All kidding aside, I very much look forward to whatever the Fromen are cooking. It's one of those cases where more of the same is perfectly fine, at least until they'll raise the bar again with the next full-on entry - assuming that the company will stay true to its roots and immune to future derpifications.

I started replaying this and I stand by what I said two years ago. This is the most overrated From Software game to date.

While the story is intriguing, the art style is great and souls combat is desirable over most systems. There are a huge amount of problems ranging from copy paste content to pacing, gimmicky design for plenty of encounters, the unfixed performance issues, various inconsistencies and many other.

On top of this list come the usual issues that have never been fixed (and probably never will): UI design, m&k controls (combination of keys that you can't even rebind, lol), dated graphics, unreliable camera, wonky platforming, enemies hitting through walls and queued actions.

I'm glad they are going back to the roots with the world design in the DLC/expansion. Having a more compact world should make for a less diluted experience as the many redundant dungeons and boss battles in Elden Ring prove that less is more.

Sure it has flaws (what doesn't?), to me it's the pinnacle of From Soft and definitely one of the best games in recent years. I'm even enjoying it now more while replaying than I did for the 1st time near launch as back then the balance was all over the place.

yeah the level design alone, some of the best i've ever encountered in a game. the other stuff is shit you find it 99% of *all* games, and especially so in open world games. I mean "copy paste content", seriously?

Can't wait to play it again.

There are some cut & paste dungeons/dungeon design. But the main "maps"/areas are really really good.
Can't wait for the DLC.

yes, but i mean that goes for every open world game in existence.

It's easy to complain about stuff and make up some kind of dream game in your mind and compare to that vision, but i think games should be compared to what's been done perhaps. If not every game is like a 2/10 Wink

I thought Elden Ring was decent for open world.. I think I got 60/70% through the game though, like the latter half was a lot weaker than than the first half.

I remember the level design got pretty bad once you reached that swamp / water area and beyond..

It does get gradually worse with vaster areas that contain very little and which often look even more dated. Limgrave and Liurnia are probably the most magical.

Guys try the Convergence total overhaul for ER if you haven't already, and if you played previous versions give the new update a try. It's amazing.

https://www.nexusmods.com/eldenring/mods/3419

List of changes -

https://docs.google.com/document/d/1rvcP_7oZBSXj1dDVrmhwYTV8py8N9sZU1lPxayNIF7c/edit#heading=h.zgvptfbwxia8

Two changes I liked in particular are the change to resistances in the end game that make it more Faith build friendly, and the ability to parry Malenia's waterfowl attack(she has two variants of waterfowl in this mod.)

Going back to Vanilla to prepare for the DLC will be hard. Laughing

Could have been the GOAT had they cut off about 30% of the open world crap and instead expanded upon Raya Lucaria-gaddamn that area was so cool. And finding it was fun, seeing it off in the distance all the time in Liurnia.

The mod I mentioned above redesigns and expands Raya Lucaria and also adds a new NPC and different boss instead of that stupid magic spamming fox.

It's my least favourite area Sad
The music is odd and the shallow water and layout are weird, mens

Stormveil Castle was my favorite by far, but there are so many cool areas in the game, there's nothing in it that i truly disliked really.

I just love how dangerous it feels. Bethesda could learn a thing or 100 from these guys.

It's my favourite SP game of the past decade, really - maybe not the best per se, but the one I enjoyed and got into the most.
I love the lore, it's my kind of obscure jam, the gameplay loop is satisfying, it's brimming with content (some of it is copy/paste in terms of assets/enemies, but the layout never is, I don't find it to be an issue even though I wish the mini-bosses' iterations for Caves/Tombs had more variations, that felt lazy)..

As for my favourite area ? It's a tough one, Elphael was reaaally pretty but it has to remain Limgrave, as dumb as it sounds. It's quite generic and overall very "normal" compared to the rest but this starting area managed to hook me in quite instantly Very Happy When you return back to it later in the game, it almost feels like home Laughing I reckon its eerie background music has something to do with it too Razz

I honestly have a hard time finding one location that I didn't enjoy, the variety in terms of layouts coupled with the godlike aesthetics almost constantly rubbed me the right way. Perhaps Leyndell's samey sewers or Lake of Rot for obvious reasons, but they both have a reason to exist in the cursed Eldenian world Very Happy

One of the best feelings was going from wandering through the Limgravelands to clearing Stormveil Castle to discovering the elevator down to Siofra River with its mysterious atmosphere, that's where the game started showing its muscles design-wise and I knew that I was in for a great ride.

Discovering Siofra River through clueless exploration was definitely a huge "Woaaah" moment, indeed ! I was genuinely wondering where the fuck I was. Took me some time before I realised you could still teleport to Graces above ground while underground, though. That was painful Laughing
I had no clue there'd be underground locations like those, and the surprise delivered. Wish the Deeproot Depths had been more fleshed out though, but the Fortisaxx boss fight more than made up for it Razz

The areas people routinely despise the most tends to be the Mountaintops/Consecrated Snowfield, but I found them small enough not to overextend their welcome ! The blind parts were rather short too, nothing awful like I'd heard of.
If anything, I was glad to start struggling by that point in the game, otherwise it had been a very manageable experience up to that point. The Haligtree was the first time I thought "Ah, now we're really talking FromSoftware-levels of difficulty". All in all, I found the endgame to be very enjoyable too. Smile

The classic starting blunder ! Good on you for owning him though Very Happy That'll make for a good training, you should breeze past this area thanks to it Razz

More of a "what the FUCK is going on" moment than a "Woahh" one, but yeah, encountering that tower was fucking hilarious Laughing Got me a while before I understood what the hell madness did, other than making me grab my head Very Happy
The Windmill village above solidified the idea that things were not going well at all at Altus Laughing
