The original Call of Duty actually had the type of passion you guys mention here. The devs said this:
"The project was actually named 'MOH killer' until an official name could be found," Thomas said. "We were focused more on fun than success, with the idea that if it was fun, it would be successful. We were just going to make a great game, and do the things better than we did on previous projects. The great thing is that a team learns from previous projects."
Warren Spector also said this about Deus Ex:
"It was the game i was gonna make somehow, someway, sometime and nobody was damn well gonna stop me. I didn't care if it sold three copies."
Bad ass. The best projects come out of this mindset
Just finished with the Lady Killer(made it to the ground floor). Took me about an hour to legit finish the level. Most of it is possible without noclip. Lived through few moments from the trailer !!!
This first section is not too bad. Modders can fix this for sure. Randy and George said there is nothing here ?! Fuck them. There is enough and we don't even have the last iteration of "2001" build

Yeah, it's pretty tantalizing to finally get our hands on this, vibes from the Doom 3 Alpha ! No wonder they never finished it though, feels like they couldn't finish anything at all playing this There are glimpses of something that could have been at least very good in 2001 standards.
Also getting some nasty polygon explosions too frequently to be really enjoying it

haha there are so many maps. Sure, very unfinished and ideas drafts but no wonder they never finished it. The game is huge. So many ideas.
And all the scenes from that trailer are included. Some as happening during normal level but also special scenes created as maps. So the whole trailer can be redone in 4k

THE TRUTH ABOUT DNF
MAY 10
WRITTEN BY SCOTT MILLER, APOGEE (FOUNDER)
Looks like someone leaked a build of Duke Nukem Forever from 2001. Anyone expecting much of a playable game will be disappointed. The game's brilliant trailer from that period definitely over-represented what was actually playable in the game.
(BTW, I have no idea who leaked the build or how they obtained it.)
DNF is the game that destroyed 3D Realms and ended up getting the company sold to an investor in Denmark (where it's still based). While our games like Max Payne and Prey were keeping the company afloat, DNF was a constant money pit for the company and eventually killed the original 3D Realms/Apogee.
IMO, while I was not part of the DNF project, as a company owner I had some good insight into the issues with the game's development.
We were always understaffed by at least 50%.
We did not have a good development roadmap (at least, I never once saw one), and instead the project was adlibbed too much.
Because of the game's slow development, when new 3D technology became available, the project--in effect--rebooted to make use of the newest tech causing massive delays over and over.
I recognized that DNF was in deep trouble back in 2004 and tried to get the entire game developed by a more experienced studio, Digital Extremes (now famous for Warframe). The owner there was eager to take over DNF from us, and we even had the blessing of our publisher at the time (Take-Two), but this idea was shot down internally. It turned out to be a fatal suicide shot.
In the end we worked out a deal to somehow barely save the project with Gearbox Software, and basically handed over the future of the Duke brand to them with the idea that they'd finish the game. A year or so later, it was released.
It's a very sad story no matter how you look at it. It brought 3D Realms to its knees, all of our development team left or was released, and the 3D Realms name is now owned by someone with no connection to our past.
I do hope that Gearbox can resurrect Duke Nukem at some point. It seems like the obvious move would be to recreate Duke Nukem 3D using Unreal 5. And if it does well, then start making more Duke adventures while also expanding the universe with new characters.
What engine were they using for this leaked version? I don't recall. I'll never forget that PCGamer magazine issue hyping the shit out of it, looked amazing.
Judging from the various footage/info the game had quite a few neat systems in place (even a pseudo-upgrade system) and a remarkable interactivity, as well as the crisp gritty visuals and tight controls typical of the classic Unreal. I didn't completely hate the gimped Duke that we got despite the heavy consolization, technical obsolescence and the many many many questionable decisions, but still. Truly one of the biggest what could have been(tm)

What's there to not accept? 100% of people can't love what they do 100% of the time And they need money. We'd need to abolish the whole structure of our society and create an utopia.
But I'm a grown man, I no longer believe in fairy tales
Neither do I, but I still get angry about it (imo, we could afford this utopia if we tried, but it's not going to happen ) from time to time

Utopia would only work until the first building needed to be built and it needs roofing, and garbage collection, and the toilet fixed when it gets backed up with shit.
I NEVER met a roofer out of dozens of them, that wanted to do that.
Then either:
If we go with everyone does what they love, no one would be around to do those things.
Or if we all pay them very well for it, the petty people with 'better' jobs would complain roofers make as much as they do (which they SHOULD get more actually..roofing SUCKS) but pecking order of humans going to be pecked at..you know.

"The DNF2001 Restoration Project was created roughly a day or two after the initial leaks by x0r_jmp. While starting off small, it quickly blossomed into an organized team the size of a small studio; boasting over 100 members in various positions at peak.
Current progress has been focused on finishing the polish for the first chapter of the game, 'Lady Killer' and working on a plethora of render and engine fixes alike; with many major and small fixes already developed, such as a proper 'hair fix' and progress on an entirely new renderer for the game in DirectX 9."

Honestly. Great marketing. If I were boussard I would exploit the hell out of this. Leak script. Leak concepts. Leak level designs. Let the fans finish the game. Give blessing. Gearbox might c&d it but it'll look bad on them. Heck if I were gearbox I'd let them finish it, then pay them a small fee for finishing it, and find a way to monetize it and release it on steam or epic. Heck get JJ to add more lines here and there. There's a lot of potential. A lot of good faith pr to be had as well.

But at the end of the day if they don't have any of the original developers directing the project, it'll just be some loose fan game which has very little to do with the game it was supposed to be at the time.
The fuck makes it a good thing if it’s free? Something is either good or bad or inbetween, regardless of price. You one of them “its furreeey so you don’t have the legal right to complain” clowns? Next you’ll be asking them to do better on their own or stfu.
