1998 vs 2023 , yes its a little prettier lighting , but no way it should eat so much fps ... , some of the lighting things unreal did on my voodoo2 3dfx with 8 MEGABYTE of ram was stunning aswel

You guys played Unreal recently? I tried last year but the shooting felt so terrible, I couldn't force myself to play longer than 30 mins.... twice. Don't think any graphics update can fix that.

Aye, that's how I recently replayed it. DX11 renderer, HD textures and Unreal Evolution on top of it for better feedback, encounters and balancing overall. They're all compatible with each other, there's a guide for the technicalities as well: https://steamcommunity.com/sharedfiles/filedetails/?id=2276457084
It doesn't drastically change the gunplay so if you dislike the vanilla experience, the mod (probably ) won't change your mind, but it's definitely a nice improvement. Although the game objectively drags a little in some later parts, I found its atmosphere, complex level design and music very much timeless.

i never liked it SP campaign even at time of release. always felt bland, cuz it its bland, tons of shooters did it better, more atmospheric, more climatic, simply better. then i think about it basically every shooter had more interesting campaign than unreal rotfl
What's with the disrespect for this classic over here ? Weapons are hit and miss, some levels are so obtuse you'll go in circles forever until you find some fucking switch well hidden somewhere. But the ambiance, the atmosphere and that skaarj AI is top tier. It's a bit different than its contemporaries in thats its more subdued with the action. More meditative. You're soaking in the atmosphere and enviroments more often than in other games. It's also probably the last great classic FPS before Half Life killed the genre a few months later. At least for a few years after.
Pretty much every magazine i've read was enamored with the game at the time. Best single player campaign in an FPS to date, they all thought.
The atmosphere and the AI were definitely the highest notes - aside from the graphics that was the #1 reason for the hype surrounding Unreal by a very, very long shot.
The rest were all pretty forgettable to me, I don't enjoy the gunplay in this a whole lot - perhaps mods will make it better, but I don't recall enjoying this SP campaign a lot either. While maps were well constructed, I have trouble remembering anything from them.
Might give it a try later on but nostalgia is usually what fuels these kind of replays, and I don't have much of it for Unreal - and I always was a Quake boy back then too, sue me ! I think you pretty much had to pick your side between Unreal/UT and Quake back then, it was much like picking a favourite sports team

the SP was pretty garbage, but MP was solid, no clue how it plays today, i don't really play shooters, if i do i play games like SS2 which has even more terrible gunplay (i assume) so meh, i could probably play it if the campaign was very memorable.
No, the MP was not solid. It was literally the complete opposite. The singleplayer was universally praised everywhere. As posted above, that impression was universal at the time. And the multiplayer code was so bad that Unreal Tournament was actually born from their desire to fix the shit multi that Unreal had. They initially started work on what was supposed to be some sort of add-on focused on fixing the multipleyer, but later as they got their bearings, evolved into a new project that was Unreal Tournament

imo unreal SP was as bland and vanilla as it gets. duke, quake, blood, hexen, shadow warrior, doom, turok - all had more character, balls, atmosphere, werent so bland like unreal sp.
same year half life 1 was released, just few months later, and it destroys unreal sp campaign totally. heck, even avp1 had more character and was waaay more insteresting back in a day, as imo 1st gread depiction of that universum in 3d game. later on after that there were a ton a gigantic wave or more interesting SP in fps.
i remember being blown away by the engine and graphics but world felt meh, alien felt generic, tons of pointless empty spaces and so on. definitely not top fpp SP campaigns of that era
SP did have the cool moment where the lights go off one by one, i guess it's at least 1 memorable thing from the SP, but nah, really weak campaign but fun MP maps. i always preferred the unreal maps over quake.
Noticed randomly this mod got released 3 days ago. Looks fantastic, god damn It seems it's the same dude who did FEAR Mmod and Half Life 2 Mmod, which are phenomenal and my prefered way to replay them ever since i first tried them. Forget the ray tracing mod, this is the good stuff. Gonna try it later today
Nice, those mods are excellent - especially the Half-Life 2: Update + MMod combo
I'd also recommend Brutal Half-Life, it's still in beta but it makes the gunplay exponentially meatier with dismemberment/particle effects, ADS mechanics and even some weapons ported from Quake.
Oh man , i can see gaben coming at doritos awards with the HL3 announcement
Don't think the dev team have been able to put something together good enough for HL3. Hope valve still have some veteran Devs, new gen are seemingly hopeless.
Their official statment with the base hl1 update is that they "want to forget HL source ever existed, and they recommend people to play the original hl1".
