I had to reinstall Windows either way since I upgraded both CPU and GPU and had this one running for over a year now. So I just upgraded to Win11. And well, it runs smooth. Nothing that bothers me for now tbh. Its nothing major.

Is the GUI and start menu not as bad as it seems in the promos?
Perhaps it's my "change is bad! I want familiar" in me. But it seems each version of windows goal is to make the start menu icons larger and larger, with more dead padding space between them.
But then again, I think its my pickiness of I want it EXACTLY how I want it. now how you think I should have it.
For example I think "pin to start" is a backwards step from toolbars if I could remove that right click I would I click it too often trying to rightclick->close. IMO This is FAR better than pin (but you have to manually set it up in win 10 now).
-Top row is actually what is open. If its not running/open its not on that bar.
-Bottom is quick launch, I can sort them, group them into groups by 'what' they are, all sort of things. Like in the pic, left group is 'my' stuff. Right is work stuff.
Spoiler: | |
And the windows snapping to a size trying to figure out what I'm trying to do (vs letting me do it) when you vaguely get near the edge of screen is often more "I dont want that" than I DO want it to do it.
It seems windows 11 went farther away from what I like in both those areas.

MS doesn't outsource Windows development. They're mostly in and around Redmond. |
it doesn't feel like it tho. maybe the "base" windows, but everything which came with windows 8/10, let it be apps, the new settings and so on, all of this feels like they outsourced it.
like multiple teams and no one knows whats going on. if they all really sit in redmond then it's even worse.

So if a window is minimized (Say Discord) and you drag a JPG to the Discord icon at the taskbar, it won't pop the window up just like it happens in W10?

Ok, but its not just that. The context menu is now cut down to a few options MS thinks you mught want to use. All the rest are hidden behind another click.
Like you can "open" a RAR file by right clicking and selecting open. But the WinRAR options like "Extract here" etc. are hidden behind the next click. "Show more options".
Its ridiculous.

Windows 11 feels smoother and I like the icons in the middle of the taskbar on my UWQHD screen and the integrated multi-desktop feature. But thats about it. Windows is still a mess compared to MacOS and the 11 UI is as incoherent as Windows always has been or has become over the years. I'll probably keep it installed and get used to it.

Doesn't 10 have multi-desktop? I remember playing with it, but had no real use for it a while back.

Maybe it had. I cannot remember it being an obvious feature. On 11 it is prominent on the taskbar.

When you hit WIN + TAB you can also see the additional desktops at the top and move applications from your current desktop to others. There might also be keyboard shortcuts. I have never found a good use for this feature though. It think to me it seemed too cumbersome to move between desktops and similarly move apps around.

@Nui
Same, if I had one monitor I might see a use for it. But with an ultrawide and a 16:9 turned vertical on the side for discord, rainmeter, random websites for reference, etc; it's more work to move between them that just keep them on one monitor or the other.

This was a bug that was reported right after the beta test started, they didn't even bother fixing anything before release.
