Pay $20, Pay $2000, or pay nothing, you get to choose.
Not much of a choice here tho. More like an illusion. I mean look at the prices for rental ship - the Freelancer, the lowest most diverse ship, is 3 million credits or something around that (or did they finally lower these ridiculous numbers in 3.8?). I have an Aurora LN and 29k credits. Missions give the "whooping" 300-400 credits and take at least 20 minutes with all the walking to terminals, picking your ship and reaching your destination. And that's if it doesn't bug and you go back to waking up. Trading gives a little more with the useless 3 SKU space on the Aurora LN. Shooting pirates takes super long time with this retarded ship, and it's supposed to be a "military" variant. Others who don't even have cargo, like the Mustang (except Mustang Alpha) are stuck with bounty missions with nearly useless weapons on this ships. That means for a good starting experience right now you need at least a Freelancer or a Cutlass which are $120+. Without such ship it takes 1000+ hours just to rent a Cutlass which will be wiped in few weeks. The better ships are almost impossible to get with playing. Doesn't make sense to restrict the players like this in an Alpha stage.
I don't see this as a choice. It's like if cars costed millions and you have the choice to either work hard for the money to buy a car or walk even harder to get somewhere. But maybe they really lowered the prices and that's not a thing anymore which I doubt.

Maybe the game is a huge grind, maybe its not.
Hard to make comments on the economy of a game that won't be out until late 2021 to 2022+

Which makes it worse. It's in testing phase and they don't let us test because they think people will be renting all ships instead of buying them with real money.
But your supporting the game by buying ships. That’s what I read on the in game chats all the time.
The only viable option if you don’t want to pay, is to wait for it to be released..
Seriously though the Jump 890 costs close to £1000 to buy and you can’t actually do fuck all with it, it has no purpose in game yet. Yet people are buying up this stuff.
I long ago abandoned any hope in the online game (anyone ask about private servers lately?), but I was hoping to at least get something half decent from Sq42 for my 50 bucks. Is this fucking thing now 50% FPS or something?

50% FPS, 40% cinematics and the remaining 10% will be reserved to simulative pressabutton-to-autodrive space business
Oy vey. I like how ~60% of the slated production is expected to occur between now and Q3 next year. So this thing is definitely not coming out until 2025. And yeah, a big FPS focus it seems. Blech.
Don't forget this game is aging.
I tested star citizen with my new rig and have no problem running it in 4k.
But the graphics are far from groundbreaking anymore. When it's ever released it will look ancient.
I can't say I see much of an improvement in graphics over the last couple years compared to earlier jumps in quality. It's basically about higher resolution. No point in even mentioning RTX but.. It's very rudimentary and doesn't revolutionize the looks of the game; it's affecting it while taking a performance hit. But lighting is still the #1 on the list of most importance to reaching hyper realistic/stylish looks. We're not there yet. Depending on when a Star Citizen/SQ42-game is released in a final shape I doubt it'll look ancient. Sure, if it takes almost another decade it will be grossly outdated but I don't see that happening. Not sure what I see happening beyond Star Citizen/SQ42 being remembered as a meme, an object of delectable sarcasm and unconfirmed scam.

Don't worry, they will move the game to a better engine and delay it another 5 years.

Great! More stuff delayed! What about gameplay loops though? 4.0 is not even out yet and you already delayed the most important one: Server to Client Actor Networking Rework. Desync and stuter is AWFUL right now, when playing with friends, every character jitters and lags.
With 2.5 months left til 4.0... I cant wait to see more and more stuff get removed from 4.0 until all the good stuff gets removed once again.
I mean Elevator panel update ? Really? A Nick Nack store at New Babbage - yeah right just what we all wanted for years.
also where is salvaging? wasnt that only supposed to be "temporarily removed" 6 months ago?
all of this was on the roadmap at some point, always being removed right before its scheduled patch:
Where are all the gameplay cards that have been on the roadmap and disappeared? so many community managers yet they only seem to like to talk to the "content creators" on twitch instead to us the real backers who paid money and support this project.

This is just a small selection. I’m sure somebody can check every card since 3.0 that they removed.
You had 5 weeks of "planning week" and yet stuff still gets delayed every week. At this point im just sad, mad and disappointed. Maybe I should not expect so much but when major gameplay loops are still missing in 2020 and instead we get new elevator somebody just has to ask : how out of touch with the commuity are the producers and management of this game?
Edit: People are seriously saying they are delaying stuff because of COVID-19? People who say that obviously havent been following this project for years and are trolling. I mean that makes no sense at all. Why did they remove salvaging last year then? And other gameplay features? How is that COVID-19s fault? First it was because they are planning for citizencon, then because they are focusing on SQ42 and now the excuse is COVID-19? You would think some people are so ignorant that they excuse every delay for years with other excuses in the comments under my post.
And yet there still those who firmly believe Roberts will Light The Way.
I wonder what would happen if he was unfortunate enough to die from Covid... maybe the game would be finished next month... (not that I wish ill health on anyone of course...)

Even the most hardcore fanatics from the church of Roberts are slowly starting to doubt their faith at this point, that's an achievement in its own hilariously twisted way

Feels like Roberts thinks he can make the game like World of Tanks was. Like WOT was in beta long after it really was not beta anymore but at least it felt like a feature complete game.
