I doubt I'll make another one tbh. It made ~$32k in the first month but it's only going to trend down (quickly Laughing ). The time / effort investment isn't worth it. Still kind of cool to have made something that appears on Steam and GOG!

Effort is very commendable! After all we're all here (mostly) for the same shit... videogames! Maybe keep it as a side thing? While you're doing other more profitable things if you feel it that way?

Profit always going to be a struggle with an indy adventure title. That said you did a good job with the game. You get all the experience and confidence building and publishing a title, Pax experience for your portfolio and hopefully the contact network expanded.

If you were able to to do it partially keeping a day job it's not too bad.

Very positive reviews and on first game too, congrats! I'd definitely continue, now you have the experience, i'd continue to grind for sure, but only if i would find it at least somewhat fun. But yes i bet its a lot of work. Nice to have an income from it every month too, yes, even if it will degrade over time..

Solo Indy project is gonna be v.hard. The genre, flavour of the month and controversy are the weapons of choice. While crowdsourcing is amazing, it's very hard if you don't have brand / public reputation. A lot of people today have snapped up the opportunities for those cult classics as well.

Xcom - xenonauts
Dungeon Keeper - war for overworld.
SimCity - a million pretty piss poor clones.
Any Retro FPS - getting saturated
Minecraft - gazzilion clones, terraria being the best.
Diablo - saturated

That would be my thinking anyway, clone a hidden gem and make it fresh or bank off the brand as a spiritual successor.

After publisher split, Steam tax and Aussie tax I MIGHT see just under $10k. That's in AUD as well, so ~$7,000 USD

Calculating it at an hourly rate, I worked at $0.13 per hour for ~5 years

It's lucky it was enjoyable, otherwise I'd probably be on a cliff somewhere right about now. I'm going to blow that $7k on something fun

~3-4 years full time after I left my job, maybe more. It's hard to quantify at this point

You say "publisher split", and I wonder, what was the contribution of the publisher? Did they have a financial stake? Or did they otherwise make any meaningful action to help you in the publishing of the game? Or is it the kind of protection racket of the "give us moneys and be with us or else"?

He contributed $10,000. He earned 50% of sales until he made that back (which he has), and now his split goes to 10%. He has organised a lot over the years (applying to PAX, GOG etc)

FYI Leo, you were the only person in the world to personally donate to the project Very Happy <3

Cheers mate!

Don’t look at this adventure as a failure. Even if not financially successful, it sure in was fuel for the soul, of which we need a lot in our profession. And it will keep on giving, because you have something to be proud of.

It's not all bad. Last month, it made about 15k, which allowed me to upgrade a few things and buy some happiness (i.e., gadgets I don't need). It obviously isn't going to happen every month but it's a nice ebb and flow Very Happy

But yeah, it can't all be about the money. I genuinely like making stories in any form.

We're also giving away 100k keys to charity soon, and I will likely make the game free some time next year. From there, I'll just build small episodic things in my spare time

Doesn't take much to get a devkit from Microsoft!

It's pretty cool (and very heavy)

Nothing I had to sign, but I shall check

Can't wait to test it, I just read up about them and it sounds like it's more powerful than consumer models + has loads of profiling tools

Yup. Devkits are always more powerful. The XSX devkit has 40GB ram for example.

I guess it's because you're working with unoptimised builds.

Anyway better check what you can or cannot do, Microsoft can brick it remotely Laughing Happened to the unit sent to Gamers Nexus, it will stop you even from playing offline disc only games Laughing
