Well to be fair in most games you're basically doing the same shit over and over again like a donkey following a carrot, so it's mostly about the experience. I just hope the story isn't some shitty Jap philosophical clusterfuck in the end.
There is an IGN story breakdown video, and that’s exactly what it is.
Playing or watching Jap things is like having sex with a massively fat woman. You just go in there and hope for the best, praying you won't be crushed to death in the end.
PS. I never take anything on IGN seriously btw

What do you mean by philosopical clusterfuck?
The story is good, everything is explained in the end. Of course it's your own call that you decide that "its bullshit", but that goes for all games/movies.

I haven't played it or watched any spoiler videos, so I reserve my judgement. But I want to point out that just because something is explained doesn't mean it's good or it makes sense.
I would say that often if something has to be explained in an extensive manner, it means that the story didn't convey the right amount of details. There are some good examples for this: D&D expaining every GoT episode ("Dany kinda forgot about the Iron Fleet"). Ridley Scott explaining Alien: Covenant.
I like the story very much. At the same time what Leo wrote is basically true. The difference is it a clusterfuck to you or do you rike it. The story felt complete, but since the guys above haven't finished i guess i'll should wait with the spoilers.
If you are a person who gets emotional, and likes to get emotional you will probably like the story. Not every story has to be badass (or make you fell like it). I value connection to the story and characters far more than that. Sam is pretty much a resigned guy, who cannot even die.
With DS everything gameplay-related really glues with the story. Empty world, people who don't even want to come from underground, people who don't really want to procreate or even live for that matter, Low Roar (and Silent Poets) music, the BB who meh at first and then create a connection (after a certain point in the game).
As for the story being coherent - it's the most coherent from Kojimbo actually
The problem is, for many, that some interseting bits are to be read and not watched in a cutscene (or enacted in the gameplay). I don't like that actually, reminds of MGS V tapes. But there were some interesting things - it's BAD that many of those are obtainable post-mortem. Especially Sam's wife's journal. Higgs' journal is great too.
Seriously though - from what i read a lot of people didn't grasp the story whole (who is the BB, what started the armageddon etc. - don't want to spoil some other stuff) and IMO that is crucial to judge the story.
And not that it's story related but the asynchronous multi gives the game a Nier Automata vibe, makes you think of other players and their toils. Even though it is not really story-related i think it does add to the world and lore.
Anyway, watching 15 minutes explanation of the story is not playing it. Hideovideo games were always (well from MGS2 onwards really) movies with gameplay but the things you do during the gameplay shift the way the story moves (or doesn't move) you.
Buildings help but they are more like a balm during hard days. You can play without them but you miss out on this coop-like idea. Turning off signs (because of the spam) might be good though. I ultimate didn't because i liked BB being happy when passing one that makes BB happy
Expect a lot more buildings in general (not just bridges obviously). Especially in the next map it makes the game come alive when first you see a barren land and then it becomes more and more civilized.
Go to chapter 3 ASAP, you will have access to many more toys for easier transportation. They improve the gameplay loop a LOT. The game turns from "i don't know if i can do it" to "hold my beer - i will deliver all this shit, just watch me haul 1/4 ton of packages"
When finishing chapter 2 you will be informed to wrap up everything before proceeding because you wouldn't be able to come back. Ignore it, you can easily come back and finish what you left.
Personally i didn't use vehicles though, i enjoyed trekking much more. Although i did enjoy building the highways for others
PS. Don't miss out on Adam Jensen as one of the preppers and the pizza missions (the latter story-wise) when you get to chapter 3.
well id say a lot of this games terrain has been purposely made difficult to traverse in order for people to want to build. So soon enough you'll appreciate them
With you attitude it's definitely pure GOTY experience Leo!
Go for it!

they made this game just for you.
Yes. I blew Kojima numerous times so he promised i will be able to build highways for others in the game. Also i received a deluxe likes package in-game. Mouth well spent!
Yeah, it does. Take the boat and chapter 3 will begin.
To go back to the previous part of the map you have to you use a certain character.
Spoiler:
Fragile and her umbrella in the private room
To get all the toys so the sailing gets smooth you have to do stuff in the next map (when you begin chapter 3). The best are the speed skeleton and, most of all, the floating carrier(s). The floating carriers rock because you can haul a shitton of stuff with them and they themselves can be folded and put on your back.
Is there any bigger purpose in running back and forth doing standard orders to get five stars, other than being a completionist? I don't really care about maxing out things. Do I get more tools and/or story if I connect every region? I assume you need 5 stars to connect some people.
One prepper gives you a tarp for the packages, pretty useful. But aside from that and 100%-ing there is no point.
I enjoyed hauling as much shit as i could - 'twas a part of the charm
There are also some preppers that give you repeatable rewards like especially good blood bags (fury road reference, right? ) from the doctor, or some guy gives your especially timefall resistant and light ladders, stuff like that.
Basically the best versions of items like that which you cannot craft and only get as delivery rewards from those guys.
They're not essential in any way but nice to have sometimes.
Maxing out some of the harder to get to people will usually net you upgraded gear for your backpack or weapons, but again, they're not essential.
Just do what you feel like doing and don't get too invested in leveling up any one specific thing or something unless you're enjoying it, because that's how the game gets less fun and frustrating.
Likot Mosuskekim, Woodcutter cancels Sleep: Interrupted by Elephant.
I have a strange relationship with this game. When playing I think it's very well done and I can even accept the repetitive gameplay, but nothing pulls me to the game when I stop playing it. I just don't feel the urge to really play it, but I do enjoy it while playing I never had this feeling before with a game.
Are the upcoming emotional scenes as shitty as the one with the junk dealer and the jap girl? Is that the level of quality I can expect? I feel like they wanted it to be this very emotional experience, but it was amateur hour IMO. I'm at chapter 3.
you unlock these weirdities in the msq and get on with your business if you dont care about them. i leveled up most though as i hoped for nice upgrades, but you can do without.
