I am a big Obsidian fan. KotOR II is one of the all time greats. NWN2 MotB was stellar for me back in the day. So naturally I keep hoping and I played this game - only to abandon it a couple of hours later. Atrocious.
BUT! I want to use this thread (as well) to advocate for a game I just found a couple of weeks ago: Tainted Grail: the fall of Avalon. It is everything Avowed should have been, but wasn`t.
Really good. If you felt Avowed is woke slop, but would have otherwise given it a chance, if it were written and designed like Obsidian games of old - then Tainted Grail is the game for you.

I'll give it a go.
"Enlightenment is man's emergence from his self-imposed nonage. Nonage is the inability to use one's own understanding without another's guidance. This nonage is self-imposed if its cause lies not in lack of understanding but in indecision and lack of courage to use one's own mind without another's guidance. Dare to know! (Sapere aude.) "Have the courage to use your own understanding," is therefore the motto of the enlightenment."
Tainted Grail suffers from the same major issue that people in this thread say Avowed suffers from. The starting area is the only good area, everything afterwards is just lower quality padding.
Yeah, but the first area in Tainted Grail is stronger than the first area in Avowed. Both games are flawed, but expectations come in to play when judging a game. Also, The big difference is that, at least for me, Obsidian feels like they're not trying to make something special, or memorable, but something safe. And intent matters a lot to me.
I don't know, when you played Tainted Grail. I am finding out about it just now.
All I can say is: I very, very rarely 100% a game. Almost never. The last open world I did that with was Witcher 3. Don't misunderstand, this is nowhere near, BUT! I am 100%ing this.
The lore, the writing, mood is what drives Tainted Grail for me. Exploration is rewarded with lore. And even though I played the heck out of both Pillars of Eternity games, Avowed was just shit in the Lore and writing department.
This game is also a mature game, whereas Avowed is a child`s game.
Back to the original point: I just finished the second act (the biggest one). Early reviews said it was filler content. Didn't feel like filler to me. Full of good side quests and secrets to discover. For me at least.
Still liked Act2 in Tainted Grail. Did almost every quest in both. But got a bit burnt out for the 3rd and just rushed it to the end.
It's still one of the best Elder-Scrolls-like game, imo.
Don't know about Avowed, but looks shallow, like The Outer World.

Devs are actually constantly updating the game. They're adding content, right now Act 3 is being reworked with fixes and there's a free DLC coming with new content for it.
I actually liked Avowed, but it feels like a sterile corporate by-the-checklist game. Tainted Grail is a passion project (which thankfully sold well enough).

Playing Tainted Grail right now and it shits all over this from a great height.
Great game, will definitely buy.

The atmosphere and unique lore alone already put Tainted Grail levels above Avoid, then its dynamic combat system not designed to accommodate arcade Playmobil gamers does the rest. My only issue with The Arthur Scrolls was that ultimately its structure and progression didn't feel as rewarding as the big boys Morrowind, Gothic or Enderal - mainly because corners had to be cut (also in terms of presenting a truly organic open world) and as a result, the experience became a marker-clearing routine at some point. Still, it's great that the devs are continuously improving it after the undercooked release, and I hope there will be a Tainted Grail 2 which I'll be looking forward to.
