seems that most people just want to play another cod clone again and they probably don't even realize how simplistic that shit is compared to this 'walking simulator'.
as for the story, i'm sure it's inane but it's probably interesting if nothing else.
either way it doesn't look like kojima needs konami for anything at all. all that said, i don't feel like we are looking a particularly mass appeal game so i don't know if this will sell sufficiently on anything but kojima's name alone .

when you have to pull the cod card, that just means the game is hard to defend
what most people want it enough obfuscation so that fetch quests, which let's face it - is pretty much what almost all quests in games boil down to - don't feel like fetch quests
but this game is literally just a fetch quest
sure you have all this tiny systems that appear cool, but i can see them growing quite tedious when the game is focused on getting from point a to point b
the balance/stability/terrain thing sounds interesting, but only as a subsystem and not a main feature

i don't see the problem with the game being a hiking/transport simulator, it looks like it has plenty of mechanics to support that including combat not in the players favor. the only reason this game would be particularly hard to defend is the prejudice of being associated with the words 'walking simulator'.
i used cod as an example because some retard on the steam forums was bitching about the 'lack of combat' which i find hilarious.
personally i play a lot of tedious shit like eurotruck, elite and spintyres etc so i just have no beef with going from a to b so long as there is some depth, strategy or exploration factors. as i mentioned earlier, I don't think the game is for the masses in that it's too different (or bland if you will) and not action orientated. i guess that in itself is not that easy to defend, but i haven't even played the game so i'm not going to dig myself a hole here
Having seen the first 4 hours on a stream, the game seems intriguing enough. But I'm not really convinced of the visuals. Sure, the graphical fidelity seems high, but the world seems very bland and monotonous. There are supposedly a few different biomes, but the initial part at least is not exactly *pretty*.
There must have been a door there in the wall, when I came in.
Truly gone fishing.

To be fair, you have to have a very high IQ to understand Death Stranding. The symbolism is extremely subtle, and without a solid grasp of theoretical physics most of the meaning will go over a typical gamer's head. There's also Sam's nihilistic outlook, which is deftly woven into his characterisation - his personal philosophy draws heavily from Narodnaya Volya literature, for instance. The fans understand this stuff; they have the intellectual capacity to truly appreciate the depths of these allegories, to realize that they're not just stuff in games- they say something deep about LIFE. As a consequence people who dislike Death Stranding truly ARE idiots- of course they wouldn't appreciate, for instance, the meaning in Hideo's character naming such as "Die Hardman", which itself is a cryptic reference to Turgenev's Russian epic Fathers and Sons I'm smirking right now just imagining one of those addlepated simpletons scratching their heads in confusion as Hideo Kojima's genius unfolds itself on their television screens.
TWIN PEAKS is "something of a miracle."
"...like nothing else on television."
"a phenomenon."
"A tangled tale of sex, violence, power, junk food..."
"Like Nothing On Earth"
...As a consequence people who dislike Death Stranding truly ARE idiots...
You can't make a blank statement like that. First of all, even if one understands all the intricacies woven into the game, he/she can still not like the gameplay itself.
Second, the examples you give about the "intellectual capacity" required to understand the game are completely misrepresentative. If you just need knowledge of literature and art history and philosophy (as your examples suggest), well, that's hardly a precise measure of intellect.
And to conclude with a final point, I'd dare argue that complex games which require intellect to even understand and play efficiently (e.g., Europa Universalis 4, Stellaris) are better examples of games which will be mostly disliked by "idiots", as per your words.

He's trolling.

It's a copypasta originally mocking Rick and Morty pseudointellectual fanboys. I'm disappointed he didn't include the tattoo part.
Over 20 hours in and while the story and characters so far aren't very interesting to me, I find the gameplay quite amazing. It really feels different to anything I played and you could literally call it a walking simulator because of the way you have to pay attention to the terrain and plan your trip ahead.
The game requires patience as you start off slowly transporting back breaking amounts of cargo on foot, but this makes the gradual payoff much sweeter, as the sense of progression is really addictive. By the time you developed/unlocked new upgrades/vehicles/weapons around chapter 3, it feels like a new game almost.
The last game I played that gave me a similar satisfactory feeling of progression was Subnautica, which also starts off tedious and then slowly giving you so many tools.
I don't believe all the conspiracy about reviewers being paid off, after playing it, I can understand both the 6/10 and the 10/10 scores, all of those are legit, depending on what you look for in a game and whether you have the patience for it.
I bought it yesterday, but haven't played it yet. I'm not used to paying full prices for games, but since I'm in some kind of void recently where almost not a single game interests me, this actually seemed like something worth trying. Maybe I was wrong, but we will see
Gigabyte X570 Aorus Pro | AMD Ryzen 5800X3D + be quiet! Dark Rock 4 | KFA2 RTX 4080 | 32GB G.Skill Trident Z RGB DDR4 @3600MHz | Samsung 860 Evo 500GB + 1TB + 10TB WD Blue | Corsair RM750x | LG 27GL83A + LG 27GL850 | Fractal Define R6 | Razer BlackWidow Ultimate Stealth | DeathAdder Chroma
Story wise it's really interesting (everything is explained, so no "left me confused" stuff).
Game mehanics are okay.
The setting/mood is really awesome.
Enemies (human) steal your stuff:
They were after me, ran out of energy for my bike, had to ditch it, they stopped and started to loot my bike so I had to get the stuff back since it was a "story" related item.
Yea, I am playing on hard, there isn't much challenge enemy-wise, didn't die even once so far, the challenge comes from delivering the cargo intact and having it not stolen. Dealing with enemies is mostly very easy imo.

Well into chapter 5 now and the gameplay is so fucking addictive. All this stuff in theory shouldn't work, but it does. I came for the story, but stayed for the walking/hiking/transporting/infrastructure sim. I don't even care about the story at this point and just want to keep
Spoiler:
building out the motorway and connecting all the places in the mountains via ziplines
, the asynchronous multiplayer functions are really satisfactory.
I'm totally hooked on the game. Purchased it on the weekend and have nearly 30 hrs playtime thus far. This is the first game where I actually gave a shit about the story, well at least until I left the starting area. The asynchron multiplayer is very well made, the gameplay is awesome and there is so much more to do aside of just running the quests. Yesterday I built almost 4 sections of road all by myself, felt very satisfying to receive the likes afterwards and seeing people use my roads or other stuff I left behind.
Not in a rush to progress in the story. Doing a lot of side missions and just having fun all around.
Ah well at least we can mod the tedious shit out in the PC version, story is pretty much all i care about anyway i mean i might as well just youtube it but it's not the same as actually playing it for me.
