kenny64, stick with XP until January at least, no point in upgrading.

It depends. If you use your PC mainly for gaming, driver support in Vista is not that good for the time being. If you don't play much, Vista is superior to XP in just any way possible. Once you install it, you won't miss XP at all.
I'd recommend dual-booting, until proper drivers arrive, and software companies update their software to support Vista.

So should I stick this on the laptop? I don't really use it for gaming (Maybe the odd game of CSS) I just want an performance increase...
Specs :
Intel Pentium 4, 3000 MHz (15 x 200)
ATI Mobility Radeon 9000/9100 IGP RS300M 64MB
448 MB RAM
Audio Adapter ATI SB200 - AC'97 Audio Controller
Network Adapter acer IPN2220 Wireless LAN Card (192.168.2.2)
Any ideas on how this would cope, And what driver issues will I have? (GFX Card?)

CSS works awful on vista. VPN begin reconnecting everytime and window flashes on alt-tab.

Suprised that CSS runs crap, Since its not really that much of a demanding game. I'm not really bothered about the gaming aspects of the OS, More interested in how the overall performance compares to XP.
Since XP's performance on the laptop is shit, I was wondering if I would see an improvment by upgrading to this.

I've got similar specs on my laptop and it runs pretty well . . . but it's a resource hog so don't expect it to perform better with less than 1GB of ram.

Yes - you can choose between Vista and Xp. The software installed on the XP hd can sometimes be used directly in vista - but many programs use the register for information so they wont be able to run unless you install them in Vista too.

When booting, Windows doesn't care about drive letters. It cares about HD and Partition numbers, which aren't moddable. Use VistaBootPro to edit the Vista boot manager to read the old Boot.ini and then edit Boot.ini to point to XP. |
O'Rly? Is that why Windows couldn't find D:\WINDOWS\hal.dll? And when I changed the drive letters in Partition Magic, and switched active device. It suddenly could?
Thanks for your desinformation.

I can't see how this is true, as every windows has drive letters set in the registry. When you change drive letter in one Windows installation, it doesn't change it in other installations.

I have found this interesting thing on keznews.com:
"Ok this is what I did before I did a clean install in my computer I ser my bios date to 2099. I did a full system install formated my harddrives and everything. After I got into Vista then I changed the date back to the right date. I have been running the RTM version from this site now for 2 days and I still have 30 days left for activation. And I have gone towww.microsoft.com and have downloaded programs that need the Geniun Validation and it validtaed and let me download the file I needed. So I am having no problems or worries about the activation. Everything is working just fine. I did the same thing when I would download a Win XP version and I used it for almost a year and it was still saying 30 days left for activation and was able to download from the microsoft site with no problems and all updates worked!! I hope this will help alot of you out that have been worrying about the activation. I am a computer technician been working with computers for 13 years and that was one trick I learned from Microsoft themselves when I would work on computers!!! "
I think it should work.

The guy said on another post that you have to set the real time inside Vista after you installed it and then also the bios time should be back to normal.

so, just to be clear:
1. change bios to 2099
2. install vista
3. change date to normal in vista
4. change bios to normal
is that the correct way?

I don't care about what you -think-, the reality is that the VISTA install fubars the drive-lettering if you install it outside of eg. a present XP-installation (such as booting from the CD, and hoping it will work).
I installed VISTA again from within XP, and it kept the drive-lettering.
No amount of talking you do will make what I experienced first-hand not reality.
