Publisher Electronic Arts and developers Bit Reactor and Respawn Entertainment have announced Star Wars Zero Company, the Star Wars single-player turn-based tactics game first teased in January 2022, for PlayStation 5, Xbox Series, and PC. A release date was not announced.
A full reveal is planned for the “Bit Reactor Developer Panel featuring Respawn Entertainment and Lucasfilm Games” panel at Star Wars Celebration Japan on April 19 from 16:30 to 17:30 JST. The panel, hosted by Lucy James, will feature lead developer Bit Reactor, along with Respawn Entertainment and Lucasfilm Games, who will share a world-exclusive first look at Star Wars Zero Company.
Meh. Star Wars games have been meh since Kotor II (2004). Jedi Fallen Order/Survivor were okay but they're light entertainment. The publishers just don't know how to handle the licenses; so many title have either been cancelled or given to developers that aren't up to scratch to develop games of such magnitude.
~Cleaned up the thread a bit and moved the discussion to the Void~
Anyway, judging by the leaked info/screens and the devs' previous experiences, it definitely looks like a Star Wars-themed XCOM - which is fine, I guess, as long as EA doesn't meddle in the dumbing down department even further. [No strong feelings one way or the other]
Xcom 2 wotc is in my top 3 of fav games of all time.
Might be interested if this comes anything near xcom2 in terms of fun/gameplay.
The last game that kinda scratched that itch for me was troubleshooter abandoned children but it is still to different and quality wise lacking.

I really liked Gears Tactics.
Granted, it doesn't have the base management portion, but the tactics part was super fun.
Waiting?
Why are you applying real-time logic to turn-based? It's in the name, TURN based. Each turn is a slice of time which you micromanage. Time is step based. You are not waiting, you don't the initiative window until its your TURN.
I love turn-based since it's the exact opposite of real-time, the anti-version. Completely new gameplay designs emerge, careful planning etc. Nothing has to do with reflexes.

Chess would be so much better if you could just play without waiting for the other player.

Well, on a computer the opponent can at least be faster
it would be interesting applying the reverse logic for Real-Time, e.g a fast MP shooter "what the hell dude, i was standing still here, minding my own fucking business, carefully planning my next move and you fucking SHOT me??! DUDE, it was my turn!"
It’s the graphics that are the problem. Chess doesn’t have elaborate interpiece animations. Here, they are using unreal angina to simulate realistic graphics and animations, so it looks retarded. A bunch of units standing around, waiting for a grenade to be lobbed at them, which doesn’t tear them apart, doesn’t spread each individual member of the unit out; no, just *poof*, some bars go down and now whoever threw the grenade is waiting for their turn to get shot at without moving. This disconnect is what makes it retarded for me. Just like “dice” “rolls” in RPGs. The animation hit is the same, the location of the hit is the same, the reaction of the hit is the same, but some retarded random number generator will decide how much to lower them bars. Fuck off. These are all outdated mechanics from different eras combined with pretty graphics because otherwise games won’t even sell the tiny niche numbers they do now.
I am fine with chess, RISK-style grand strategy games, etc., which simulate the board games they are based on. And even then, I always thought the Total War games did the most graceful uplift of a board game by using a RISK-style map and grand unit control, while jumping into modern graphics with modern gameplay mechanics in the actual battles.
