They signed a contract. They didn't have to. You can be mad about the 30%, but then don't sign a contract with apple...

I see, so if you sign a contract under duress to be my slave, it makes that contract valid.

I agree with Sin... there's no duress here. Apple have a platform and have every right to require whatever stupid conditions they want in order to offer access to third parties. The clause about duress applies primarily to situations where you're, e.g., holding someone hostage, threatening them with violence etc.
I sympathize with Epic in this fight because it would have tangible benefits for the consumer, but based on what information I have seen I think that Apple is in the right.

Apple's mobile store makes the vast majority of money in mobile space. The duress is making much less money on mobile if you don't comply with Apple's racketeering contract.
Microsoft also had a "platform" and "had every right" to bundle Explorer and be anti-competitive. Oh wait, no they didn't, and were broken up by regulation. Apple's time should come too. Even if Epic's lawsuit fails, lawmaker is already breathing Apple's neck (based on the questions asked during the congressional hearing not long ago). Change is acoming.

Think positively. If Apple will kill half of the Fortnite fortune for Epic then they wont have money to buy PC exclusives anymore.
Win-win.
Well, we lose with Apple, since this will enforce their oligopoly even further but eh

Don't Sony and Microsoft take 30% or so as well on games on their respective consoles?

I wonder if Epic will try to pull the same stunt on the PS platform, lol. Which is probably their biggest market.

Probably, but I don't think Epic can retroactively revoke a license for games already made. And if they would threaten to revoke their license for future games, in order to bully e.g. Sony to let them "have their own store" or bs like that, it would probably be a massive shot in their own face.
People maybe like to work with UE4, but it's not the only engine and people CAN create a new engine, if the need arises.
Epic pretty much is playing itself into a corner at this point, imho.
They tried to bully steam, that doesn't seem to work out, they try to bully apple, not working out... I wonder how much money they really have to "brute force" this thing

I despise their actions, but I think Epic's battle against Steam is working on some level. I don't think there are many white knights switching to EGS just because of the revenue cut for developers. But Epic is certainly winning some people over with all the free stuff while forcing others with exclusivity deals to sequels and whatnot. It's also worth noting that the future will most likely look much better for them when the kids they got in their pockets with free games and Fortnite will grow to have some purchasing power.

I don't think so, if judging by Apple's reaction, Sony could just ban ANY developer using their Unreal Engine.
Plus I think Sony also uses Unreal for some games? |
You misunderstood what happened. Apple was threatening to revoke the Developer ID certificate of the Epic account, this not allowing the Unreal Editor to launch on macOS (because all apps must be signed and not revoked or else macOS won't allow launching software by default).

It's equally retarded. And it should be possible to sideload software on these machines. I do hope that some over-reaching legislation comes from this, where any device that allows digital purchase of software must allow third party sideloading from "unofficial" sources.

Well, he's just the normal self serving idiot who is preaching a "worthy" cause and is getting traction from that alone and people dont see it, which is normal. He'd be no different if he was a top player. No different at all.

Which is why after some grumbling no doubt he figured the tactic he'd use is to lure developers to his side and trick every god damned fool out there. Nothing but a ploy to get big.

Hm, I really like that analogy |
It's good that you are amusing yourself with completely unrelated analogies.
The correct analogy is having a country where only one store is allowed to sell all products, and no one else is allowed to open a store.
If you like it so much, move to North Korea, that's how it is there. It's amazing.

Spending money is not monopolizing. It's ugly business, but any developer can say "fuck off" and not take the money. I hate their buying off developers as the next one, but it's unrelated to this lawsuit here.
What Apple is doing is monopoly. The classic percentage that is often touted (that comes from the 18th century law) makes no sense in the context of modern mobile usage.

Does the monopoly Apple even have 20% of the phone market? No one is forcing anyone to buy Apple trash.

Yes. Instead of posting nonsense, how about you read any economic research on the subject? Whatever your opinion of Apple users is, they are much more likely (orders of magnitude) to spend money on their devices. This makes the "just don't develop on Apple platforms" a ridiculous stance that is divorced from economic reality. If a business wants to survive, it has to be on iOS. This is why regulation is important here.
If you don't want to buy Apple, don't. But it's a fact that you cannot change, that those that do buy Apple, are much bigger spenders.
