I'll certainly agree on that. The first murder shown, where they have that man in a noose and one of them strangulates him with it while the other stabs him...

The beginning was excellent I thought, up until it became a typical slasher movie the atmosphere had the kind of dread thats rare in modern horror movies.

AvP - 7/10
not nearly as bad as i remember, the story was pretty cliche "nosy humans go to see stuff and get fucked" but thats what AvP is all about. Preds using humans as hosts so they can hunt.
AvP 2 looks awesome. looks like it sticks more to the comics and even has the alien/predator hybrid (predalien) that was at the very end of AvP. Adn by the looks of it, this same character makes the pred ship crash back on earth because he comes out then fucks the ship up or something. anyway, looking forard to AvP 2.

Stardust 8/10 - I'm not sure how it will age but i'm sure i loved it today. I've heard people describe this movie as not just a fantasy movie and basicly they are wrong. This is just like a fantasy-book whom usually has it's fair share of romance and so on. I recomend this movie to everyone (even if you don't like LoTR you will like this movie as many fantasy-fans don't like LoTR)

Halloween (2007) 8/10

Dead creepy/disturbing to begin with then turned into your classic slasher, albeit a Rob Zombie slasher. One of those that you dont enjoy while your watching but do once it has finished if that makes sence.

Good performance from Malcolm McDowell.

I quite liked Alien Resurrection. Shotgun through the chest was cool Very Happy but Humalien was a let-down. Only thing was, it had all been done before right down to alien sucked out Razz into space. Man if I had a buck for every time they used decompression in sci-fi movies to solve their problems. Very Happy

the first HALF of resurrection was kinda ok

i hated the human alien yeah that was crap

but i ABSOLUTELY hated super-ripley... it just completely pissed in the face of what was so important about the previous 3 films, ripleys vulnerability but determination in the face of the aliens... having her freakin invincible was not only a shit idea, but id hardly even concider it worthy of being an alien film.

Alien Ressurection... yes, I love the unique style of Jeunet and the upgraded look of the aliens (altho I hated the human alien), but this was just a shotgun-blasting movie filled with one-liners, nothing more.

5/10 for style.

Alien3 rocked, as it was closer to Alien than Aliens. But I imagine fans of Aliens didn't like Newt being killed off early. In any case, Alien3 is a very much underrated movie.

i think people hate a3 because its popular to hate it. i mean art design and direction and cinematography can NOT be faulted... the use of desaturated colour and lots of browns and yellows set a mood completely unlike any of the previous films... as far as the story goes, i think it was completely unique from the previous films so you can hardly say it was a retread of previous films, plus the acting was really great...

i think the only weak point in the film were the visuals, but the budget was lower, the producers were fucking everything up left, right and center, and finchers fast alien required a completely different approach to the visuals, so you couldnt just shove a man in a suit for the bulk of the film... i feel bad about how majorly fucked over fincher got while working on this...

it was a good film in its theatrical form, and a great film in its workprint version (bought the quadrilogy set, so ive got both versions... great dvd set!) - with so much crap out there... like avp Very Happy, i dont see what there is to hate in a3, so as i said... i assume its just popular to hate it...

oh and i much prefer finchers workprint ending than the theatrical ending the producers chose.

to summarise, basically teh bit i preferred, as minor as it may be to most, was that the queen didnt burst out of her before she died.

the reason i prefer the ending without the queen popping out, is because you dont know how close the queen was to hatching... ripley struggles at the end wanting to believe that they could save her, but chooses to sacrifice herself so that they didnt get the queen... in the theatrical version, you could clearly see she was going to die anyway... i find finchers original to be much more powerful.

Explain what you mean by visuals because I am confused after reading that bit about cinematography, desaturated colour and mood which you did like.

I personally liked the look (couldn't think of any technical term Razz) of A3 because of the grungy (there, a technical term Very Happy) feel to everything. Not everything in sci-fi (or the future) has to be all shiny chrome and flashing lights. And it fit very well with the fact that it was a prison/mining facility which was no longer being used. Hence the rusty, clangy doors instead of the whooshing ones usually seen in sci-fi.

The lighting did make it difficult to see what was going on in the action scenes like where Ripley mistakenly sees a pipe for the aliens head. But that's what's cool about atmospheric (I'm on a roll here with these techy terms Very Happy) movies that not everything is filmed under fluoroscent tube-light.

The colours in Resurrection, on the other hand, sucked really bad. Everything was brown. Sad

rather than being very light, bright and colourful, fincher toned down the palette to create a very barren and depressing atmosphere... awesome use of contrast and positioning... the use of lighting created a very surrealistic style, almost like what you were seeing was a nightmare, rather than just a camera set up to film some actors playing their roles... camera angles were amazing as well, but then fincher always was a master of the camera... yeah, surrealistic is the best way to discribe it, it feels very raw and dreamlike, sometimes disorientating, always depressing... it sucks you in with the atmosphere almost leeching off of the screen so that you feel it, not just see it.

"Grilled" 2005 with Ray Romano (Everybody Loves Raymond) and Kevin James (King of Queens)
Pretty unknown film i think, it was only released on DVD, never in the Cinema. I am a big Kevin James fan so I give it 7.5/10

Must have misunderstood you. It looked as if you found the visuals not upto par but you made that ample clear in subsequent posts.
