I'm not sure what your problem is, but CachyOS is absolutely suitable for a desktop environment usage. I watch movies, play games, browse internet, read books and comics, edit documents and honestly Windows can suck my dick at this point. I have a dual boot set up but I have only booted Win 10 once since transition to set up an extended support thing but didn't have a need to do it because I couldn't do something in Linux.

The system is stable it does what I need it to do and when I need it to do. Everything works out of the box. There are no issues with any hardware I'm using. I'm not an average Joe and I have been using Linux on an off in the last 25 years (but not in last ~8 or so). I'm not scared by terminal or small tinkering and stuff but I didn't need to do anything like that at all here. I was prepared for a distro hopping (using Win 11 is out of the question for me) but it just works

Also when looking for a distro I immediately disqualified any immutable systems, but this is a safe option for people that don't know what they are doing so I appreciate there is a choice like that for them.

But If you want something more stable, sure go with more stable choices. There is plenty to choose from. If you don;t use Linux yet just try it. You will be surprised how good Linux got especially if you haven't use it in a while like myself.

Ok one small rant, Vulkan shaders compilation is an utter BS that pisses me of when I just what to quickly open the game and have a quick session. So I update my system maybe once a week so nvidia drivers stays the same and fresh shaders compilation is not needed.

Overall, I don't see me coming back to Windows ever again (for private usage). And yes I'm waiting and will buy Steam Machine day-1 to support Valve and everything that makes Linux more mainstream choice.

So you update your system once a week and don't see a problem? Laughing I don't update Windows for months apart. That's how convenient Windows used to be.

Yes, if you don't do much on your PC, those are fine distros. The more you need to do stuff, the more issues they present.

You can enable background Vulkan shader processing in Steam settings, but know that it has cost in CPU usage when not gaming.

It is not like you are force to do it. Linux won't bother you with updates you don't even need to ignore anything as, unless you check it manually, you won't even know there is an update. Such freedom is refreshing Smile

But also updates are bloody fast. Even with 100 packages to update it takes just a minute or two (probably less then it takes Windows to only check if there are any updates at all).

I'm not naive. I know there are still a lot of barriers for common folks the biggest being lack of PCs/Laptops with preinstalled Linux (hence my big hope for Steam Machine). But unless you have to use a piece of software, or play a game, that just need Windows to work, it is a solid choice. It makes me smile seeing statistics with number of Linux gamers steadily rising in recent years. Competition is always good for us as consumers and MS became to comfortable being the monopoly for so long.

And as of Vulkan shaders, I know I can turn this background thing, but random CPU spikes to 100% are even more annoying to me. If There was an option to limit CPU usage I would for sure use it.

Investigate which process does it and limit that process to a few cores.

It’s not random. It happens whenever the driver changes and the shader ABI has changed. So you should know whenever that happens.

You mean Ubuntu (or Mint), though my personal favourite is Fedora.

Other that the VERY limited use I had for my last job. And I mean "I know sudo and a handful of commands I need" I don't touch linux.
Until windows can't do what I need it to (or starts doing things I don't like) sticking with it.

We will see what win12 is like. Skipping 11. But also skipped 98 [went 98se], ME, Vista, Win8, (that tick tock of windows: If this version is good, I won't like the next one). See if it holds.

Installed CachyOS mens... now what?
I want to play my totally legally acquired games, how do I go about that?
There are loonix AMD Drivers on their site, what else do I need besides those?
Also, on the cachyOS startup menu, on the apps/tweaks group there's an "Instal Gaming packages" option, is that all I need?

But looking on apps there's nothing for wine/proton; but on the repo tab there's tons of wine and proton stuff:

Do I need any of those?
Any useful guides? I mean I'm not sure thenre's many utubers out there guiding you on how to play S.T.A.L.K.E.R. 2.Heart.of.Chornobyl.Ultimate.Editon-InsaneRamZes on your loonix instalation Laughing

Why not just add it as a non-steam game in the Steam interface? It should just woke if you have all the Proton stuff installed.

This
https://wiki.cachyos.org/configuration/gaming/
with the already mentioned "install Gaming packages" from here

Were enough to do some of the heavy lifting.
That and a friend's help, already got stalker 2 running there, shame that it cannot into NTFS partitions so I'll have to move game folders from the win NTFS to the loonix btrfs in order to play shit. Maybe some loonix loon with AI can finally come up with something to just "read" from NTFS on the fly, but without any issues

If you mount the NTFS partition as read-only, it should be fine.

Lots of shit to say in just one post but it turns out that the Heroic Game Launcher has no issues adding "totally legal for realz" versions from my dedicated games SSD (NTFS partitioned) and running them so far; just a bit of trickery is needed to then copy the user/appdata/local/<game> folder to the correspondent folder on the HGL corresponding WinePrefix subfolder and that's it, all your progress and settings imported.
Now, I've barely scratched the surface playing so I dunno if there are really stability and crash issues but HGL seems to be using the "proton-cachyos-slr" Wine Version while explicitly ignoring the Valve Proton versions, so maybe the one used has less problems with NTFS? Only time (playing) will tell.

However what I wasn't expecting was the performance increase, but then again running a 6yo win10 pro install might have been a small factor, no (fucking retard Laughing)?
In STALKER 2 tried several sites, especially in the Burnt (and Red) Forest that use to hit performance a bit and there was none of that, so next up I knew I had to try the P4P shit performance champ, Oblivion Remastershit (cracled 1.0 released version BTW). The results where astonishing AYUND that was even using higher settings (Lumen RT set to High) as the usual Imp City - Chorrol 250 speed sprint test is just so much smoother and at a near constant 60 FPS, just amazing.

Already imported most of the stuff but now still need to figure out lots of stuff, especially regarding the installation of those "totally legal for realz" releases that come with a windows installer. HGL DOES have a "Run Installer First" option so maybe that's enough? And I still have the other recommended Lutris Launcher to check too, in regards to the install win executables, running games and whatnot.
So many shit to test, so little time during the week Sad
Will still keep the ol' win10 around but most of the time I'll just be on the linux side.
